I observed the artists' works and I continue to see them out of the corner of my eye, I don't want to know more about them, I don't want to learn too much, their burden will weigh me down. Obra gráfica / graphic work Vol. 4: 1987-1994", Ed. Gustau Gili, Barcelona.Size: 50 x 65 cm.Co-founder of "Dau al Set" in 1948, Tàpies began to exhibit at the Salones de Octubre in Barcelona, as well as at the Salón de los Once held in Madrid in 1949. After his first solo exhibition at the Galerías Layetanas, he travels to Paris in 1950, with a grant from the Institut Français. From then on, he exhibited his work, both in group and solo shows, all over the world, in leading galleries and museums such as the Guggenheim in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Since the 1970s, anthologies have been devoted to him in Tokyo, New York, Rome, Amsterdam, Madrid, Venice, Milan, Vienna and Brussels. Self-taught, Tàpies created his own style within the avant-garde art of the 20th century, combining tradition and innovation in an abstract style full of symbolism, giving great importance to the material substratum of the work. It is worth noting the marked spiritual sense given by the artist to his work, where the material support transcends its state to signify a profound analysis of the human condition. Tàpies' work has been highly valued internationally, being exhibited in the most prestigious museums in the world. Throughout his career he has received numerous prizes and distinctions, including the Praemium Imperiale of Japan, the National Prize for Culture, the Grand Prix for Painting in France, the Wolf Foundation for the Arts (1981), the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1983), the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts (1990), the Picasso Medal of Unesco (1993) and the Velázquez Prize for the Plastic Arts (2003). MANUEL HERNÁNDEZ MOMPÓ (Valencia, 1927 - Madrid, 1992)"Peasant women looking out of the window", 1976.Mixed media on cardboard.Signed and dated in the lower left corner.Work reproduced in the catalogue raisonné of the artist "Manuel Hernández. Paintings, sculptures and drawings, 1969-1986", vol. II, ref. 1976/54, p. 286.Provenance: Benlliure Gallery, Valencia.Measurements: 54 x 32 cm; 81 x 72 cm (frame).Work treated from an abstract language of simple forms tending towards geometry, in which the artist has managed to introduce the spectator into the aesthetic experience of experimentation, typical of the creation of a concrete and subjective aesthetic language. The son of a painting teacher, Hernández Mompó alternated his primary and secondary school studies with classes at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos in Valencia, which he entered in 1943. In 1948 he obtained a grant to paint in Granada, at the Residence for Painters, and three years later a new grant enabled him to travel to Paris. In the French capital he came into contact with the circles of informalist painters, whose influence would mark his later work, leaving behind the landscapes and portraits that had dominated his oeuvre until then. Between 1954 and 1955 he spent a long period in Rome, on a grant from the Department of Culture of the Ministry of National Education to study at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in the Italian capital. In 1954 he took part in the Viareggio International Exhibition, where he was awarded the Italian Navigation Prize. He left Italy and settled in Amsterdam, where he again frequented the informalist cenacles. In 1957 he returned to Spain and settled in Aravaca (Madrid). The following year he was awarded a grant from the Juan March Foundation in Madrid, and won the Grand National Painting Prize and a first medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. During the sixties and seventies he alternated his residence between Madrid, Ibiza, and in 1973 he spent a year in California. On his return to Spain he settled in Mallorca. Hernández Mompó exhibited in the main capitals of Europe and the United States, and took part in national and international exhibitions. Among his most outstanding awards was the Unesco Prize received at the 34th Venice Biennale in 1968. In 1984 he was awarded the National Prize for Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture. His youthful style was soon influenced in a definitive way by abstract expressionism and informalism, although his works never lost reality as a reference point. In his production, Hernández Mompó captures a figurative and poetic imagery, harmoniously mixed with abstract elements and rich superimposition effects. Hernández Mompó is represented at the IVAM in Valencia, the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, the Museo de Arte Abstracto in Cuenca, the British Museum in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Chase Manhattan Bank Collection in New York and the Winterthur Museum in Switzerland, among many others.

JAUME PLENSA (Barcelona, 1955)."Tear" (Jerusalem), 1998.Collage of photography and plastic glue and plastic cover. Issue 19/30. Print run of 30 and three PA and 2 EHC.Work reproduced in the artist's catalogue raisonné and on his website.Publisher: Edición T.Barcelone.Printer; Magí Baleta, Barcelona.Signed in the lower right corner and justified in the lower left corner.Size: 40 x 26,5 cm; 21 x 10,5 cm (frame). This work belongs to the suite of 5 works (Tear (Jerusalem), Lips (Multindus II), Sigh (Réunion), Nail (Tokyo) and Eyes (Granada).Plensa studied at La Llotja School and at the Superior de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi, both in Barcelona. He excelled in sculpture, drawing and engraving. His work focuses on the relationship between man and his environment, often questioning the role of art in society and the position of the artist. He currently lives in Paris, and was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Plensa began his career working with wrought iron mixed with polyester. Between 1983 and 1984 he began to mould iron using the casting technique, and developed a sculptural concept based on zoomorphic elements. His work gradually evolved, and he is now considered a precursor of Spanish neo-expressionism. In the nineties he introduced modifications in his work in both material and formal terms, and began to use different materials such as metal scraps, polyester and resins. During these years he produced series of walls, doors and architectural constructions, seeking to give space an absolute protagonist role. Between 1999 and 2003 Plensa became one of the pillars of world scenography, reinterpreting four classical operas by Falla, Debussy, Berlioz and Mozart with "La Fura dels Baus", and alone in a contemporary theatrical production, "La pareti della solitudine", by Ben Jelloun. He has had solo and group exhibitions all over the world, including a retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2000. In June 2008, he unveiled his work "Breathing", a memorial to journalists killed in the line of duty, at the BBC headquarters in London. MANUEL VIOLA (Zaragoza, 1916 - San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 1987)."Harlequin with a Cockerel".Oil on panel.Signed in the lower right corner.Size: 36 x 27 cm; 56 x 48 cm (frame).José Viola Gamón adopted the name by which he is known, Manuel Viola, after the Civil War. A member of the El Paso group, his painting is characterised by an informalist and colourist treatment, in line with the avant-garde developed in Spain from the 1950s onwards. He began studying Philosophy and Arts in Barcelona, but was forced to abandon them because of the war. His first drawings date from these years. After the war he went into exile in France, where he wrote for the surrealist poetry magazine "La main à plume". There he began to exhibit his work in the exhibitions of the so-called Spanish School of Paris. He returned to Spain in 1949, and in 1958 his truly personal style began to emerge, and at the same time he joined the avant-garde pictorial group El Paso, to which Antonio Saura, Rafael Canogar, Luis Feito and Manolo Millares, among others, belonged. He began to express himself through abstract painting with a strong expressionist character and great attention to colour. He definitively left behind the figuration that had prevailed until then in his work. Throughout his life he was awarded numerous prizes, such as the Condado de San Jorge Prize, the Lissones Prize (Milan) and the Gold Medal of the City of Saragossa. He exhibited in the most important galleries in Spain and also abroad, in cities such as Oslo, New York, Venice, São Paulo and Houston. While he was still alive, important retrospective exhibitions of his work were held: in 1965 at the Dirección de Bellas Artes de Madrid, in 1971 at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid, in 1972 at the Lonja de Zaragoza, in 1983 at the Armas Gallery in Miami, and in 1986 in Houston. After his death, anthological exhibitions of his work continued to be held in international galleries and museums. Manuel Viola's work can be seen in the Reina Sofía Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Cologne, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, the Guggenheim in New York and Bilbao and the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, among many others.
