An archive of photographs relating the art collection of Margaret Gardiner. Margaret Gardiner's superb art collection was donated by Gardiner in 1979 to the Island of Orkney, and became the basis for the Pier Gallery Collection on Stromness. The photographs in this archive are prints made from negatives held by the Courtauld Institute of Art. Many have been annotated for publication and it is likely that these photographs were the images used in the 1978 catalogue "The Pier Gallery, Stromness, Orkney" by Lucy Havelock-Allan and published by The Pier Arts Centre Trust.Containing approximately 80+ large format black and white photographs of individual works held in the collection, works by Roger Hilton, Barabara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson,Terry Frost, Margaret Mellis, Alfred wallis etc. Also some colour photographs of Ben Nicholson's 'Fireworks' and 13 colour tranparencies of works by Wallis, Nicholson and Hepworth etc. Six black and white photographs of the Pier Arts Centre including three copies of an Edwardian image of ladies and a gentleman in a rowing boat in front of the building in 1907, also a small number of modern colour images of the site.Together with approximately 40 black & white photograph showing interior and exterior shots of a Pier Gallery Collection exhibition held at the Tate gallery in London. Set of six antique silver teaspoons of singe struck King's pattern, monogrammed AMB (letter with the spoons suggests that AMB are the initials of the teacher Alexander Melville Bell 1819-1905 who was the father of the inventor Alexander Graham Bell 1847-1922), makers marks only 'CB', perhaps provincial, 130g. A fine Georgian bracket clock by Thomas Cartwright, London, in ebonised case signed in the dial Tho.s Cartwright Londini, the case with inverted bell top, brass carrying handle above an arched dial with subsidiary strike silent dial, the silvered chapter ring with hour Roman numerals within Arabic minutes, enclosing a small pendulum aperture bordered by scrolled spandrels, the back plate finely engraved with foliate scrolls, birds of paradise and human caricatures, the movement with twin fusee and repeat mechanism, width of dial 15cm, overall height including handle 43cm, case width 23.5cm.
An early 19th century mahogany and ebony strung bracket clock of lancet form with twin fusee movement striking on a bell, the movement with repeat mechanism appears not to be functioning, back plate with border engraved decoration, Gothic style side view windows and raised on gilt brass ball feet, height 48cm.

A 19thC oak longcase clock by J Johnson of Chislehurst, the circular enamel dial painted with an exotic bird, Roman and Arabic numerals, date appature, chain driven thirty hour movement with bell strike, the case hood with broken arch pediment, raised on brass cap fluted columns, the trunk with fluted quarter plasters, door and base with cross banding, raised on bracket feet, 220cm high.
