A First World War Military Cross groupcomprising 1914-15 Star named to "13516 SJT. W.J. BATHURST., S. STAFF. R.", 1914-18 War Medal and Victory Medal, named to "Capt. W.J Bathurst" and Military Cross, unnamed as issued, in original case. (4)Sold together with copies of medal records and his citation for the M.C which reads, 'During active operations, he sent valuable reports, obtained by personal reconnaissance at great risk. Later, his company went through a village under a terrific fire from machine guns. He showed remarkable courage on this occasion and was dangerously wounded'. Gazetted 29th November 1919. Notes: William John Bathurst was entitled to the 1914-15 Star with the Staffordshire Regiment before transferring to the Cheshire Regiment and being awarded the War Medal, Victory Medal and Military Cross.

A First World War Trio of medals comprising 1914-15 Star, named to "2876 L. Cpl. T.L Jones, R.Fus" and a War Medal and Victory Medal, named to "SPTS-2876 Cpl. T.L Jones R. Fus." Notes: Thomas Llewellyn Jones served in the 24th (Service) Bn (2nd Sportsman's), The Royal Fusiliers and saw action in France. Rather than be taken from a small geographical area, these particular battalions were primarily made up of men who had made their name in sports such as cricket, golf, boxing and football or the media. It was intended for upper and middle-class men, physically fit, able to shoot and ride, up to the age of 45. The 24th (Service) Battalion (2nd Sportsman's) was raised in London on 20 November 1914 by Mrs Cunliffe-Owen, became attached to 99th Brigade, 33rd Division in June 1915 and transferred to 5th Brigade in 2nd Division in December 1915. Famous recruits included the millionaire politician Sir Herbert Raphael and cricketer C. P. McGahey. Training took place at Hare Hall near Romford. Amongst those recruited was Frederic Thomas Horne, the Liberal Agent for West Gloucestershire, who fell at the Somme on 5 September 1916.

R." with three ribbon bar and silver rosette (denotes clasp awarded) together with 1914 brass Christmas box with Christmas card, employment card and registration card, and a silver war badge numbered 115524.1848 Rifleman Thomas Ward, 1/16th Queen's Westminster Rifles, confirmed on medal rolls and silver war badge records. Attestation forms show Ward was 26 years old at enlistment and reached the Expeditionary Force in France on 1st November 1914. He was discharged on 8th August 1916.

