Group mounted as originally worn. ... Accompanied by a postcard photograph of the 3rd London’s ... Service papers. ... News paper cutting, referring to the “Fighting Fusiliers” at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. Sergeant William Wallace Hawes enlisted into the 3rd Bn London Regiment on the 1st April 1908, he posted with his Regiment to Malta on the 5th September 1914 and was then sent to France on the 5th January 1915. At the end of the term of engagement he was discharged on the 31st March 1916 and returned to the UK where he volunteered for service with the 18th Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps. He later returned to the 3rd London’s with the rank of WO II. He was awarded the TFEM on the 1st April 1914 and the clasp in 1928.

This medal of the Order of the British Empire was awarded to Roland Basset Paine, for his services in the HMV factory during WW1 when it was used as a munition factory. Comprising: OBE in original leather case and retaining original typed named paper envelope. .... June 1918 HMV booklet giving details of the award. .... Family WW2 Medal group comprising: 1939/45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. Medals loose complete with forwarding box (poor condition) addressed to Mr E Paine of Hayes Middlesex. Mr Roland Basset Paine was awarded the Medal of the Order of the British Empire in 1918 the accompanying booklet states that he joined the HMV Company in 1912 as a wood working machinist. During WW1 the HMV Hayes factory was used for munition work and in 1916 was involved in an accident which severely damaged his hand. Despite his injury he returned to work as quickly as possible resuming his place in what the booklet describes as working on the most dangerous machine in the factory. It is believed that Mr E. Paine served with the Royal Navy during WW2

Leadbetter 54th Div M.G.Bn. He has shown ability and devotion to duty on all occasions. He has been with his unit in all actions, since and including the first Battle of Gaza, and in every case he has done very good work as a section Sergeant. His powers of leadership and coolness in action have always been of the highest order. The 161st Machine Gun Company ( 161st Brigade, 54 th Division) was formed in Egypt during April 1916, on 19th April 1918, the Company became part of the 54th Machine Gun Battalion. #11;#11;

Awarded to Second Lieutenant George Henry Potts of the “Salford Pals” who won the Military Cross on the 4th November 1918 at the Oise-Sambre Canal action, where his Commanding Officer Lt. Col. John Nievill Marshall and Sergeant James Clarke of the 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers both won the Victoria Cross. Comprising: Military Cross, 1914/15 Star, “17607 L.CPL G.H. POTTS LAN FUS”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “2 Lieut.”. Medals polished GC. The announcement of the award of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 2nd April 1919. “#11;“During the attack on the Oise-Sambre Canal on the 4th November 1918, he was one of the first to attempt to make the crossing under heavy fire, of the bridge constructed by the R.E’s. When the advance was continued on the enemy side of the canal. he led his Company with great skill and courage, capturing all his objectives”#11;Second Lieutenant George Henry Potts from Pendlebury Salford, volunteered into the 19th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers. He landed in France on the 23rd November 1915 and was commissioned on the 25th June 1918

95th (Derbyshire) Regiment Casualty Crimea War Pair of Medals. Awarded to 2950 Private Joseph Harris who died on the 30th September 1854. Comprising: Crimea Medal two clasps “Alma”, “Sebastopol”, “JOSEPH HARRIS 95TH REGT” (Impressed), Turckish Crimea Medal (British issue). Medals loose. Private Joseph Harris was mobilised with his Regiment for the Crimea and embarked on SS Medway on the 6th April 1854, landing Scutari on the 24th April. Serving with the Light Company, he was present at the Alma and the advance to Sebastapol. On the 26th September the Russians attacked the British Second Division positions and the Light Company of the 95th led the counter attack. Private Harris fell ill with cholera and died on the 30th September. Medal and clasp entitlement confirmed.

2nd Bn Derbyshire Regiment Victorian Meritorious Service Medal. A Victorian example awarded to “CLR SERJT G. HODGKINSON 2ND DERBY REGT”. Colour Sergeant George Hodgkinson was born in 1852 and was educated at the School of the Patriotic Fund, his father having died in service with the 95th. In 1866 at the age of 14 he enlisted a Drummer Boy, following the footsteps of his brother. He saw service in Gibraltar and in Egypt during 1882, earning the medal and Star. He was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1884 and was discharged after 21 years service in 1887. Nominated for the award of the Meritorious Service Medal, this was granted in 1902.

59th Foot (2nd Notts.) Drummer’s Afghanistan War Medal. Awarded to “596 DRUM J SULLIVAN 59 FOOT” Drummer John Sullivan was born in Aldershot camp and at the age of 13 enlisted into the 59th Foot whilst the Regiment was serving in India. He remained in India with the Regiment until 1880 and is confirmed as seeing service during the Afghanistan campaign. Returning to the UK he was discharged in 1886. He papers show he maybe entitled to the clasp “Ahmed Khel”

Private Dean Houghton enlisted in 1891 and is confirmed on the medal roll with the additional note invalided to England. He was discharged on return to England as unfit for further service.

Royal Navy Casualty HMS Philomel Africa General Service Medal, clasp “Somaliland 1908-10” Awarded to “311306 J. TAW STO 1CL H.M.S. PHILOMEL”, who was killed during the Great War in 1915. Stoker Jeremiah Taw a native Portsea Hampshire enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1907 he is confirmed as serving onboard HMS Proserpine a third class cruiser from February 1908 to July 1909. At the outbreak of the Great War he was serving onboard HMS Warrior, after a short period on shore establishment he sailed for operations at Gallipoli, he was reported slightly wounded during these operations. On the 19th November 1915 he was serving onboard HMS Scourge a Beagle-class destroyer, he was Killed following a boiler explosion and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

After returning for home service he remained with the Regiment and in 1871 was serving at Preston.

