Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857-1941)'HERALDIC'a wallpaper design, signed, inscribed and dated ‘CFA Voysey Archt 23 York Place W Sept 20 1904 / Copyright for paper belongs to Essex and Co.’watercolour and pencil69 x 56cmFor an identical wallpaper design in a different colourway, see the V&A Museum No. E.264-1913. The wallpaper design was apparently given to Edmund Hunter (1866-1937), by CFA Voysey. Hunter founded the St Edmundsbury Silk Weaving Works, in Haslemere in the late 1890's and moved to Letchworth Garden City in 1908. The firm's textiles were widely viewed nationally and internationally, and in 1904, at the St Louis International Exhibition, the company won a silver medal for decorative textiles. Commissions came from the royal chapels, Westminster Abbey and St Paul's, as well as the lavish productions of Herbert Beerbohm Tree.It is possible that Hunter and Voysey met whilst living in Bedford Park or at Letchworth. Voysey worked with Essex and Co. from 1893 and was known to have executed several hundred designs. In the 'Decorators and Painters Magazine' 1902-3, Vol. 1, there is reference to Voysey's 'Heraldic' design. 'Perhaps the most distinguishing new characteristics of Messrs Essex & Co.'s goods this year is the number of designs in which the motive is connected with the forthcoming coronation. The Heraldic design is a sample of the important development - It is produced in several colourings, one of them quite startling in its effects. The ground is in vermillion, the background of the shield is black, the ground of the paper is in green, and the stripes are in vivid blue'.
