The surround to the lid stamped "Admiral Lord Nelson, Duke of Bronte". Note: it is not included in the list of medals and boxes in Thomas Hardy's "Nelson Commemorative Medals 1797-1905", R.C.F. together with a Nelson Memorial box medal in card with brass bezel and copper inner, embossed with a portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson. Note: the head appears to be struck from the same die as T A Hardy's box 49 (Nelson Commemorative Medals 1797-1905) but varies in that it does not have Nelson's date of birth and M & P below. Small bronze medal commemorating the return home of Admiral Lord Nelson 1800, obverse features Nelson's bust with pigtail and full uniform, ribbon and Star of Bath and medal around his neck, surrounded by the legend "Admiral Lord Nelson", reverse showing Nelson's ship nearing shore on which Britannia holds out a wreath towards him, legend reads "Hail! virtuous hero, thy victories we acknowledge and they God", further inscribed at base, "Returned to England Nov 5 1800". The medal by T Halliday (see Thomas A Hardy cat no 16). Information: In November 1800, Nelson returned to England owing to ill health, a few days later the new Lord Mayor of London was sworn in and presented Lord Nelson with a sword for his extraordinary services. Info: Collingwood was promoted closely after Lord Nelson and was a firm friend. At Trafalgar he captained The Royal Sovereign and was second in command to Nelson, his ship was the first to break through the enemy lines. A Llama; and a Sheep with a Viscacha Blackboard sketches for a lecture on Tierra del Fuego charcoal and coloured chalk on paper (2) 101.5 x 135cmFootnote: Provenance: Chorley's, Gloucestershire, 'Sir Peter Scott Drawings, Prints, Books and Medals and other items, from the Estate of Lady Philippa Scott', 16th December 2010, lot 92 The only child of the Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and the famous sculptor Kathleen Bruce, Sir Peter Scott was a man of remarkable talent. He was a distinguished ornithologist, conservationist, wildlife artist, broadcaster, and an accomplished sportsman, notably winning a bronze medal in sailing at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was only two years old when his father died in the doomed Terra Nova expedition to reach the South Pole. Sir Peter took an interest in wildlife and natural history at an early age. He went on to study Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, but graduated with a degree in Art History in 1931. He pursued his interests in the arts and wildlife, leading worldwide expeditions to remote places such as Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands. The following lots were originally drawn as blackboard sketches for one of the lectures that Sir Peter gave during such expeditions. Throughout the 1970s, he was a frequent lecturer on the Lindblad Explorer, an expedition cruise ship commissioned in 1969 by the Swedish-born explorer and pioneer of expedition tours, Lars-Eric Lindblad. The voyage to Antarctica started at the world’s southernmost city - Ushuaia - the capital of Tierra del Fuego. Sir Peter served as staff on board of the Explorer alongside other famous people in the expedition world – a fellow painter Keith Shackleton (who was distantly related to Sir Ernest Shackleton), the mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, and the prominent shark experts Ron and Valerie Taylor, among others. In 1951, Sir Peter married Philippa Talbot-Ponsonby with whom he shared his lifelong passion for wildlife conservation. The present blackboard sketches formed part of Lady Scott’s estate which was sold in December 2010.

'Journal kept by Lionel Chichester, Lieutenant 11th (Yorkshire Dragoons) Squadron, 3rd Regiment Imperial Yeomanry while serving in the South African Boer War from February 26th 1901 to January 28th 1902', 2 volumes, c.1902, [7] 169 [i.e. 170] laid-paper typescript leaves (text on rectos only), 116 snapshot-style gelatin silver print photographs mounted versos only to wove-paper interleaves with manuscript captions, 3 full-page pen-and-ink sketch-maps (facing leaves 33, 78 and 108) bound in, 6 further photographs (one annotated 'This is the kopje where your son was killed', another 'Films found in his kodak after the fight [at Middleport]') and manuscript note ('Further extra from this letter. Feb. 23 - "I have kept a diary so far & am sending it home to mother"') laid in, top edges gilt, contemporary tan half calf, spines gilt with red labels, slightly rubbed and scuffed in places, 4to (24.8 x 19.4 cm)Qty: (2)NOTESProvenance: Estate of Commander Michael Guy Chichester RN (1917-2012), nephew of Lionel Chichester. Typescript fair copy of the unpublished Second Boer War journal of Lionel Chichester (1873-1902), apparently compiled by a family member from his diaries after his heroic death in action at Middleport Farm, Calvinia, and profusely illustrated with original photographs and sketch-maps. Educated at Charterhouse, 'Chichester first went out as a trooper with the [City of London Imperial Volunteers] in July, 1900, was present at the battle of Belfast, and then returned with this corps in October 1900, being awarded the medal with three clasps. Anxious, however, to again serve the Empire, and as the war continued, he a second time volunteered, and went out in the [Imperial Yeomanry] in February, 1901, in which he was given a lieutenant's commission ... He saw much service on his return to South Africa, first in the Warrenton and Hoopstad districts, and afterwards with Colonel Doran's column. When he fell, a position, which was fiercely attacked by Smut's Commando, had to be held, and few men were available. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle states, "the Yeomen fought like veterans". A ridge was committed to the charge of Lieutenants Chichester and Tabor, with eleven men of the [Imperial Yeomanry], their instructions being "to hold it to the death". The order was obeyed with the utmost heroism, both officers and six men being killed, and two wounded' (Dooner, The “Last Post”: being a Roll of all Officers … who gave their Lives … in the South African War, 1899-1902 (1903), p. 61.

