Great War Distinguished Conduct Medal Group of Three 17th Battalion Welsh Regiment, Decorated for Gallantry in Carrying Wounded Comrades Under Heavy Fire, consisting of George V Distinguished Conduct Medal (D.C.M) “26892 PTE H HOLMAN 17/WELSH R”, British War and Victory medals “26892 W.O. CL 2 H HOLMAN WELSH R”. The medals remain in generally good condition, each medal has been individually court mounted. The citation for the award of the DCM is as follows, “26892 Pte (A/CSM) H Holman. Conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When a raid had been frustrated by heavy hostile fire, he organised the removal of the wounded, carrying several of them himself under a hail of bullets at short range. He appeared to bear a charmed life, and his gallantry and devotion to duty were most extraordinary. (25.8.17)”

Padded kings crown RAF pilots wings above tunic medal ribbon bars of Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Flying Medal and 1939-45 star. Rank lace to the cuffs. Area of damage to one arm and expected service wear. Interior pocket having Austin Reed tailors label with inked name “HOLLIDAY F O”.The award of the Distinguished Flying Medal (D.F.M) was awarded whilst serving with No70 Squadron, the citation for the award is as follows, “As a Captain of aircraft Sergeant Holliday has shown a fine spirit and set an excellent example to the other members of his flight. During a recent period of intensive operations he continued to fly although suffering from a disability which necessitated his neck and chin being bandaged.”He earnt the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C) whilst serving with No105 Squadron, the citation for the award is as follows, “Now on his second tour of operational duty, this officer has participated in many sorties against important and heavily defended German industrial targets. He has throughout shown courage and cool judgement which coupled with his outstanding skill as a pilot, have enabled him to complete many difficult missions.”

Great War 1918 Palestine Casualty Medal Group 2nd Battalion Royal Highlanders The Black Watch, consisting of British War and Victory medals “S-22455 PTE J SEATH R HIGHRS”, Bronze memorial plaque “JOHN SEATH”, photograph of his grave, memorial plaque forwarding slip, silk commemorative ribbon with image of Private Seath and single fibre identity tag. Private John Seath was born in Rosswell Midlothian 1896. He enlisted in the 2nd battalion the Royal Highlanders at Perth. He served with the regiment in Palestine. He died on the 10th November 1918 and is buried at Ramleh War Cemetery in Israel.

Great War 1917 Casualty 10th London Regiment Officers Medal Group of Three, consisting of 1914 star “2213 PTE G W HILLS 1/16 LOND R”, Allied Victory medal “2 LIEUT G W HILLS” and Bronze Memorial plaque “GEOFFREY WILFRID HILLS”. All remain in good condition overall. 2nd Lieutenant G W Hills served in France from the 1st November 1914 with the 1/16th London regiment. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 4th December 1915. He was killed in action on the 14th June 1917 whilst serving with the 10th London regiment. He was 22 years of age at the time of his death. He is buried at the HAC Cemetery, Ecoust-St Mein, Pas de Calais, France.

