A XIX Century French Alabaster and Gilt Metal Mantel Clock by Japy Freres, the drum shape base enclosing a white enamel dial with Roman numerals and signed W.S Buston London, of eight day movement striking on a bell, flanked by a scribe in XVIII century costume and with a shield, sword, hop and foliate cresting, raised on a moulded plinth with three domascene panels, acanthus and mask mounts, on toupie and strapwork feet, on an ebonised and velvet lines stand under a glass dome, the clock 30 cms high, 35 cms wide.

ERIC DOBSON (1923-1992) Self-portrait, smoking a pipe, inscribed verso 'for Jane', signed with initials and dated 1955, oils on canvas, 13 1/2" x 11 1/2" together with a Valentines Day sketch by the same hand inscribed 'Tomorrow is St Valentines Day' verso, 6" x 4 1/2" unframed and a sketch depicting objects within his bedroom, 8" x 4" (see illustration). Note: Dobson was an artist and influential teacher at Newcastle University from 1953 to 1989. A representational and abstract painter, he bridged the years when the Euston Road School with its Cezannesque methods evolved into a mode of reductive abstraction, a transition typified by Victor Pasmore's career at the time. He also taught at Newcastle University together with Quentin Bell and Victor Pasmore.

An early nineteenth century mahogany veneered longcase clock, the eight-day movement striking on a bell, the arched painted twelve inch dial with rotating moon phases and globes, Roman and Arabic numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial and calendar, sprays of flowers to the corners, the case inlaid stringing the hood with brass filigree mounts to the horns of the swan neck pediment, brass eagle ball finial cast gilt brass Corinthian capitals to the reeded pillar, a serpentine edge back, the trunk with a well figured door, reeded angled corners, the base with a replaced plinth. 7ft 9in (236cm) high overall.
