'DOROTHEA' & 'CLORINDA', CIRCA 1847-8 polychrome parianware, 'Clorinda' stamped MINTON/ 203, and incised JOHN BELL/ FEBRUARY/ 1848, 33.5cm high; 'Dorothea' with moulded decorator marks, stamped MINTON, with moulded registration lozenge for 1847, 34cm highProvenance: The Peter Rose and Albert Gallichan CollectionFootnote: Literature: Coleman, B., The Best of British Arts & Crafts, Atglen, 2004, pp. 74, 77-79 Note: John Bell was an esteemed British sculptor, having begun his training at the Royal Academy Schools in 1839. In the years that followed he gained widespread critical acclaim, notably from Prince Albert who became a patron of his work, and had produced some of his best-known sculptures including Psyche and the Dove, and The Eagle-Shooter, the latter becoming the first sculpture to be produced in cast-iron, and was exhibited at The Great Exhibition in 1851. During the 1840s Bell partnered with Henry Cole to produce a number of designs for his company Felix Summerly. A prolific designer, he frequently worked with a variety of materials, including metalwork and ceramics. It was around this time that Bell collaborated with several companies like Minton to recreate his sculptures in Parian ware. These sculptures were immensely popular in the late 19th century, conjuring up notions of the exclusive Grand Tour and representing a superior knowledge of Rome and Classical Antiquities. Minton are thought to have produced around 500 figures between 1845 and 1910, with Bell’s Dorothea proving a particularly popular example. Some of Bell’s larger public commissions include The Guards Crimean War Memorial, near Regent Street and Pall Mall in London, as well as the marble group representing America on the Albert Memorial.

Educated at Bell Baxter High School, Cupar, Fife 1970-74. In 1978 he graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and after a short period working as an illustrator with Dundee Museums and Art Galleries he became a freelance artist specialising in wildlife. Since then he has had 8 books published featuring his own work, Keith Brockie’s Wildlife Sketchbook, 1981; One Man’s Island, 1984; The Silvery Tay, 1988; Mountain Reflections, 1994; Cuaderno de Campo de la Naturaleza Espaniola, 1995 and Drawn from Nature, 1995; Return to One Man’s Island, 2012; Glen of the Lapwing, 2019. In addition he has part or wholly illustrated many more books including ‘Rural Portraits’, 2003, featuring the native farm animals of Scotland and the characters involved with them. A film ‘One Man’s Island’ featuring his work on the Isle of May was shown on the BBC 2 World About Us series in 1984. In the course of his work he has travelled widely in countries as disparate as Scandinavia, North Yemen, Tanzania, India and North America. Also he has participated in expeditions to Greenland in1982, 88, 91 and Svalbard 1993 as assistant leader with the British Schools Exploring Society teaching about the wildlife and field sketching. His original art is highly regarded, a recent review in The Scotsman of the Curious Eye exhibition at The Royal Scottish Academy by Duncan Macmillan, one of Scotland’s foremost art critics recognised the depth of observation and feeling which is transmitted by Keiths’ work: “His study of a hare watched through a telescope is as beautiful as the hare itself, but it is not just a borrowed beauty, something appropriated, that we admire in his work….(it) is a record of something seen, certainly, but also of otherness understood and wondered at, of empathy, of seeing informed by feeling…To record and transmit real feeling can’t be borrowed. It has to be your own, and if it is counterfeit we soon spot that deception”. Keith Brockie's paintings rarely appear at auction.Condition report: Condition is good overall, with no visible signs of restoration, damage, or known issues.

A porcelain glockenspiel was made in 1736 for the Japanese Palace by J.J. Kaendler and his assistants, though the tone quality left something to be desired. The new glockenspiel provided an opportunity to demonstrate the technical and design mastery required to produce a melodic instrument. The first playable example was installed in the tower of the Frauenkirche in Meissen in 1929; others followed in 1930 in the press pavillion of the Dresden hygiene exhibition (subsequently in the Zwinger palace), and in 1934 in Bremen (Lechelt 2011, pp. 110-111).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
