He obtained an ensigncy during the Crimea later exchanging his commission for Quartermaster, later serving in the Hampshire Militia, comprising Army Meritorious Medal inscribed Sgt Major David Jackson 90th Foot 1847, South Africa Medal dated 1853, Crimea Medal with Sebastapol Clasp, Turkish Crimea Medal dated 1855, Indian Mutiny Medal with Lucknow and Defence of Lucknow Clasps and their miniatures. A South African Medal to Sgt Jackson dated 1853 A/F and Crimea Medal 1854 A/F. Ribbons faded and some damage together with his appointment to Lieutenant dated 1868 under Seal and his appointment to Quartermaster under Seal dated 1856.