Brown ink-stamps verso, 16 x 21 cm), 4 large-format views of cruisers at sea (matt finish, toned, one with short closed tear, 30 x 19.5-23 cm), and 5 similar, with envelope and related typed letter to Chichester (dated September 1966), and 2 other personal photograph albums, c.1916-30 (ownership inscriptions of Chichester's wife Eleanor Riddell-Blount, one loose in covers), and a related scrap albumQty: (-)NOTESProvenance: Estate of Commander Michael Guy Chichester RN (1917-2012). Chichester entered naval service in 1935 and was promoted lieutenant on the declaration of war in 1939. He served on HMS Imogen in the Mediterranean Fleet (1939-40), HMS Offa in the Battle of the Atlantic (1942-3), and HMS Belfast from 1943 to 1945, witnessing the sinking of the Scharnhorst at North Cape (1943) and serving in Operation Neptune. After his retirement in 1961 he became a prolific writer on naval affairs and co-wrote The Uncertain Ally: British Defence Policy, 1960-1990 (1982).

Newton, modern cloth-backed stiff wrappers, typed title label to upper cover, slim 8voQty: (1)NOTESAlphonse de Candolle (1806-1893), was the son of botanist Augustin Pyramus de Candolle. He initially studied law, but his interest in botany developed until he finally succeeded to his father's chair at the University of Geneva. He published a number of influential botanical works, including continuations of the Prodromus in collaboration with his son. He developed the first Laws of Botanical Nomenclature, which was adopted by the International Botanical Congress in 1867, and became the prototype of the current International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. In 1855 de Candolle published Géographie botanique raisonnée which was a ground-breaking work, having a significant influence upon Harvard botanist Asa Gray. In 1859 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and in 1889 awarded the Linnean Medal.

Sgt Pilot Paul Farnes WW2 RAF Battle of Britain Pilot signed colour print 12 x 8 inch signed in Pencil. Image of him in uniform. Paul Caswell Power Farnes, DFM, AE (born 16 July 1918) is a former Royal Air Force fighter pilot and Second World War flying ace who flew during the Battle of Britain as one of The Few , during which he scored 8 kills (comprising 7 and 2 shared destroyed, 2 'probables' and 11 damaged). Farnes was mobilised in July 1939. He joined No. 501 Squadron RAF in September 1939 and remained with the squadron when it went to France in May 1940. He claimed his first victories during the Battle of France, with 'shares' in two bombers downed and a He 111 shot down solo. During August 1940 he claimed 5 more and in October 1940 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM). By now a sergeant pilot, he was commissioned a pilot officer (on probation) on 3 December 1940. In February 1941 Farnes was posted to No. 57 Operational Training Unit as an instructor. In November 1941 he transferred to No. 73 Operational Training Unit in Aden. He was confirmed in his rank and promoted to war-substantive flying officer on 3 December 1941. Farnes was posted to No. 229 Squadron RAF in North Africa as a flight commander in February 1942. He flew with the squadron on 27 March 1942 to Malta where he later took command of the squadron. Farnes returned to North Africa in late May 1942. On 26 July 1942, he was promoted to war-substantive flight lieutenant. He was then posted to Iraq, where he joined the RAF headquarters staff and remained there until March 1945, receiving a promotion to war-substantive squadron leader on 1 May 1944. On return to the United Kingdom he took command of No. 124 Squadron RAF, a command he retained until the end of the war. He ended the war with the acting rank of wing commander. Good conditon.
