Interesting First World War and later medal group, comprising 1914 - 1915 Star, named to 2. Lieut. L. Moss. A.S.C., War and Victory, named to 2. Lieut. L. Moss., Italy Star, Defence and War medals (mounted on bar), together with miniatures. Lionel Moss began his military career in 1915, when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the A.S.C. Shortly afterwards beginning Pilot training and then commencing his first operational tour with No. 10 Squadron in France in November 1915. Whilst flying a reconnaissance sortie, Moss and his observer 2nd Lieut. Henderson were brought down by anti-aircraft fire, making a forced landing in their B.E.2. at Nieppe. Moss was wounded and as a result, did not fly again until June 1916. Moss then returned to the army from the Royal Flying Corp, ending the War as a Captain in the A.S.C. He went on subsequently to serve during the Second World War, finally ending up as an Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in 1947. He died in Frinton-on-Sea in October 1980, aged ninety years. As well as his medals are his two flying log books, which cover his time with the R.F.C., including his shooting down, two cloth R.F.C. wings, various period and later photographs of him and his British Empire Aviators Certificate. A very interesting Great War Royal Flying Corp group
