John Copley RBA (1875-1950)Figureslithograph in colours, signed 'John Copley' in pencil l.c.plate 22.5 x 21.5cmJohn Copley studied at the Manchester School of Art and the Royal Academy. In 1948, he won a silver Olympic medal for painting and engraving - this was the final year art competitions were included in the Olympic Games. Copley was married to fellow artist, Ethel Gabain.Condition ReportFramed size: 43.5 x 41cm.Unexamined out of glazed frame, generally appears to be in good condition and well-presented.
This Lot consists of the two items which belonged to John Robert Lund latterly of Ilkley, Yorkshire (1883-1960 ) and one item which belonged to his wife Sarah Ann Lund (nee Shuttleworth) (1883-1962) A Sterling Silver medal awarded for a meritorious act of first aid carried out by John Robert Lund (of Embsay) on June 18th 1905 at Giggleswick (near Settle) whilst in the employ of the Midland Railway Company. The obverse side of the medal has a Maltese Cross surmounted by a Wyvern. The medal which was struck by A. H. Darby, Birmingham and chain are presented in their original display box measures 1.25in diameter together with a 1 in diameter hall marked Silver medal presented to John Robert Lund for service in the St Johns Ambulance Association within the Midland Railway Company dated 1903. And lastly a Bronze St. John's Ambulance Service Pendant with appendages for 1912 and 1913 awarded to Sarah Ann Shuttleworth of Cononley Yorkshire. A letter from their grandson accompanies the lot.

Three Austro Hungarian or Austrian medals orders or decorations: Includes Medal of Honour of the State of Styria, boxed (medal 55mm wide), an unidentfied order with the inscription Vigilando Ascendimus which seems to perhaps be an early version of the Order of the White Falcon, and though we can find no precise record of this order, the motto seems to link to this order 86mm wide, and later Austria cross of merit 50mm wide, boxed. All associated with the Ledlitz / Lendecke aristocratic Austrian family. (3)

Fus.) suspension missing; Army Meritorious service medal, G.V.R, 3rd issue, coinage head (Bandmaster Lan. Fus.) good very fine except where stated (2) Footnote M.S.M A.O 10/1933L.S. & G.C.A.O. 10th January 1903, without gratuity. Edward M. Rogers was born in London and enlisted under alias of Manley Rogers at Aldershot on March 15th 1877, aged 15 years, 11 months. He served over seas in Malta, Gibraltar, Crete and Egypt, serving with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers except for a short period with the Leinster Regiment, 1890-93 He went to the R.H.M. School for military music in 1904 and retired from regular service in 1907. sold with some copied research details.
WWI Interest Military Cross (MC) Awarded to 2nd Lieut JH Goode Som L.I - later to be Captain for exemplary gallantry in the field, 'Forces War Record' as follows Gazette date 08-01-1918. Gazette page 609, John Henry Goode. Gazette issue 30466. M.C. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack on a village he found himself in charge of his company when his commander was wounded, and when the company in front of him lost direction and moved off to a flank, he promptly led his company up to the village, captured the first objective, and then went on to capture the second. By his quick grasp of the situation he was able to fill a dangerous gap in our leading wave, and during the clearing of the village he also showed the greatest gallantry and fearlessness, killing several of the enemy with his own hands. Awarded the Military Cross. Also awarded 114-1915 Star when Sgt Major 'acting'. The Croix De Guerre 1914-1918 medal and The Great War For Civilisation 1914-1919 medal. After WWi he continued to serve with distinction and courage.
