An Ethiopian devotional, 19th century Chip-carved and with a hollow toggle atop for affixing to a necklace or belt, with a door on both sides opening to painted images of figures including the Virgin Mary, Christ and St George slaying the dragon, some words hand-written in Geez and with a paper-label attached to the underside which reads indistinctly ‘A charm taken from her neck by an Abyssinian girl and given to Captain Lambard during the campaign of 1868’, 7.5cm x 9.5cm. This refers to the British punitive expedition of 1867/68 to Abyssinia to rescue captive missionaries held by the emperor Theodore (Tewodros) II by a combined British and Indian army under the command of General Sir Robert Napier. Captain Lambard of the 45th Foot is recorded as having been present at the siege of Magdala for which he was awarded the Abyssinan campaign medal. It was at this battle that the emperor, realising he had lost the day, shot himself with a pistol that had been presented to him by Queen Victoria
A WW2 General Service Medal awarded to Sgt. Francis Murray Greaves (-1942), a wireless operator, number 1259996 with RAFVR (34 Squadron) crashed in a Blenheim Z7943 near Ranchi, India and was murdered by local inhabitants on 30th August 1942 and buried at Ranchi War Cemetery, together with a log book 19th May 1941 - until the time of his death (log book ends 'Death presumed 30.8.42') and three photographs
A Saint George Medal for Bravery, 4th Class, Russian, circa 1917, Nicholas II, in silver, impressed "No.1142324" on the reverse. Note: This medal was awarded to Jacob Korschunow, a 'White Russian' who fled from the 'Reds' prior to W.W.2 and settled with his wife in Watenstedt, Germany, where he gained employment with the German army as a motor mechanic. After W.W.2 he fulfilled the same role with the occupying U.S. army.
