COOK, Manitoba Regiment.' William Elliott Cook (1889-1926) was born at Boddington, Coombe Hill, near Cheltenham. He was the son of the miller-farmer, Edward William Cook (b.1859) of Slate Mill, and Elizabeth Betsey Cook (née Parry 1860-1897) the daughter of a local farmer. The Cook’s mill and farm at Boddington extended to 37 acres when William Cook’s Wiltshire-born grandparents (William and Emma Cook) had the property in 1861. He emigrated to Canada in his early twenties and in 1916, aged 25, was living in Oak River, Manitoba. He enlisted at Brandon in April 1916, giving his former occupation as a farmer, and returned to Europe with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the same year. Wounded in France in 1917, he finally returned to England and in 1919 married Eldersfield-born, Julia Chandler Crump (1885-1965). He died aged 37, of an unspecified illness at Maple Leaf Bungalow in Knightsbridge Green, Cheltenham, in February 1926 and was buried at the family church at Boddington, where he shares a gravestone with his wife who died in 1965.
