A Victorian brass Porthmeor Beach hand bell, with turned wood handle, height 28cm.Provenance: Porthmeor Beach Bell belonging to John Care, better known locally as Jack Mallett. Jack and his wife Mary Ann ran Porthmeor beach from the 1930s for a number of years. The bell was used to call the bathers up to the bathing huts at the end of the day. The bell has been in the family ever since. Jack also ran Porthgwidden Beach and made all the tents himself he also played the fiddle for the dancing round the steeple at the John Knill ceremony.

A very large and impressive late Victorian silver cup in early 18th century style, the bell shaped bowl embossed with leaves, the twin handles acanthus capped, by the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co (William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman), London 1896, 25cm, 76oz. On ebonized socle with a silver tablet inscribed 'Major F. S. Garratt From His Brother Officers Of The Carabiniers (6th Dragoon Guards) May 8th 1897'. (See illustration) Condition report: There are a few dents, minor deflection to foot. Not worn thin. Inscription on plinth only.

The artist has said he was just articulating an iconography of the world around me,an exploration of a seemingly absurd world at the time in the North, the Middle East Iran etc.”. The model for the work is his friend and fellow artist Colin McGookin who is painted twice at either side of a fencing pole inscribed'Brits Out’ wearing the ‘Red hand of Ulster’ on one side and ‘The Easter Lily ‘ on the other. Similar works to this have been shown internationally including in the exhibition “On the Balcony of a Nation” which toured to several cities in The United States in 1990 and more recently in “Art of The Troubles Exhibition” in The Ulster Museum .We thank the artist for his help cataloguing this lot.

Mary Alexandra Bell (1864-1951) - Children fishing in a sunlit landscape, signed, also inscribed on the reverse of the frame 'M.A.Bell, St. Ives Cornwall, Exhibited at Royal Academy '1896, £21', possibly the picture titled 'A Summers Day', oil on canvas, 20" x 24" *Sold together with copies of information from the Royal Academy of Arts and the Victoria and Albert Museum **The artist married the painter Charles H.Eastlake, circa 1897. Originally from Canada, she was born in Douglas, Ontario and studied in Montreal with Robert Harris as well as in New York at the Art Students League with William Chase. She was commissioned to paint a number of works for American patrons in New York. She travelled to England in 1890 and Paris in 1891, settling in St. Ives where she met and married the painter Charles Herbert Eastlake (fl. 1889-1927) where they became designers and jewellery makers, as well as continuing to paint and exhibit. She travelled extensively in Europe and Asia, returning to Canada in 1939, she was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy resigning after her marriage, she was also a member of the pastel society of London, the Women's International Art Club, and the Boston Water-Colour Society. She exhibited prolifically in both Canada, America and at the Royal Academy in London.