Outstanding Great War Military Cross & Bar Medal Group of Five Awarded to Captain H M Kitchen 36th Battalion Machine Gun Corps, the group consists of George V Military Cross (M.C) with second award bar, the reverse engraved “LIEUT HUGH MELVILLE KITCHEN MACHINE GUN CORPS ST QUENTIN 21ST MARCH 1918”, British War and Victory medals “CAPT H M KITCHEN”, 1937 George VI Coronation medal privately engraved “MAJOR H M KITCHEN” and Efficiency Decoration with India bar having engraved reverse “MAJOR H M KITCHEN 1BN E.R.RY R.A.F.I”; first four awards court mounted for display and the last is housed in its Royal Mint case. Hugh Melville Kitchen was originally from Glasgow, Scotland. He disembarked for France with the Machine Gun Corps on 1st July 1916. Whilst serving with the 36th Battalion Machine Gun Corps he was heavily involved in the defensive operations at St Quentin on 21st March, which was the first day of the German Spring Offensive also known as Kaiserschlacht. The allied forces suffered the second heaviest loss of men on this day, only 1st day of the battle of the Somme did the allies loose more men, both killed and wounded. The regimental war diaries for this period mention Hugh Melville Kitchen a number of times. The award of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette 16th September 1918, the citation is as follows, “T./Lt. Hugh Melville Kitchen, M.G.C. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to He kept his guns in action throughout the day against repeated enemy attacks, holding his position to the last. Some days. later he organised a party of machine gunners acting as infantry, and charged the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties and driving them back. He showed fine courage and dash”. The award of the bar to the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette 30th July 1919, the citation as follows, “T./Lt. (A./Capt.) Hugh Melville Kitchen, M.C., 36th Bn. M.G. Corps. For most conspicuous gallantry, dash and initiative during offensive operations near Moorseele on October 15th 1918. When the advance was being checked by an enemy machine-gun he rushed forward alone across an open field to within twenty yards of the gun, lay down in the open, and shot at the enemy gun team with his rifle. He hit two, and the remainder got up and ran. He then turned the enemy machine-gun on to the retreating party, killing all except the officer, whom he ran after and took prisoner. He did splendid work, and his action saved the attacking troops many casualties and enabled them to continue the advance.” After the war he continued to serve in the British Army in India.

Rare Elizabeth II Gulf War 1990-91 Campaign Medal to Romanian Hospital Staff, the medal with single clasp 16 Jan to 28 Feb 1991, awarded to “SG C C OPRESCU SP MIL CHR 100”. The medal is mounted for wear. The Romanian Army as part of the Multinational Peace Force in the Persian Gulf, supplied a Military Hospital during the 1990-91 Gulf War. This was a 200 bed hospital and 363 medical staff. Based at Al Fabayl, Saudi Arabia. They provided medical assistance to the British Forces involved in Operation Granby and provided medical assistance to Prisoners of War and civilians.

Victorian Crimea 1854-56 Medal 17th Lancers, medal with single clasp Sebastopol, officially impressed naming, “E LATHAM 17TH LANCERS”, complete with original ribbon and top mount bar. 1487 Edward Latham was born in Doncaster in 1835. He enlisted in the 17th Lancers in January 1855. He joined the regiment in the Crimea from Cork in July 1855. He was awarded the Crimea campaign medal with single clasp Sebastopol and Turkish Crimea medal. He was discharged in August 1856. The 17th Lancers were famous for being the centre during the Charge of the Light Brigade during the battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War.

To the arm is a post WW2 period parachute qualification wing. Tailors label to the interior collar and interior pocket has label with faded name of original owner. ARSENAL FAIRS CUP WINNERS MEDAL 1970 The Fairs Cup winners medals were in the form of a replica trophy mounted on a plinth. These were the actual winners medals / trophies issued by UEFA and presented after the 2nd leg of the Final. Arsenal lost the 1st leg 3-1 in Belgium but triumphed with a 3-0 home win. The trophy is in total 8 inches, 6 inches for the silver hallmarked trophy on a 2 inch plinth. The trophy is inscribed "Coup Internationale Des Villes de Foires Trophee Noel Beard". The plinth has a small metal shield inscribed Arsenal F.C. Winners 69/70 and inscribed on the plinth are the names of all 12 cities that appeared in the first Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Competition 1955-1958. The players were each awarded a trophy but it Is not individually inscribed. There were only 13 Fairs Cup Finals and we are unaware whether this form of medal was issued for each competition, therefore they are scarcely seen. This was Arsenal's first European trophy. Generally good

