Light wear to high points, otherwise nearly extremely fine. Princess Clementina Sobieski (1703-1735) was betrothed to Prince James Stuart. George I was averse to the marriage and to please him the Princess was arrested and imprisoned in Innsbrück Castle. Eventually she escaped to Bologna and was married to James, at that time in Spain, by proxy.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, George II, The Kings and Queens of England, 1731-32, the Complete Set of Copper Medals (34), from William the Conqueror to the Dedication Medal of George II and Queen Caroline, and the (slightly reduced size) Cromwell, this 38mm, the others 41mm, contained in a bespoke leather presentation case (MI I, p.1; Eisler I, pp 252-266, 1-33, 35). The medals extremely fine or virtually so, a few with minor spotting. (34) Sold together with a pocket-size book:- Knott T, A Concise Epitome of the History of England on 36 Plates, being a representation of Dassier’s Medals of the Sovereigns of England, with the addition of their present Majesties, nd, c.1800, 6cm x 12cm, 36 copper engraved plates with accompanying text, original morocco leather boards, gilt, spine rebound to match, raised bands, gilt rules, title in gilt. Extremities worn, contents a little brown throughout, but texts and plates complete, an attractive and charming text, “designed for the amusement and information of youth.”

Lightly toned, extremely fine. The Club, whose members were the “responsible and opulant neighbouring gentlemen” in Manchester, was founded to commemorate the defeat of the Dissenters in Parliament. The attribution to Lewis Pingo (BHM) is seriously doubted by Eimer.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, George III, Princess Charlotte, Betrothal to William of Orange, Silver Medal and Copper Medal, 1814, by T Webb, bust of the Princess right, rev figure of Hope standing holding olive branch, cornucopiae and rudder, 54mm (BHM 778). Both extremely fine. (2) The intended marriage of Charlotte and Prince William never took place as Charlotte broke off the engagement six months after it was announced. Perhaps due to the wrath of her father, she stayed out of the public’s gaze at Cranbourne Lodge Windsor until 1816.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, George III, The Bethnal Green Volunteers, Disbanded, Silver Medal, 1814, by P Wyon, inscription within closed wreath, rev Britannia standing on a serpent holding olive branch aloft, 50mm (BHM 833, R3), in original (but damaged) case of issue. Extremely fine, deeply toned and extremely rare. After the Treaty of Paris in 1814 all volunteer corps except the Bank Corps were ordered to disband. The general order took place on 24 June 1814. Lt-Colonel Carrick presented each member of the Bethnal Green Volunteer corps with an example of the present medal.
