Ferrier; 1 A.L.S. and 1 autograph poem, 7 newspaper articles on criminal cases by J.K. Ferrier for The Weekly Record [1926], letter & Special Commemorative Diploma of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition for J.K. Ferrier of Scotland Yard as custodian of the Finger-Print Exhibit, 1904, cased commemorative bronze medal of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, typescript biography of J.K.F. by "D", two T.L.S. from T. Dickerson Cooke with an 18pp. copy of his lecture to the International Association for Identification convention in St. Louis on the importance of Ferrier to the history of finger-printing in the U.S.A., and 2 other items. Note: Detective Inspector Ferrier of Scotland Yard played a crucial role in the introduction of finger-printing into the U.S.A. when he arrived at the Louisana Purchase Exposition in 1904. Ferrier caught an Englishman posing as a Scotland Yard officer detailed by King Edward to guard the Jubilee gift exhibit, and recorded his finger prints for the St. Louis Police Department`s Identification Bureau, making them the first finger prints of a criminal recorded in the U.S.A., and St. Louis` the first police department in the U.S.A. with a finger print department. Ferrier went on to teach other American and Canadian police officers the infant science of finger print identification.

Ballard, 2nd Yeo Sigs, HMS Racer), 1914-15 star (124134 A Ballard YS RN), BWM, Victory (CYS), Naval LS & GC, Vic issue (Arthur Ballard, Ch Yeo Sig, HMS Blenheim), VF and EF, together with original and copy certificates of service 1885-1906 (followed by 8 yrs in reserve), 1914-1918; various photos, postcards, letters, cuttings etc, "Crossing the Line" certificate Feb 1915, telescope by Ross of London, with cane herringbone strip covering to barrel and engraved "A. Ballard CYS...RN" (some wear, cane covering repaired); and recipient`s "Reminiscences" diary covering Aug 3 1914 "I received orders to report myself to the Royal Naval Barracks at Devonport, as all reserves and penioners were called into active service..." to Jan 2nd 1917, beautifully written and including an account of the sinking of the German armed liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse whilst Ballard was serving aboard HMS Highflyer "Aug 26th..1.30pm Highflyer sighted German armed liner Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse who had been harrasing (sic) British trade in South Atlantic, coaling and at anchor in Ouro River from two colliers...At 2.25pm Highflyer signalled ...I call on you to surrender" to which she replied..."German Men of War do not surrender, hope you consider Spanish neutrality", 2 more requests and refusals follow until at "3.10pm fired 6" gun well to the right of the .. steamer as a warning, the K W Der G immediately opened fire with her two foremost guns. General action then ensued. 4.25 Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse ceased firing, 4.30 Highflyer ceased firing, 4.40 Highflyer signalled Am unwilling to cause unnecessary loss of life and will give you an opportunity to leave your ship in boats. 4.40 boats were lowered on starboard side and crew taken onshore, approximate number 150, loss of life about 500. Highflyer one killed 5 slightly wounded. 4.50 signalled If you will haul down your ensigns I will send boats & medical assistance. No reply, 5.10 Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse sank". Ballard was paid 24/3/4d from naval prize fund for this action. Plate 1

Gren.Rgt.3, together with a promotion certificate from Rottwachtmeister der Schutzpolizei to Wachtmeister, dated September 1944, and Britische Zone Personal Ausweis (repaired); the medals and insignia attactively displayed in a glazed wooden case togehter with a Hamburg Cross holders old comrades cardboard badge dated 1934, various medal ribbon bars and buttonhole badges, stick pins with miniatures of the medals, a Mothers Cross in bronze with ribbon, and another badge.
