FRED KORMIS [1897-1986]. The CAIRD art medal [Sir James Caird]. 1984. bronze relief. Signed, 14 cm high. The Caird medal sculpture is presented once a year [from 1984 onwards] to the distinguished person giving the Caird lecture at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and as such are extremely rare. Sir James Caird was one of the most important patrons of the museum and the library is named after him. Kormis sculpted many portraits, several of which are in the National Portrait Gallery and British Museum – he was also a fine figurative sculptor, particularly his prisoner of war memorials. EXTREMELY RARE. [good condition].

Dated 6th September 1916 AD. Tapered body. Obv: incuse and reversed uniformed profile bust with ALBERT ROI DES BELGES legend in serifed capitals; stamped 6 9 16 on shoulder, with oval maker stamp 2 28 and [R?] WILL & SON BIRMINGHAM around, on side. 1.33 kg, 30mm face, 60mm tall. The diameter of this obverse would be suitable for a coin of 2 or 5 francs module but all Belgian currency coins of Albert use an unserifed font, as do his military medals (which also show a plain bust); this die could be either for a pattern coin during the First World War period or, perhaps, be for a commemorative medal. [No Reserve] Extremely fine; minor corrosion spots. Extremely rare.

19th century AD. Cross crosslet, with suspension loop. Obv: crown over CCI monogram at centre; cross arms hollowed with textured and oxidised background. Rev: plain. 1.08 grams, 17mm. This form of the Danube cross (Crucea Trecerea Dun?rii) was awarded to Russian soldiers who crossed the Danube in April 1877 during the War of Independence against Ottoman Turkey, 1877-1878; the cross was produced in large (normal medal size) form in steel. [No Reserve] Very fine.

Rev: Victory holding cross and sword left with dead Huguenots right with VGONOTTORVM STRAGES 1572 legend. 8.77 grams. Queen Catherine de Medici ordered the slaying of up to 3,000 Huguenot protestants in Paris in 1572 and this event became known as the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre; Gregory XIII was her uncle and 'celebrated' the massacre with a medal. [No Reserve] Good fine.

PIETRO FRAGIACOMO (1856-1922)On the Lagoon, VeniceOil on canvas, 47 x 86cmSignedPietro Fragiacomo was born in the Italian town of Pirano d'Istria near Trieste, but lived most of his life in Venice. He studied for a year in 1877 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Venice.In 1887, he exhibited at the Esposizione di Venezia. In 1889, he won a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 in Paris and took part in the Munich International Exhibition of the same year, as well as later editions. In 1895, his canvas Tristezza (Sadness) won awards in Venice, and again the next year, in Berlin.He painted mainly seascapes and cityscapes of Venice, often at night. He won the Prinze Umberto prize at the Milan Triennale of 1891 and was a regular participant from 1895-1922 at the Venice Biennale, which displayed a solo show of his work in 1910 and a posthumous retrospective in 1924. He died in Venice.

Aralova was married to Lloyd Patterson, an African-American immigrant, who was an actor and speaker on All-Union radio in Moscow. During the Great Patriotic War, she was evacuated to Siberia. In 1930, Aralova made set designs for the Mossovet Theater, Moscow Art Theatre and Drama Theater. In 1948, she began working as an artist-couturier at the Union House of Models, and she was awarded the gold medal at the International competition of clothes in Warsaw (1956). Aralova became a member of the Union of artists of the USSR, and actively participated in solo and group exhibitions. She was awarded the title of honored artist of the RSFSR.THIS LOT IS BEING SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE.
