A group of five autograph letters signed, ‘Francis Galton’, 1864/1898, to [Archibald] Smith and other members of his family, the first to Smith dated 11 November 1864, ‘H. James is really in error in believing that the elevation of the Dead Sea has never been determined by actual levelling. In 1843 Lieut. Symondes R.E., received the gold medal of the Geographical Society for having triangulated and levelled between the Mediterranean and Dead Sea. It is worked very carefully. You will see an account of it in vols. 12 & 13 of the Geographical Society’s transactions. believing he was wrong to have thought it had been levelled again in more recent years, but ‘I see that Lynch only used barometers and I suppose. that Van der Weelte did the same. If you do not think it well to press the pendulum matter, pure and simple, there remains nothing else for our Society to take up.’ and suggesting that if he does want to continue that perhaps Everest Waugh, Spottiswoode and one or two others might examine the question and report back, 4 pp., brown stain to lower margins not affecting legibility, 8vo, the second letter to [?] Walter Smith, having forwarded his letter to G. H. Darwin, saying that he does not know the American statistics to which Smith refers and cannot offer an opinion on them but that if he were to work on the subject he should get an old Burke’s ‘Peerage & Baronetage’ and an old ‘County Families’ explaining how he would use these for his anlaysis. Continuing ‘I spent lately a happy day among the idiots at Earlswood [Asylum, Redhill, Surrey], bent on pyschological research. Their very intelligent medical director Dr. Graham makes regular entries of the percentage of the newly received idiots, especially asking as to relationship of parents. He told me that his conclusions entirely coroborrated those of G. H. Darwin and he had briefly stated the same in print.’, with further information on the same subject, 4 pp., plus to letters to Mrs Archibald Smith, the first dated 13 November 1873 asking for information ‘to put together in some MS. volumes, all the materials you possess that illustrate your husband’s life in biographical order.’, 4 pp., the second dated 16 December 1898 hoping to have a fuller account of her son’s excellent work in Africa, etc., 3 pp., plus envelope, and the last to Henry Babington Smith, 15 October 1881, hoping that he can lecture on “the measures of our faculties” at Eton, 2 pp., plus integral blank, plus orig. envelope, all 8vo. He is the last of those later filled a large space in my boyish memory and remained the same kind of warm friend to the last. ‘, 2 pp. with integral blank, the third to Mrs Smith in 1879, concerning the possibilities of a temporary dispersal of the Gordon Hill library of voyages and travels, 4 pp. with orig. stamped and postmarked envelope, the fourth also to Mrs Smith, ‘I thank you very much for sending me “Roadmaking and Sport in C.E. Africa” [by George Edward Smith, 1868-1944], which I have read with great interest and profit; for it gives me a much clearer idea of the nature of the country traversed that I had proposed and of the difficulties to be overcome by your son which called forth all his father’s energies and suppression of self in the work he had in hand. How anxious you must have been during his absence, though I hope you did not hear of his rhinoceros hunting pursuits and narrow escapes. To have two sons who spent years of active and indeed [?] service in E. Africa, and returned to tell of their labours and their adventures is not a boon granted to many parents. ‘, with a mention of [Edward] Sabine, 3 pp., black border, all 8vo. (4).