KITCHENER HERBERT: (1850-1916) 1st Earl Kitchener. British Field Marshal associated with the Boer War. Kitchener also played a central role in the early part of World War I.A good A.L.S., Kitchener, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 15th November 1904, to Beauchamp Duff ('My dear Duff'), on the printed stationery of the Commander in Chief in India. Kitchener announces 'I quite like the notice in the Pioneer that commands remain commands & do not become Army Corps until they go into the field. You might let this be known' and further adds that he has 'been bothered by home' to recommend a medal for Aden, although has not done so, and also remarks 'We must work up the decentralism of work from commands to divisions. When I get back I hope to take this up so please collect notes etc. on the subject' before concluding 'People at home recommend the abolition of commands & making 9 divisions correspond with Hd. Qts. I should like to do it if I could but doubt financial possibility'. A letter of good content and association. Some extremely minor, light age wear and a few traces of former mounting, otherwise VG Beauchamp Duff (1855-1918) Scottish General with the British Indian Army, Commander-in-Chief of India during World War I.  Kitchener served as Commander-in-Chief of India from 1902-09 and one of his first tasks was to plan the reorganisation and redistribution of the army in India. His proposed reforms were initially supported by the Viceroy, Lord Curzon of Kedleston, although the two men eventually came into conflict. Provenance: The present letter was previously the property of the English comedian Frankie Howerd (1917-1992) and sold at auction as part of his estate in December 2005.

OLYMPICS: John Akii-Bua (1949-1997) Ugandan Hurdler, the first Olympic Champion from his country following his Gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Rare signed colour 6 x 4 promotional image issued by Puma and featuring an image of Akii-Bua in a full length action pose on a track. Signed ('Akii-Bua') in bold black ink with his name alone to a clear area of the image. Autographs of Akii-Bua are rare in any form as a result of his untimely death at the age of 47; Gabriel Tiacoh (1963-1992) Ivory Coast Sprinter, the first Olympic medal winner from his country following his Silver medal in the 400 metres at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Rare blue ink signature ('Gabriel Tiacoh') on a slim oblong 8vo printed piece featuring his name and a logo. Autographs of Tiacoh are rare following his tragic death at the age of 28; Grete Waitz (1953-2011) Norwegian Marathon Runner, Silver medallist at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Bold blue ink signature ('Grete Waitz') on a white card. VG, 3

NATAL: An excellent selection of A.Ls.S., a few Ds.S. etc., by various Governors, Prime Ministers and other officials related to Natal comprising Henry McCallum (1852-1919, English Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1901-07; A.L.S. on the printed stationery of Government House, Natal, to a gentleman concerning his desire to secure local contracts for supplies and stating, in part, 'I went into [Percy] Girourad's figures after he left and found they were not altogether sound. I took the whole Natal military traffic, calculated what it would cost over the East London Johannesburg (centre of gravity) route and compared it with the Durban Johannesburg rates. With goods at 2s. per ton per mile the Natal bill is somewhat the smaller. Mr [David] Hunter has gone to Pretoria with an offer to make a fresh start on very liberal terms wh. I hope will be acceptable to the C-in-C. There is an excellent Imperial feeling here wh. I shall take advantage of', May 1901 and a T.L.S. thanking his correspondents for their Address and expressions of loyalty and referring to Umkomaas, commenting 'I trust that the Marine Residence of the Governor at Durban will be sufficiently pushed forward between this and next winter to allow me the opportunity of making it a pied a terre for visits to those parts of the Colony comprised in the north and south coasts and in Zululand. δ Conway (Stephen, binder).- Myers (Colin) The Book Decorations of Thomas Lowinsky, with a Memoir by Katherine Thirkell and an Annotated Checklist by Oliver Clark, one of 5 specially-bound copies by Stephen Conway signed and dated by the binder, from an edition limited to 250, samples and illustrations, one hand-coloured, many tipped in, bound in brown goatskin-backed boards covered with hand-painted paper and edged in cloth at fore-edge, upper cover with large recessed shaped panel covered in black paper onlaid with a mosaic of examples of Lowinsky's hand-writing, paste-paper endpapers, uncut, preserved in felt-lined black cloth drop-back box, spine with author's name and "TL" in gilt, small folio (c.335 x 240mm.), Oldham, Incline Press, 2001.⁂ Stephen Conway (b.1958) won the Designer Bookbinders Silver medal in 1998, was elected Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000, and in 2013 served as President.
