FRANKLIN JOHN: (1786-1847) British Royal Navy officer and Arctic Explorer. Fine, lengthy A.L.S., John Franklin, four pages, Devonshire Street, 8th June n.y. (dated 1829 in pencil in another hand), to J. B. Portland, in Paris. Franklin thanks his correspondent for the kindnesses he has shown to himself and Lady Franklin and sends his sympathy for the condition Portland finds himself in, refers to his movements in the near future, including a visit to the races at Ascot, and continues to thank him ‘for your hearty congratulations on the honour which the Geographical Society of Paris have been pleased to bestow upon my recent labours in the field of discovery-I assure you I feel the deepest sense of gratitude to the members of that most distinguished Society for their very flattering testimony in favour of my humble services.’ Franklin also refers to a letter he has received from the Duke of Orleans accompanied by a ‘most elegant Snuff Box which contains on the lid a very excellent & well finished portrait of himself’ and asks Portland if he can arrange for an acknowledgement of the gift to made in the French papers, before again returning to the subject of the medal presented to him by the Geographical Society and agreeing that it should be delivered to him via the ambassador. A letter of good content. Some small areas of paper loss and with a red wax seal attached. About VG
Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe R.A., R.E., A.R.C.A.(Lond) (1901-1979). "Ring of Fallow Bucks". Signed, extensively inscribed on an exhibition label verso, pencil and watercolour, 44cm by 59.5cm, Provenance: The Wildlife Art Gallery, 97 High Street, Lavenham, Suffolk, Born at Langley, Macclesfield, won a scholarship to Macclesfield School of Art and Manchester School of Art 1915 -1921, and a Royal Exhibition Scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1921, gaining his diploma in painting in 1923. His work was purchased by the British Museum, the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston and for overseas collections. Won the Gold Medal of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in 1975..
