Unusual First World War Victory Medal (5785 PTE. L. CAMPBELL. YORKS. L.I.) disc only with pin fitting soldered to reverse for wear as a brooch, records show Private Louis Campbell of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry enlisted on 20th July 1898 at Sheffield,having already served for a period of time in the Militia, a bit of a 'character' to say the least, at various times losing rank, forfeiting Good Conduct Badges and being confined for 'when on active service using insubordinate language to his superior officer' on 8/3/01, appears to have had a problem with urinating in inappropriate places in the barracks when drunk, served in the South African War from 1899-1902, admitted to hospital on several occasions to be treated for gonorrhoea, discharged to the reserve 1910, mobilized 5th August 1914, wounded in action (gunshot wound testicles) October 1914, awarded 7 days Field Punishment No.1 March 1915 then 28 days F.P. No1 on 31st March 1915 (must have really upset the C.O.!) gunshot wound left leg May 1915, entered France on 1st October 1914 and entitled to the 1914 Star, 1914-1918 British War Medal, and Victory Medal, discharged 24th November 1915

Rare First World War attributed Royal Engineers Tunnelling Company Pick, made by the Hardy Patent Pick Company of Sheffield, the Acme No 1 pick was used by miners in the UK, double edged with detachable head for ease of shapening and retempering, top strap marked with makers name and stamped with broad arrow, the letters 'TE' and the date 1915, ash shaft stamped 'H. LEATHER R.E.', records show that 132573 Sapper Hubert Leather, born 1893, trade, miner, enlisted on 5th October 1915, finding that he 'posesses the necessary qualifications for rating as a tunneller..' he joined 252 Tunnelling Company R.E. entering France on 25th October 1915, 252 Tunnelling Company was engaged with digging the H3 Mine under the Hawthorne Ridge Redoubt during the preperations for the battle of the Somme, he later joined 175 Tunnelling Company R.E. in the Ypres Salient, he is shown as entitled to the 1914-15 Star, 1914-1918 British War Medal, and Victory Medal, a label attached to the pick reads, 'Note by Sapper H. Leather T.C., He was putting a borehole in a sap when the Germans heard him, his auger hit some timbers in an old gallery, the Germans, who must have been listening, charges ready, blew their counter charge, Leather was blown about 10 yards back along the gallery, crawled back to the officers dugout & was given a halful mug of rum, he waited 2 hours for the gas to clear & was sapping there again the same night', pick head 30 cm in length, ash shaft 70 cm

Rapsey, Royal Signals, who served in North Africa and Italy and who landed on Gold Beach on D-Day as a Major and Second in Command of 8 Armoured Assault Brigade Group Signal Squadron, the ephemera includes a printed and bound personal account of the D-Day landings written by Fred Rapsy in 1994, a British army message Form ( Army Form C1236) from 30 Corps to 8 Armoured Brigade marked SECRET, MESSAGE READS 'first, hostilities on Corps fronts cease 050800 B, divs will stand fast and hold present fronts, ops will not cont, passage of displaced persons over HAMME canal will cease, divs will be responsible for est necessary control within their bays on all crossings, ack all informed', the form bears an Army Signals stamp the date of which is hard to read but appears to be '4.V.45', another Message Form from 8 Armoured Brigade to 30 Corps regarding arrangements for taking over the responsibility for Hanover from the Americans, the Supplement to the London Gazette dated 11 July 1947 stating 'The undermentioned to be Lts., 12th July 1947 with seniority as shown, 2nd Lt. (War Subs Capt.) E. Jones, L. Signals R.E.' and stamped 'Passed by censor No. 6742', records show 36264 Sapper Edward Jones of the Royal Engineers entered France on 27th May 1915 and entitled to the 1914-15 Star, 1914-1918 British War Medal and Victory Medal, Edward Jones is the vendors great uncle and it is believed he brought the German items back from France, (qty)
