Charming Coconut Flask Souvenir ‘Bugbear’ of the 19th Regiment of Foot (the 1st York North Riding Regiment) c. 1796-1820, body engraved with Regimental title, an extensive building with a figure raising the Union flag, a stylised native figure in uniform with bell top shako and legend “Look Sijalr (sharp?) You Damd Black Raskel, Here Is The Sergt”, another native mess servant holding bottle and glass with legend “Here Massa”, together with various palm trees, English roses, Irish shamrocks, laurel etc. all in naive manner, base with extensive geometric designs, pewter and brass mounts, original stopper. Height 21cms. Good condition. Note: the 19th Regiment was sent to India in 1796, and subsequently spent most of the next 13 years in Ceylon, including engagement in the Candyan War 1817-19. The Regiment returned home via the West Indies in 1820.
