Whitechapel Bell Foundry Ltd, set of fifteen size (15C) musical handbells, comprising twelve diatonic plus a (10) A sharp, (5) F sharp and a (3) A and three additional handbells (14) D sharp, (11) G sharp and a (7) D sharp in the original green bags, circa 1981. This lot includes associated newsletters.Note: This set belonged to William Gough, son of Professor Jethro Gough, born in 1939 Cardiff. He read physics at Oxford and returned to Cardiff, having gained his doctorate, to take up a position of lecturing and researching at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Cardiff. He remained there until retired. He built both a VHS recorder and a home computer before these were available on the open market. These bells were ordered in 1978 and delivered in 1980 'owing to worldwide demand' invoices enclosed.

A Treatise... on the facts of the case, and of the proceedings in connection with the charge, trial, conviction, and present imprisonment of Florence Elizabeth Maybrick, 1st edition, London: Bailliere, Tindall and Cox, 1891, list of subscribers at front, portrait frontispiece, facsimile letters, press cuttings pasted in front and rear, occasional light spotting, original cloth, head of spine repaired, edges slightly rubbed, 8vo, with a studio photograph by Brown, Danes & Bell, Liverpool of the 12 man jury, with a few signatures and annotations to the verso (small loss of printed area from where previously mounted), 8vo QTY: (1)NOTE:Account of the famous trial and conviction of Florence Maybrick in 1889. Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1862 Florence Chandler, aged 19 travelled to England and met Liverpool cotton merchant James Maybrick and the couple married in 1881. James Maybrick fell ill and died on 11 May 1889 and his wife was accused of poisoning him with arsenic.She was convicted and sentenced to death but the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. She spent more than 14 years in prison, mostly hard labour before being released in 1904, whereupon she returned to the US after her citizenship was restored, and died in penury in 1941.There was some later supposition that James Maybrick, or his brother Michael were Jack the Ripper suspects. The case attracted huge public interest at the time on both sides of the Atlantic.

A VICTORIAN INLAID BURR WALNUT FOLDOVER CARD TABLE, CIRCA 1870 the rectangular quarter-veneered swivelling top with rounded ends, opening to reveal a rouge baize playing surface, supported on four fluted legs issuing from a base with bell-flower carved downswept legs, moving on ceramic castors. 74cm high, 95cm wide, 46.5cm deep (closed)The top is in poor condition with an attempted repair to an area of loss in one corner. The top opens and closes well. The table moves well on the castors. Losses to the banding on the frieze. Structurally sound and no sign of worm.