R.” comprising 1914-15 Star, War Medal and Victory Medal (3)Notes: William Albert Lawrence (b.1892 in Berkshire) served with the 6th (Service) Battalion of the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire) Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916 and commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial to the missing in France.1st Jul 1916 In Action 6th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment's War Diary records: 12 Midnight - Battalion in forming up trenches in A2 subsector Carnoy 7am - Coys report all ready and everything in order.7.28 am - Casino Point mine exploded - some casualties caused by debris thrown back into our first two assembly trenches. First wave advanced into No Mans's Land. 7.30 - Attack launched - First wave takes Mine Trench and Casino Point. 7.32 - Second wave advanced from forming up point in No Man's land. 7.35 - First batch of 6 prisoners brought in, shoulder straps, button and all papers sent by special runner to Brigade Advanced Report centre. 3rd wave moved forward from our line.7.50 - First wave reached Pommier Trench having suffered heavy casualties. Lt Hollis went forward to Bund Support and reported Capt Litten killed and no officers remaining with left leading Coy (B Coy). Capt McArthur wounded. Capt Longhurst wounded has ordered 2/Lt Courage to move up and take command of B Coy. As far as known Capt Fenner still with A Coy but 2/Lt Collot and Lt Traill killed. Bombardment of Pommier Redoubt continued. Bombers of B Coy and Btn Bombers start bombing up Popoff Lane. Vickers Guns sent up to get in position near junction of Popoff Lane and Pommiers Trench. Norfolks held up round the Loop, right flank exposed. Work of consolidation started. Suffering severe casualties from MG in the Loop. 9.30 - Pommier Redoubt assaulted and taken, line starts to advance towards Montauban Alley. 9.35 - Bn HQ moved to Pommiers Trench. 2Lt Hollis remained in old Report Centre. No communication except by visual, all wires broken in many places.9.40 - Adjt sent to reconnoitre and report on 1 situation as Brigade calling for information. 10.0 - Adjt reports:“Norfolks on our tight: not advancing, A Coy have made a succession of bombing posts with LGs to protect their flank and are working up Loop Trench, strong opposition against them here. our right is very exposed. On left we are in touch with Bedfords and are advancing up Montauban Alley by bombing. Have suffered heavy casualties especially among Officers" Reported verbally to Brigade. 10.40 Reported that Norfolks have taken Loop. Pi/3 sent to Brigade. 10.50 - Norfolks still held up at Back Trench and Boche Trench. Two unemployed Stokes Guns found and sent to support attack in Loop Trench.4.45 - Situation reported to Brigade in Pi/80.4.50 - Brigade report verbally a rebombardment of Caterpillar Trench and Montauban Alley. We urgently request them to cancel this as our two bombing attacks are advancing successfully.5.20 - Brigade report verbally rebombardment put off 30 mins. Our advance has progressed considerably and the two parties only separated by 50 yds.5.40 - Rebombardment cancelled. Montauban Alley and Loop Trench taken, line pushing on to final position & objective. 5.45 - Loop Trench handed over to Norfolks who we advised to bomb up Caterpillar Trench. 6.10 - Situation reported to Norfolk HQ see Pi/85. 6.15 - Bn HQ moved up into Montauban Alley, communication by wire with Brigade HQ established. 6.30 - Final objective reached. Work of consolidation progressing satisfactorily. Supplies of ammunition, food, water, bombs, grenades and a flame projector brought up.

An interesting accumulation of items relating to William ‘Jim’ John Ashman, who travelled from Britain to the United States and enlisted with the 4th Infantry (Machine Gun Company) during the Mexican Revolution and U.S. Occupation of Veracruz before subsequently returning home to serve with the British Armed Forces in WW1. Comprising: Two large panoramic albumen photographs: 5th Brigade Camp, Fort Crockett, Texas, photo copyright 1915 by Medley and Henningsen; and 4th & 7th Infantry Camp, Fort Crockett, Texas 1914, photo copyright Medley and Glandford, each measuring 128cm x 23.5cm (previously framed, now rolled) Approximately 156 loose printed and real photographic postcards relating to America and Mexico, circa 1912-15. Subjects include military camp life and soldiers in Galveston and Veracruz, boxing matches and group portraits; the wreck of a U.S aeroplane at No. 11 Mobilization camp, Texas City; portrait of General Pancho and Mrs Villa; street scenes and views of daily life in Mexico; Mexican outlaws and ‘Mujereres Patriotas’ (with an inscription to reverse ‘I am not afraid of the men but I don’t like to come across this bunch, the women are worse than the men’). Other cards document deaths, damages, and consequences of the invasion, including damage to the Naval School building in Veracruz, prisoners being marched to their execution, and several graphic postcards of such as piles of the dead killed near the customs house (April 21st – 22nd, 1914). A small collection of business and trade cards together with a White Star line ticket (for his return to the UK in 1915), various invitations, business and trade cards. A brass button cleaner and two pocket knives.William John Ashman (b. 16th December 1890 - d. July 1970). Travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia on 18th July 1912. Spent some time working as a cattle rancher before enlisting with the U.S Army on 16th October 1912. Returned home to the UK in 1915. Enlisted with the Welsh Regiment in the same year and later transferred to the Shropshire Yeomanry. Service numbers 320950 and (Tf)396246.The postcards in this lot were sent predominantly to Ashman's sister or parents. The majority are not postmarked, although they are often captioned to the reverse with additional personal commentary by Ashman. Some feature portraits of Ashman, including in uniform and, given his talent for bare-knuckle boxing, during boxing matches in both the United States and at home.
