Lot 151

Paperwork & Ephemera of Royal Navy Interest, served HMS Merlin China Station, grouping relates to the service of Chief Engine Room Artificer Ernest Robert Johnson Royal Navy. The grouping consists of his original certificate of service, marriage certificate, death certificate, identity disc and a number of photographs including a studio photograph of him in uniform taken in Hong Kong, probably taken during his time with the China Station. He served on various ships from 1900 until 1922. He was awarded a 1914-15 star trio and Long Service Good Conduct medal.

Great War Military Medal (MM) 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers, medal was awarded to “7239 PTE T.PARKER 1/R. IR:FUS:”. Medal has some contact marks. Private Thomas Parker served overseas from 11th September 1914 with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was awarded a Silver Wound Badge. His Military Medal was gazetted on 11th November 1916, whilst serving with the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers.

1914-15 Star Trio of Captain William Edward Phillips Royal Air Force, 1914-15 star is named on the reverse “M2-048665 M.S. SJT W.E. PHILLIPS. A.S.C”, British War and Victory medals named around the rim “CAPT W.E. PHILLIPS R.A.F.” Victory medal is mounted with a MID oak leaf. William Edward Phillips served with the Army Service Corps in France from 21st February 1915. Gained a commission in 1916 and was placed on the general list before being transferred to the Royal Air Force where he served as an equipment officer.

1914-15 Star Trio Officer 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment late Army Service Corps, 1914-15 star is named on the reverse “RTS-4781 PTE C.H. SHEPPARD A.S.C”, British War and Victory medals are named around the rim “2.LIEUT C.H. SHEPPARD.”. Victory medal is fitted with a MID oak leaf.

Lot 26

British Officers Medal Group 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers Killed in Action 5th April 1918, the group consists of British War & Allied Victory medals named to “2.LIEUT F MASTERTON” and bronze memorial plaque named to “FRANK MASTERTON”. Medals are complete with ribbons and housed in card issue box. Accompanying the medals is some original period paperwork including War Graves Commission card with photograph of his grave, Royal Fusiliers Christmas cards, memorial card. The most poignant item in the group is a letter sent by his commanding officer to 2nd Lieutenant Mastertons wife informing her that her husband had been killed, the letter is dated 8th April 1918. ** Frank Masterton enlisted as a private in the Royal Fusiliers in 1898, he served in various depots with different battalions. He rose to the rank of Warrant Officer II and Company Sergeant Major before gaining a regular commission in January 1918. He served on the Western Front from the 15th March 1917. He was killed in action during the battle of Ancre. He is buried at the Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert.

Great War Military Medal (MM) 12th Manchester Regiment, medal was awarded to “245676 SJT: W EVANS 12/MANCH:R”. Medal has some contact marks but generally good condition. Walter Evans enlisted in the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry and served overseas from 22nd May 1915. His Military Medal was gazetted on 2nd April 1918, whilst serving with 12th Battalion Manchester Regiment.

Great War Household Battalion medal group of three, consisting of British War medal and Allied Victory medals awarded to “1952 TPR W MC KERROW HOUSEHOLD BN”. Accompanying them is a silver Household Brigade medal which is unnamed. Medals remain in good overall condition. (3 items)

Medals Relating To The Dunn Family, consisting of British War & Victory medals awarded to “69162 PNR J B DUNN RE”, framed memorial scroll with later applied named at the bottom Pte Henry Dunn Royal Scots and a Elizabeth II General Service Medal with clasp Near East renanmed “5014013 SGT K D DUNN RAF REGT”. (3 items) Private Henry Dunn served with 2nd Battalion Royal Scots and was killed on 2nd September 1918. See next lot for another medal group to the Dunn Family.

Lot 31

Great War Royal Sussex Regiment Prisoner of War British War Medal and Paperwork, medal was awarded to “G-12185 A. SJT H J FILMER R. SUSS R”. Accompanied by his polished regimental cap badge and a selection of paperwork including a citation presented to him by the Sussex County Prisoners of War fund which states he was captured on 22nd March 1918 and remained a prisoner in Germany until 28th December 1918. Postcard photograph of Filmer wearing combat helmet and wearing a cold weather jerkin. Other wartime and later paperwork also included. Medal has some polishing and contact marks. Harry J Filmer served with the 9th Battalion, A Company, Royal Sussex Regiment when he was taken prisoner of war in March 1918. The regimental war diaries state that on the 22nd March 1918 1.30 “About this time A and C companies had the Germans all round them and nobody on their flanks. D company 1000 yards further behind had been attacked from the south opposite. A company saw the relics of C company surrendering after having fired every round. Not a single man of either these companies had come back so far. A company having some dead ground behind them and a long belt of wire on their left were able to withdraw although the Germans had machine guns within 50 yards of them. The Germans followed them the other side of the wire all the way back to Hesbecourt inflicting about 30% casualties including Capt Rewell (Wounded). This withdrawal must have taken place about 1.30”.

