An India General Service Medal 1854-95 to Acting Bombardier John Newlands, Northern Division Royal Artillery, 3 clasps: Burma 1885-7, Sikkim 1888, Samana 1891 (49902 Actg Bombdr J. Newlands No 9 By 1st Bde N Dn R.A.), engraved. Good very fine or better. Recipient confirmed on the rolls for these campaigns. Formerly with 9/1 Northern Division R.A.; latterly with No 3 Mountain Battery. Clasps with irregular looking rivets, perhaps consistent with separate issue of each.

R.A.F.; France, Croix de Guerre, with Palm; Italy, Order of The Crown, Knight's badge; Medal for Military Valour, silver, reverse engraved 'Whittaker John Tudor/ PIAVE TRENTINO, HIVERNO 1917-18'; War Merit Cross; offered with a small collection of photographs and research, Order of the Crown badge with bend in junction of upper arm causing weakness and slight loss to enamel, medals otherwise good very fine or better. Born in Lewisham 20/02/1894. University School Cadet Corps Hastings; Fesltead School O.T.C.; 103 Calgary Rifles (Canada); Canadian A.S.C.; Joined A.S.C. Salibury Plain 11/11/14; Served with R.F.C. in the field from 17/03/16; Gazetted 2nd Lt. A.S.C. and seconded for duty with R.F.C.; gazetted Flying Officer 04/06/16; 24/07/16 attacked transports on road from Corcelette; 22/08/16 "Captain J.T.P. Whittaker..or 4 Sqn...was attacked in turn by a Fokker biplane and a L.V.G., both of which were driven off" * At 10am on July 1st 1916 (the first day of the Somme), the recipient arrived over the battle front in his BE2c biplane. Observing a German gun position that threatened the beleaguered ground troop he descended to 700 feet to attack it with machine gun fire. He then saluted men of the Liverpool and the Manchester 'Pals' battalions (advancing in one of the more successful areas of the battle) by flying low over their heads and waggling his wings - to be greeting by enthusiastic arm waving.** August of that year found him engaging in successful dog fights with Fokkers, before sustaining a bullet wound to the abdomen, 25/08/16. Thomas Brooks (British 1818-1892)/The Sailor's Return/signed and dated 1852/label verso ' No 1, Relating the perils of a first long cruise' and 'She lov'd him for the dangers he had passed' and 'No 1, Tho's Brooks, 24 Campden Grove, Kensington'/oil on canvas, 85.5cm x 116.5cm/Note: Thomas Brooks, genre painter, born Hull. Exhibited at the RA 1843-1882 and at BI and SS. Many of his pictures depict dramas at sea such a 'The Missing Boat' and 'A Story of the Sea'. The present lot depicts the return of a young sailor to his family home. He bears gifts such as a parrot and tortoise for his enthralled family, who look on at the exotic gifts being produced from his sea chest, the Grandfather wears a naval medal, possibly Trafalgar. This is genre painting at narrative best/see illustration Condition Report: This has been in the family for at least two generations.The surface is dirty with small area of craquelure showing between grandfather's leg and mother's skirt otherwise in lovely condition, in original frame and looks like an exhibition painting but no reference found.

A FRENCH ORMOLU MANTEL CLOCK, 19TH CENTURY the 10,5cm gold dial with raised enamel Roman hour numerals, the bell striking movement, the back plate inscribed Breguet A Paris, numbered 1641, Raingo Frères medal, the dial surmounted by a floral wreath surrounded by scrolling foliage, a pair of figures engaging in front of a pierced panel on a scrolling and pierced plinth base 50cm high Reputable French clockmakers often tended to the King’s extravagant needs and Zacharie Joseph Raingo made no exception, having made a planetarium clock for George IV of England in 1824. Zacharie established Raingo Frères, a renowned clock company and received the title of the “supplier of the King of France”. The company was widely celebrated for their Rococo-style gold plating and elaborate designs, so much so that Emperor Napoleon III and his wife furnished their homes with many of their craftworks. A select few of said pieces are featured in The Louvre in Paris.
