John Wood (British, 1801-1870). Student at RA schools, gold medallist 1825. The Last Interview of Paul and Virginia, signed l.r., oil on canvas, a poignant depiction of a Jack Tar type character bidding farewell to his sweetheart, c. 1820, 26cm by 26cm, gilt frame, remnants of artist’s label at verso, some craquelure Notes: John Wood studied at Sass's and the Royal Academy schools, where in 1825 he gained the gold medal for painting. According to a Christie's sale catalogue of 16 February 1872, Wood as a student at the RA 'obtained the notice of Fuseli and Sir Thomas Lawrence, and under the auspices of the latter he commenced his career in art'. He won the competition for the altarpiece of St James's, Bermondsey [The Ascension] 1844, and was commissioned by Earl de Grey to paint the ceiling panels in Wrest Park, Bedfordshire. His work is represented in the National Portrait Gallery, Sir John Soane’s Museum and the V&A. FRANÇOIS ÉMILE POPINEAU (1887-1951), AN ART DECO BRONZED TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A BATHING FEMALE NUDE FRENCH, CIRCA 1925 Signed E. Popineau to cast 49.5cm high François Émile Popineau (1887-1951) was a member of the artist group 'La Stele' that was founded in the 1920s by the Éditeur d'Art, Arthur Goldscheider. Popineau received a number of commissions for national war memorials, before developing a specialty in the study of female sculpture and fountain decoration - most notably in Bourges and Bagnères-de-Bigorre. He was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1935 and the Prix Puvis de Chavannes for 'La Baigneuse' in 1937. Very Rare WW1 Imperial Russian Participants in the British Flag Day 1916 Medal. Sterling Silver Gilt and Enamelled. The assay mark Anchor is for Birmingham. The Lion Passant for Sterling Silver, the makers marks HSW&B and the date letter R for 1916. There is an Imperial Eagle with an enamelled centre bearing the initial A- for the Imperial Tsarina Alexandra Fedorovna. Complete with original back pin for fastening to uniform, plus top wearing pin and ribbon white/blue/red- as Russian flag. This award has not been awarded. It hasn't been engraved. In good condition commensurate with the age of the medal. Please note there is damage to the enamel and there is fraying to the ribbon. The medal comes in its original box.