Very Rare Post 1902 Royal Navy Admirals Full Dress Tunic being a double breasted coatee with white stand up collar decorated with heavy bullion gilt oak leaves. Cuffs have Royal Navy rank lace and bullion decoration. Royal Navy dress shoulder boards with bullion and metal crown, crossed sword and baton and three rank stars. Full dress intertwined gilt and blue fleck aiguillettes with gilt metal end pieces. Loops to the breast for a long medal ribbon bar and two machined holes for a breast order.Tunic is accompanied by a fine example of an Admirals sword belt. Belt is of black leather with cloth and heavy bullion decoration. Kings crown buckle being the Admirals pattern, buckle retains much of the original gilt finish. Full dress naval beaver skin bicorn hat with fine quality gilt braid decoration to the edges and gilt bullion wire decoration to the side. Interior of the cap has the original sweatband and lining with Gieves tailors details. The set shows just very light service wear. A truly outstanding quality item of British Naval uniform.

Great War Royal Fusiliers Officers Cuff Rank Tunic complete with bronze officers collar badges. Brass regimental buttons to the front and pockets (two pocket buttons missing). Rank pips to the cuffs for Captain. To the breast are medal ribbons for Queens and Kings South Africa medals for Boer War service. Interior of the tunic has tailors label with inked name and date 1914, the name is not easy to make out. Some light service wear and staining to the tunic but generally a good example.

Imperial German Iron Cross 2nd Class complete with its ribbon, makers mark stamping to the ring. Accompanied by a German 1914-18 honour cross with swords, 1914-16 French Croix du Guerre, French Combat Cross and French Verdun medal. All remain in good overall condition. (5 items)

Post 1902 Life Guards Dress Tunic of scarlet cloth with dark navy blue cuffs, shoulder boards and collar. Gilt braid decoration to the collar, cuffs and shoulders. Brass kings crown buttons to the tunic. Single medal ribbon loop to the breast. Interior has blanket lining with clear issue stampings. Remains of the original paper label which is dated 1932. Some service wear. Reverse of the tunic has some stitching missing to pleat, this could be easily repaired. Some light moth tracking to the tunic and dusty.

WW2 British Royal Sussex Regiment Officers Tunics consisting of private purchase 1937 pattern Battle Dress complete with embroidered regimental shoulder titles to the arm and red backed Majors rank crown to the shoulders. Breast has medal ribbons for 1939-45 star, Burma star, Defence medal, 1939-45 war medal and Territorial Decoration. Private purchase interior lining to the Battle Dress. Accompanying the BD is his officers service dress tunic with bronze regimental collar badges and brass regimental buttons. Service dress has the same medal ribbons as the battle dress. Some minor moth nips to the BD but the service dress remains in very good overall condition. (2 items).

WW2 RAF Air Gunners Battle Dress Blouse, complete with the original 1943 dated size label to the inside. Tunic has medal ribbons underneath Air Gunner brevet wing. Some moth damage to the tunic.

Lot 44

WW2 Royal Air Force Medals, Log Book and Paperwork Grouping to Bomb Aimer R H Weldrake 358 Squadron RCAF, Special Duties Squadron Serving in the Far East, the medal group consists of 1939-45 star, Burma star and 1939-45 War medal. Medals are mounted onto a card board with a Bomb Aimers brevet wing underneath. With the medals are his original RCAF flying log book which has his name inked to the front cover. Inside cover has his certificate of qualification information. The log book starts with him serving with 7 A.O.S in February 1944, the log has an entry on 24th August 1944 stating he was “tested in Decompression Chamber at RAF Poona, up to 35,000 feet. Witnessed & experienced effects of Oxygen lack at 25,000 feet. No ill effects from lowered atmospheric preassure”, signed by the Medical Officer. He joined 358 Squadron December 1944. The log continues with operations but these simply state “Operations As Briefed”. Log goes up to May 1945. Accompanied by a selection of period paperwork and ephemera. Also accompanied by a large archive of photocopied paperwork including operations record books giving details of the operations carried out. 358 Squadron was a Bomber and Special Duties squadron serving in the Far East under South East Asia command.  Formed on 8th November 1944, they only performed one bombing mission before being changed to a Special Duties squadron involved in dropping agents and supplies behind the Japanese lines and dropping supplies to Japanese pow camps. Squadron was disbanded 21st November 1945.

WW2 Campaign Medal Group and Hallmarked Silver Presentation Pocket Watch, the medals consist of 1939-45 star, France and Germany star, Defence medal and 1939-45 War medal. Medals are complete with original ribbons and box of issue. Accompanying the medals is a hallmarked silver (1937) swiss made pocket watch by J W Benson London, engraved on the reverse “PRESENTED TO MR HOARE FOR BEST PLOUGHING WITH FORDSON TRACTOR GRAVESEND & ROCHESTER AGRICULTRAL ASSOCIATION 22ND OCTOBER 1938”. Items remain in good overall condition with the watch in working order.

WW2 Royal Navy HMS Sheffield Medal Group, consisting of 1939-45 star, Atlantic star with loose France & Germany clasp, Italy star and 1939-45 War medal. Housed in forwarding box with ring. Accompanying the medals is his original certificate of service giving his name of Henry John Thomas Sellwood from West Malling, Kent. Also with a certificate of wound dated 11th May 1945, Gunnery history sheet, ship photograph of the crew of HMS Sheffield and other items of paperwork etc.

Luftwaffe Signals Officers Mess Tunic with silver twist wire border to the collar. Luftwaffe officers shoulder boards with copper brown underlay. Early type droop tail officers bullion wire breast eagle. Officers dress pattern aiguillettes and five piece medal ribbon bar. Interior has Munich tailors label to the collar area. Good condition lining to the interior showing just light service wear. One small moth nip to one cuff.
