The Victory and the British War Medal to 234804 W.E. COOK  52 – CAN. INF. War Office Weekly Casualty List Aug 13th 1917 - 'Previously reported missing, now reported wounded 234804 W.E. COOK, Manitoba Regiment.' William Elliott Cook (1889-1926) was born at Boddington, Coombe Hill, near Cheltenham. He was the son of the miller-farmer, Edward William Cook (b.1859) of Slate Mill, and Elizabeth Betsey Cook (née Parry 1860-1897) the daughter of a local farmer. The Cook’s mill and farm at Boddington extended to 37 acres when William Cook’s Wiltshire-born grandparents (William and Emma Cook) had the property in 1861. He emigrated to Canada in his early twenties and in 1916, aged 25, was living in Oak River, Manitoba. He enlisted at Brandon in April 1916, giving his former occupation as a farmer, and returned to Europe with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the same year. Wounded in France in 1917, he finally returned to England and in 1919 married Eldersfield-born, Julia Chandler Crump (1885-1965). He died aged 37, of an unspecified illness at Maple Leaf Bungalow in Knightsbridge Green, Cheltenham, in February 1926 and was buried at the family church at Boddington, where he shares a gravestone with his wife who died in 1965. His name is inscribed with four others on the Boddington Parish Roll of Honour, a stone plaque which was installed inside the church in 1999.

He began contributing drawings to the Graphic and Daily Graphic and other papers early in his career. Around 1899 he went to Australia, where he joined the Queensland Imperial Bushmen during the Boer War, and obtained a commission in the Lancashire Fusiliers, receiving the Queen’s Medal. In 1909 he went to Hong Kong for a year. While there he worked for the South China Morning Post and produced a series of six humorous illustrations of life in Hong Kong. Ref: Lancashire Fusiliers Annual 1914-15, Buckhamshire Members Organisation.
