Lot 203

A CARDBOARD AND BELL METAL ASSIGNAT OF 5 LIVRES, Paris, 1791, 19.045g, 38mm. Hennin 339. Extremely rare, only 5 specimens recorded. Attractively toned. By far the finest known. Superb extremely fine Although Louis XVI was beloved at first, his indecisiveness and conservatism led some elements of the people of France to eventually view him as a symbol of perceived tyranny of the `Ancient Régime`. Today historians have a more nuanced view of Louis XVI, the only king of France to be executed, who is seen as an honest man with good intentions, but who was probably unfit for the task of reforming the monarchy, and who was used as a scapegoat by the revolutionaries.
