Royal Army Medical Officer’s India General Service Medal, clasp “Afghanistan NWF 1919”. Awarded to “MAJ T.W.O. SEXTON RAMC”. Major Timothy William Octavius Sexton served with the British Expeditionary Force landing in France in August 1914, he was attached to 44th Battery XLIV (Howitzer) Brigade Royal Field Artillery. In January 1917, he commanded Valletta Military Hospital Malta. He was later posted to Salonika and then India until 1926, when he retired from the army.

Davison’s Nile Medal in Bronze. Attributed HMS Majestic. A scarce example of the bronze medal issued to ratings who had been present at the Great Victory on the 1st August 1798. The reverse of this example with stamped name “Richard Axford Majestic”. Heavy pitting and edge knocks. Fitted with later ribbon suspension. HMS Majestic was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line, she fought at the Battle of the Nile, where she engaged the French ships Tonnant and Heureux, helping to force their surrenders.

Victorian Sea Gallantry Medal Large Bronze 1881. Awarded to Charles Southerden who was an assistant to the Rocket Party. The edge of the medal is engraved “CHARLES SOUTHERDEN WRECK OF THE “FRANC SICARD” ON THE 27TH NOVEMBER 1881”. Charles Southerden was awarded the medal for his part in the rescue of the crew of the French Lugger Franc Picard on the 27th November 1881, when she became stranded near the coastguard station of Jury’s Gap.

Royal Engineers Armstrong Memorial Prize Medal 1910. Awarded to “JAMES A.C. PENNYCUICK JULY 1910”. This medal was designed, by F. Bowcher, and depicts to the obverse a bust of Col R.Y.Armstrong C.B., Royal Engineers. The reverse: a hand thrust upwards from a mural crown grasping winged thunderbolts and lightning, “Armstrong Memorial Prize”Colonel J.A.C. Pennycuick DSO landed in France in August 1914, surviving the war he remained with the Royal Engineers and was promoted Colonel in 1938.

Officially impressed.Private Elijah Johnston a native of Siddington was a labourer by trade when he enlisted into the 46th Foot. He sailed with the regiment for the Crimea landing at Balaklava on the 8th November 1854. He died at Scutari on the 28th March 1855.

41st Bengal Native Infantry Surgeon’s Afghanistan 1880 Medal. Awarded to “SURGN E.S. BRANDER MB 41ST BEN N.I.”. Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel Edward Salisbury Brander IMS was born in 1854, being the second son of General Mangles James Brander of the Bengal Staff Corps. After qualifying he was appointed a Surgeon in the Bengal Medical Department 1st October 1877. On the 27th January 1880 he was posted to the 41st (Gwalior) Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry. He remained with the regiment until August of the year. Appointed Major 1889, Lt Colonel 1897 and died in 1902.Confirmed as serving with the 41st Bengal Native Infantry in the Khyber Line Force.

Bearing the clasps “Cape Colony”, “Orange Free State”, “Belfast”, “South Africa 1901”. This appears to be an official re-named example, impressed style naming. Ghost dates to reverse.Captain Edward George Clarkson Bagshawe, was born in 1879, serving with the Yorkshire Regiment during the Boer War, at the outbreak of the Great War he landed in France with the 5th battalion during May 1915. He was wounded in early 1916, returning to his unit he was Killed in Action on the 20th July 1916, by a sniper whilst inspecting mine damage to a trench. Clasps entitlement not confirmed.

Accompanied by a quantity of research.Second Lieutenant Frederick Harold Ashley Woodward was commissioned into the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, he is noted as landing in France with the 10th Bn on the 23rd July 1916. His records show he was wounded in November 1916, with the 10th Bn, returning to England on the 7th December. He was wounded by shrapnel in the right leg and did not return to France.

Corporal Alfred Frederick Stone enlisted in 1904 at the age of 15 years, his address given as a Frome Union Workhouse. He embarked to South Africa in 1904 with the Regiment and returned to the UK in 1914 landing in France on the 5th October 1914. It appears he was wounded in March 1918 which resulted in his discharge.

Royal Navy two clasp Naval General Service Medal “Nile”, “Acre 30 May 1799” Awarded to “WILLIAM HUGHES”. “ACRE” clasp professionally added to “NILE” clasp on a two clasp carriage in recent years. Medal is accompanied by a quantity of research.Able Seaman William Hughes is confirmed as serving onboard HMS Leander earning the clasp “Nile”. At the Battle of the Nile Leander under, Captain Thomas Thompson was able to exploit a gap in the French line and anchor between Peuple Souverain and Franklin, from which position she raked both enemy ships while protected from their broadsides. In the battle she suffered only 14 men wounded. The clasp “Acre 30th May 1799”, does not appear on the NGS Roll, however it has been confirmed that William Hughes was serving as an Able Seaman onboard HMS Alliance under the command of Captain David Wilmot. She was one of three ships present which received the clasp. William Hughes is shown on the muster books joining Alliance 5th January 1799, having formally served on Vanguard, late Leander. HMS Vanguard suffered many casualties during the Battle of the Nile and Hughes could easily be transferred in to make up the crew. He was still on the ships muster roll on the 30th May 1799 and was therefore present at the defence of Acre.

