This may have been due to him being part of the "Forlorn Hope" after the blowing of the Kashmir Date in the Seige of Delhi.

Plus a set of miniature medals of the same. Complete in a case. Listed in the London Hospital Gazette 1917 "Temporary Lieutenant James Arthur Liley, R.A.M.C. He attended the wounded in the open, and in the front trenches, under very heavy shell-fire. His coolness under heavy fire had a great moral effect on the men". Other research confirms he was wounded himself in 1917.
