Edward VII Kings South Africa Medal, with two clasps South Africa 1901 and 1902, awarded to 6375 PTE G BURBERY W RIDING RGT. The surname on the medal edge may have been altered, also WWI trio of medals awarded to PTE G H BURBEARY YORKS L I. All medals are presented on a single medal bar but in view of different initials, surname spellings and possible alteration there is no guarantee that all medals relate to the same soldier. Some research papers are included.
WWII RAF Fighter Command Air Crew Europe Star Medal and Log Book Grouping, plus cloth insignia, photographs, ephemera and other miscellaneous items relating to The wartime service of Flying Officer Arthur Bingham. The medal group comprises 1939-1945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star with Rosette, Africa Star with North Africa 1942-1943 clasp, Italy Star, France and Germany Star and 1939-1945 War Medal - accompanied with private purchase miniature medals. The pilot's log books detail the training and combat operation undertaken by Bingham as a fighter pilot, these are accompanied by a selection of photographs, a 126 Squadron patch, two RAF wings patches and Service and Release book.Flying Officer Bingham was born in Liverpool on 13/4/1923 and came from a humble background. He joined the RAF at 17 years of age in 1940 and learned to fly in Canada. On completion of flight training he was involved in heavy air fighting against the Axis powers from mid 1942-late 1944. He served in both the Western Europe and Mediterranean theatres of conflict and flew mostly in Spitfire V's and Spitfire IX's. Thereafter, Flying Officer Bingham had various roles in the RAF until he was demobilised in 1946. He maintained his interest in aviation by joining the RAFVTR and later became a civilian flight controller.Arthur Bingham was not the only member of his family to join the RAF, his brother William also volunteered and joined Bomber Command, where he flew in Lancaster bombers as an Air Gunner. Sadly he was killed in action on 25/4/1944 and he is buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany. Photographs of this brave Airman and his original grave marker are included within this lot. Scarce Collection of WWI Medals and Ephemera, relating to the service of two brothers in the British Army, to collection includes: - Military Medal (MM) awarded to 201909 PTE A Platt 2/4 LN LANC R - TR and British War Medal to 4717 PTE A Platt LN LAN R also included are two Gallant Conduct cards, Military Medal card, personal letters (relating to the award of The MM and notification of wounding, official letters, postcards and pay book. Victory Medal awarded to 28279 GNR H Platt RA with personal condolence letter.Harry Platt was from Bolton, and following enlistment with the Royal Field Artillery, he was subsequently killed in action on 30/7/1917, along with two of his comrades by an exploding German shell. On 2/8/1917 his unit Chaplain wrote a letter to his father advising the circumstances of his death. Gunner Platt has no known grave and his name is recorded on The Menin Gate, Ypres Amos Platt like his brother was from Bolton and he opted to join the Territorial Force 2/4 Loyal North Lancashire regiment, He arrived in France 8/2/1917 and was thereafter involved in heavy fighting at the front, on 10/6/1917 at Le Touquet during the battle of Messines his commanding officer recommended him for the Military Medal for 'Gallantry during a raid on the enemy'.He was subsequently awarded this medal on 1/9/1917. In the meantime further gallant conduct had been recognised on 14 and15/8/1917 at L Epinette. During the course of this engagement he was wounded in the right forearm from a bursting German shell. As a casualty he was subsequently evacuated to the UK for medical treatment where he remained until the end of the war and demobiliation on 12/3/1919.

Two RAF Dress Uniforms (Jacket/Trousers) Formerly worn by the WWII Fighter Pilot Veteran F/O A Bingham, attached are RAF wings, medal ribbons and rank insignia, (these were issued post-war during his time with RAFVTR), also are two books, 'Story of Air Fighting' by Vice Marshall J E 'Johnnie' Johnson and 'R J Mitchell' by Gordon Mitchell - both incorporate personal handwritten messages to F/O Bingham. Also three framed pictures of RAF aircraft. Please note other items relating to F/O Bingham are in Lot 480.
Military Interest - Framed Telex on the Surrender of Germany During The Second World War. This interesting and unique item is a telex message sent to the US Army liberators at the St Valerie Camp. Captain James Moonie - who used an alias when he was a prisoner of war, Bob Lundie - was captured and marched from Dunkirk to Poland. As the highest ranking prisoner in the camp, he was taken to the US Officer, who gave him the telex, which he kept and brought back to Scotland. He was evacuated from Dunkirk, and survived the ordeal, winning a Bravery Medal. James Moonie lived into his 80's with his family in Scotland. This is the original telex, framed.
