East & West Africa / Anglo-Zanzibar pair to HMS Thrush, East & West Africa 1887-1900 campaign medal with BRASS RIVER bar, and Edward VII LSGC medal to 172482 Petty Officer 1st CLASS W. J. RILEY, HMS. THRUSH; named as ordinary seaman on LSGC to HMS VICTORY. Medals superbly toned, extremely fine, ribbons worn (2), RARE Captained in 1898 by the young Prince George (later George V), HMS THRUSH had played a leading part in the shortest war on record, the Anglo-Zanzibar War which lasted 38 minutes in 1896, where a shore party of navy ratings from HMS Thrush (possibly including Riley, no list exists) were put ashore under Lieutenant Watson to guard the British Consulate. The ship & crew also took part in the assault on King Koko’s stockade on Brass River after the King’s cannibalism of 43 European captives. Research will find other ships & campaigns Riley took part.
Military Cross group of 8, to Lieutenant-Colonel H.H.W.Boyes, Royal Engineers, Great War Military Cross, 1914/15 star (Lieutenant, North Staffs), War & Victory medals (Major); WWII War & Defence; 1953 Coronation, and Territorial Efficiency medal, GRI, engraved (Lt.Col.M.C), court-mounted extremely fine (8) Henry Hugh Whitelock Boyes born in Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland c.1888 , where his father was incumbent of Holy Trinity Church. Captain Boyes was a "Tunnelling Officer" on the Western Front, having transferred to the Royal Engineers from the North Staffordshires in the Autumn of 1915 (officers of relevant experience were sought out in preparation for the `mining` of German positions in the Somme sector).Temporary Lieutenant H H W Boyes MC was promoted to Acting Captain in the Royal Engineers whilst commanding a section of a Tunnelling Company 13 Oct 1915. (LG 29838 dated 24 Nov 1916). Captain H H W Boyes MC RE was promoted to Acting Major with effect 2 Sep 1918. (LG 31110 dated 3 Jan 1919). As temporary Captain Henry H W Boyes MC was also awarded a Mention in Despatches published in the London Gazette 11 December 1917. The Institute of Mining Engineers records (Transactions Volume LIX) for 1919-1920 shows a Henry H W Boyes, registered with the Mining Institute of Scotland, as working at Ropp Tin Mines, Ropp, on the Jos Plateau in Bukuru, Northern Nigeria. The Bulletins of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy for 1946-1947 report that Lt Col H H W Boyes arrived from Northern Nigeria and was appointed as Officer for West Africa He died 20th July 1959.

Died 29th Dec. 1986.
