AN INDIA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1849-1895 TO ABLE SEAMAN GEORGE SMITH, H.M.S. CONTEST with single clasp Pegu (GEO. SMITH 94 A.B. CONTEST), engraved, unmounted. Note (1): H.M.S. Contest was a 12-gun brig launched in 1846. The ship and her company were involved in operations around the waters of Southern Burma from the 5th of April until the 20th of December, and in the annexation of Pegu (now known as Bago, Myanmar), for which they were due prize money for capture of booty Note (2): The Second Burma War mainly came about due to the unwillingness of the King of Ava to abide by the Treaty of Yendaboo which had been set up on the of 24th February 1826 after the first Burma War. This treaty allowed the British and the Honourable East India Company trading facilities in the port of Rangoon. The loss of this territory was a hard blow to the Burmese, and it remained a critical issue in British-Burmese relations. In 1852 violations of the treaty included the molestation of shipping, attacks on British warships, and the alleged ill treatment of British subjects. Attempts to obtain satisfaction failed and war was declared on 2nd April 1852. A squadron under Commodore G. Lambert and an expeditionary force under Major General Henry Godwin were dispatched on 28th March 1852. Fighting was concentrated in the Irrawaddy delta around Rangoon. Martaban was captured on 5th April, Rangoon on 14th April, Bassein on 19th May, Pegu on 4th April; and Prome on 10th October, and on 20th December the Pegu province was annexed. The situation was further complicated by unrest in the country, led by Myat-Toon, who had his stronghold near Donubyu. By the start of 1853, most of the resistance had ceased and the whole of the Burmese coast from Chittagong down to Rangoon and Pegu passed into the British hands. The war officially ended on 30th June 1853.

ONE OF THE OLDEST VETERANS IN CHARD.' Note: The 2nd Battalion, 3rd (East Kent, The Buffs) Regiment of Foot had previously served in the Ionian islands and the West Indies. Towards the end of 1878, the HQ and 5 companies of the Buffs, which had been scattered over a wide area of Natal, were ordered to concentrate at Thring's Post, near the mouth of the Tugela river. Early in November three more companies arrived from Mauritius, at which time they were ordered to construct an earthwork on the right bank of the river, which subsequently became known as Fort Pearson. The Regiment served at the Battle of Inyezane. Two companies of the 3rd were subsequently present at the Battle of Gingindlovu, having been detached from Pearson's column for convoy duties, and thereby escaping being besieged at Eshowe, like their regimental comrades. The Regiment formed part of Crealock's 1st Division in the second invasion of Zululand.

A Second World War Distinguished Service medal group of seven medals awarded to Petty Officer William Omer Laurie, D/JX 145716, to include Distinguished Service medal, Burma, Africa, Atlantic 1939-1945 Stars, 1939-1945 War medal and Long Service and Good Conduct medal, North Africa 1942-43 bar, and submariner's dolphin brooch, together with photographs of Petty Officer Laurie, service records, telegrams of congratulations, certificates and discharge papers. By family repute Petty Officer Laurie was awarded the medal for Courageous Deeds aboard the submarine HMS Taku, off Vietnam in the South China Seas during the latter part of the Second World War. The Submarine was going through an enemy minefield when one of the mines' chains caught in the casing of the submarine. Three volunteers including Chief Petty Officer Laurie managed to successfully cut the mine loose.