Royal Navy HMS Arethusa Naval General Service Medal, clasp “Curacoa” Awarded to “JAMES SMITH” Confirmed on the NGS Roll as serving as an Ordinary Seaman onboard HMS Arethusa a 38 gun Minerva class fifth-rate frigate. She was present with three other frigates at the capture of the fortified island of Curacoa. A total of 62 clasps were awarded with 13 going to Ratings of the Arethusa. The Roll shows the medal being sold at Whitehouse 1869 and Cheylesmore in 1930, at that time with two clasps. Multiple name on various rolls

This medal is shown in the G.H. Roll as spelt “TORNTON” The history of this medal is known from the the McKenzie Collection 1873, Cheylesmore July 1930 and Christies November 1988. HMS Dictator was a 64 gun third rate ship of the line. 47 Clasps awarded.

WW2 Bomber Command Air Gunners Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) Group of Five. Awarded to Flight Sergeant William Alexander Mclean, an air gunner with 158 Squadron which operated the Halifax bomber. Comprising: Distinguished Flying Medal, “1563607 F/SGT W.A. McLEAN RAF”, 1939/45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. Mounted for display.London Gazette 13th April 1945. The Recommendation was raised on the 15th January 1945“Flight Sergeant McLean has completed and excellent tour of 33 operational sorties as an Air Gunner with this squadron. Of these 17 have been against major German targets such as Berlin, Magdeburg, Duisburg, Essen, Stuttgart and Brunswick. An able gunner with excellent practical and technical knowledge of his trade. Flight Sergeant McLean has flown with a considerable number of different Captains and by his vigilance and accurate reporting of enemy fighter movements has ensured the complete successful completion of many sorties. Under the severest fire his courage has been tested and found unshakeable and in emergencies he has displayed excellent qualities of first class airmanship and initiative. On the ground he has been able and willing helper in the work of training new gunners on the Squadron. It is recommended that this gunner’s excellent record of service, his courage and unfailing devotion to duty throughout a hazardous tour be recognised by the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.Pilot Officer William Alexander Mclean was posted into 158 Squadron operating the Halifax Bomber from Lissett in Yorkshire on the 1st March 1944. After the completion of his tour he was commissioned Pilot Officer on the 27th July 1945 and was still serving in 1951 with the RAFVR.

WW2 RAF Bomber Command 1944 Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM). Awarded to “994059 F/SGT W.E. ARUNDALE RAF”. who won the Distinguished Flying Medal whilst serving with 12 Squadron which operated the Lancaster Bomber. Suspension slack.The recommendation was raised on the 14th January 1944.Flight Sergeant Arundale is one of the most experienced Air Gunners in the Squadron. After completing a lengthy tour of operations in the Middle East including targets such as Tobruk, Heraklion (Crete) and Mursa-Matruh during the enemy great 1942 offensive, he is now well into his second tour, the main feature of which is six successive visits to Berlin. Such a record bares testimony to this NCO’s remarkable quality and indomitable fortitude. His experiences are a fine incentive to the other gunners in the Squadron into whom he has inspired the highest standard of morale. Flight Sergeant Arundale fully merits the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.

Comprising: Distinguished Flying Cross (1945), 1939/45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. The DFC contained in original case with Buckingham Palace letter.... The medal group is accompanied by a large quantity of original ephemera including operational log book. The log records flights from 22nd March 1943 until the 11th March 1945 a daylight op to Essen. 34 Day and Night operations are recorded ... Training books. ... Maps including heavy flack areas maps of Koln, Kassel, original photographs in uniform, etc. plus some research.Flight Lieutenant Hugh Willoughby John Sweny volunteered for aircrew training and after been posted to Canada started training on the 9th March 1943. Returning to the UK and further training he was posted to 51 Squadron and flew his first operation, a daylight op to the flying bomb sites on the 17th July 1944. After this he flew regularly day and night targets included Kiel, Essen, Cologne, Hanover etc. He completed his tour with 34 raids under his belt.

Corresponding miniature medal pair mounted as worn. .... 1943 Royal Marine Commando Green Beret by Kangol Wear Limited and dated 1943 (Some service ware) cap badge absent. ... Selection of original photographs of MacCormick and other Commandos. ... Original Certificate of Service etc. A good grouping. Lieutenant John MacDonald MacCormick was born in 1926 working as a Junior Clerk, he enlisted into the “Royals” on the 21st April 1943. After Commando training he was promoted Lance Corporal in May 1945 and in December of the year was selected fir a commission. He served in German and resigned his commission in July 1947.

The regimental numbers to the medals are confirmed.

Warrant Officer Claude Grantley Beechey after service in South Africa enlisted into the 6th Bn Liverpool Regiment on the 1st April 1908. He landed in France with the Battalion on the 24t February 1915. On the 5th May the same year he was badly wounded during the attack on Hill 60 receiving gunshot wounds to the back and stomach. He was discharged with the silver war badge on the 21st January 1916.

He landed in France on the 21st February 1915. The MIC states that a duplicate MM was issued and sent to the India Office for disposal this would appear to confirm the Indian issue of the trio.

A George V Volunteer Long Service Medal awarded to “884 SJT C SAYLE 7 / VOL BN L’POOL R”.The Isle of Man Volunteers formed part of the 7th Bn King’s Liverpool Regiment and when the Territorial Force was established in 1908, all but one of the volunteer battalions joined. The Territorial and Reserve Forces Act was not extended to the Isle of Man, thus the 7th Battalion remained as the last volunteer force unit in the British Army

Victorian 1st VB Liverpool Regiment Long Service Medal & Certificate. Awarded to “4849 PTE H HALL 1ST VB LIVERPOOL REGT” The medal retains original ribbon and buckle pin fitting as worn. The certificate is dated 13th December 1903 and was awarded for good service.Later Corporal H Hall enlisted in 1877.
