This large collection of shooting medals were won by Brian Moore of California, along with the following lots 319 - 398, and were all part of his collection, which spanned 60 years. His working experience includes time spend Lockheed working on missile projects, IBM working with moon exploration as commissioned by President John F. Kennedy, and worked at Stanford and University of California in their labs. He was integral to the Moon program and worked with General Curtis Lamay and Buzz Aldrin. He invented, designed, worked on, produced, and solved many of the issues during the early days of U.S. space exploration. He also is credited with inventing and designing the first submarine with umbilical system for underwater launches of missiles in Cape Canaveral. His ability as a marksman, as evidenced by the numerous metals in this collection, was well known. He was a lifetime master in both pistol and high powered rifle. Much of his spare time throughout a span of 50 years was spent at the Napa Rifle Range, but he traveled as far as Japan as the Naval Air Station. The last time he fired a match using iron sights at 1,000 yards was in Hollister, California using his National Match M1 Springfield. He started competing in 1939 and continued for 45 years. It is also very apparent that Brian had a life long love affair with all things mechanical and his passion for the shooting sports was unparalleled. This large collection of shooting medals is encompassed in two period framed collections consisting of 42 medals in each display. It would be extremely tedious to list each and every medal. Most are for revolver and pistol. The dating of the medals in Frame (A) are 1946 to 1960; the majority of the matches were shot in Oakland with some scattered NRA and National Match medals. They are all in excellent shape with ribbons. Frame (B) medals are dated 1946 to 1948 and are also in excellent condition with ribbons. Green background has some fading. It is obvious some medals have some sterling silver and are tarnished. We do not know if any are real gold. Many have the enamel decorations.

The owner of this powderhorn was a Medal of Honor recipient for his services during the Civil War. Curved body deepy inscribed "John Breen/1862" with carved spout. The horn has a wonderful Union style five-pointed lead or pewter star inlaid into the wood plug. Early sailor knot strap attached to the horn. Breen received the United States' highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his action at Petersburg, Virginia on 3 October 1862. He was honored with the award on 3 April 1863. Breen was born in 1827 in Ireland to William and Margaret Breen. He moved to New York and first enlisted into the United States Navy in 1852 under the name Charles Mercer. He was discharged after three years but later reenlisted under his correct name at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. During this service he was assigned to various vessels including the U.S.S. Brandywine, the U.S.S. Seymour and the U.S.S. Commodore Perry. It was aboard the USS Commodore that Breen earned the Medal of Honor for his action on 3 October 1862 in successfully repelling Confederate ground troops positioned at the Blackwater River. Following the war, Breen and his wife, Ellen Grant, relocated to Milwaukee where he continued a career as a sailor. He died on 13 December 1875 of acute pneumonia and his remains are interred at the Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum in Milwaukee. On board the U.S.S. Commodore Perry in the attack upon Franklin, Va., 3 October 1862. With enemy fire raking the deck of his ship and blockades thwarting her progress, Breen remained at his post and performed his duties with skill and courage as the Commodore Perry fought a gallant battle to silence many rebel batteries as she steamed down the Blackwater River. Lot 1057

Typical Ebear pistol from the 1920's. It is based on the early FN model. Produced in Spain. Finished in gold Damascus engraved with real mother of pearl grips. Its appearance is that of an FN Model 1906. Pistol retains approximately 95% of the original gold plating. Pearl grips are near mint. Includes original magazine. Strong rifled bore and perfect action. This presentation pistol comes in a Charles Dickens leather and wood French fitted display case lined in purple velvet. Has an early composition cartridge holder that rests beneath the gun for ten cartridges. Similar gun can be found on page 28 in the book entitled "Astra Firearms" by L. Antaris. Lovely pre-war presentation piece. History: This pistol was once the property of Mr. George J. Carroll who was a sheriff in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the 1930’s. There are several articles pertaining to Sheriff Carroll and a period picture of his weapon collection of which this very gun appears to be dead center. Carroll was elected sheriff in 1920 and also served as US Marshall in the 1940’s. Several notable kidnap and bank robbery cases rocketed Carroll into law enforcement spotlight. He won the Law Enforcement Medal of Achievement in 1945. The 1934 book entitled “The Valley of Grim Men” was dedicated to Carroll. Carroll was also featured in at least 100 detective and crime magazine articles. He played a key role in solving the kidnapping case of Claude K. Boettcher II, scion of one of Denver’s wealthiest families. He was integral in busting the Terrill-Barker gang. Carroll is considered one of the last of the old western style sheriffs and applied his trade throughout the turbulent prohibition years through numerous gun battles.