WW1 1st King George’s Own Sappers & Miners Indian Distinguished Service Medal A George V Kaiser-I-Hind example awarded to “JEMADAR GUUAR SINGH 1ST K.G.O. S & M”. The 1st K.G.O. Sappers & Minors landed in France in 1914 and saw action at Ypres, Loos and after heavy casualties was withdrawn from the Western Front in 1915. Transferred to Mesopotamia it was in this theatre of operations that Jemadar Guuar Singh was awarded the IDSM for bravery and distinguished conduct. The Sappers were again withdrawn and fought along the Tigris to Baghdad and then Palestine in 1918.

Private T Denton is confirmed on the medal roll for the GSM Palestine as serving with the 2nd Bn. He is also confirmed as POW, but when captured serving with the Royal Engineers.

Victorian Coatbridge Volunteers (7th Lanarkshire RV) Gold Shooting Medal. A fine quality example, the obverse decorated with an enamel Royal Coat of Arms, crossed rifles and unit title. The reverse with engraved inscription “PRESENTED BY MATTHEW M. HENDERSON ESQ JEWELLER TO A & E COYS FOR COMPETITIVE COMPETITION “. It also lists the winners from 1889 to 1896. Stamped “9ct” and makers stamp D.F.T (David F. Turnbull of Glasgow). GC. Height 6.5cm The Jeweller David F. Turnbull of Sydney Court Argyle Street, Glasgow was found dying in his shop under mysterious circumstances in 1912

Private Wrighton is shown on the QSA Medal Roll as entitled to Five clasps, not the clasp Cape Colony. He was also awarded the King’s South Africa Medal.

Private Thomas Henderson is confirmed on the Waterloo Medal Roll serving in Colonel The Hon. Alexander Abercromby’s Company of the 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards. This Battalion was ordered by Wellington to defend Hougoumont Farm, a task they completed along with the 2nd Bn 3rd Foot Guards.

69th (South Lincolnshire) Foot Waterloo Medal. Awarded to “***JAMES GLIN 2ND BN 69TH REG FOOT***”. Retaining original steel clip and ring. No record has been found of a Private James Glin on the waterloo roll however, however a letter from the Welch Regimental Museum dated 1981 indicates that the surname maybe misspelt on the medal or records and was in fact awarded to a Private James Gleen who’s name appears on the Regimental Casualty Roll for the Waterloo campaign. The 2nd / 69th were heavly engaged at Quarte Bras were they were caught by French cavalry when deployed in line not square. The Battalion saw action at Waterloo.

1st Regiment of Life Guards Waterloo Medal. Awarded “*THOMAS RUTHERFORD 1ST REGIMENT LIFE GUARDS.” Retaining original steel clip. ... Accompanied by a small quantity of research. Trooper Thomas Rutherford was a native of Pansha, near Sunderland, he joined the First Regiment of Life Guards on the 10th December 1811 and proceeded to the Peninsula, seeing action at the Battle of Vittoria, he served with the Regiment during the campaign in the Netherlands and France and is confirmed as being present at the Battle of Waterloo. He the Regiment saw a great deal of action during the Battle. Remaining with the Regiment and appears to have died of consumption whilst serving in 1830 at Greenock. He had served 18 years and 254 days as a Trooper with the Regiment and was granted 2 years service for his services at Waterloo. He would have been entitled to a Military General Service Medal, but died before issue.

7th (or Queen’s Own) Regiment of Hussars Waterloo Medal. Awarded to “*JOSEPH REDFERN 7TH REGIMENT HUSSARS***” A good example, now fitted with straight bar ribbon suspension. Confirmed on the Waterloo Medal Roll. On the eve of the Battle of Waterloo the 7th were honoured by Uxbridge by being given the charge on the advancing enemy, the French 2nd regiment of lancers in the action at Genappe. After a spirited and fearless succession of charges only nineteen of the 120 men of the 7th Hussar squadron were left in the saddle. At the Battle of Waterloo itself, the 7th were on the extreme right of the allied line, 300 yards north of the Chateau of Hougoumont. Until 5pm they were not used, but then they charged more than twelve times. Standish O'Grady, 2nd Viscount Guillamore, then a lieutenant in the 7th Hussars mentions is a letter to his father

10th Royal Regiment of Hussars Waterloo Medal Awarded to “**THOMAS STOPFORD 10TH ROYAL REG HUSSARS **” Polished fitted with replacement ring. Private Thomas Stopford is confirmed on the Waterloo Medal Roll as serving in Captain Charles Wood’s Troop. On the 17th June Wood’s Troop was one of the first to discover the retreat of the Prussians from Ligny, and Captain Wood immediately reported this circumstance to the Duke of Wellington. He was severely wounded at the head of his troop on the 18th at Waterloo. Private Stopford a native of Manchester joined the 10th Hussars in 1813, following the Battle of Waterloo he remained with the Regiment and was promoted to the rank of Corporal a rank he only held for less than 1 year when he was reduced to the ranks. He was once again promoted Corporal in 1824 and Sergeant in 1826. However 9 months later he was once more reduced to the ranks and remained a Private until his discharge at his own request in 1836.#11;

3rd Bn Grenadier Guards Waterloo Medal. A contemporary renamed example worn by *SAMUEL BROWN 3RD BATT GRENAD GUARDS **”. Polished old pawn brokers mark. Private Samuel Brown is confirmed on the Waterloo Medal Roll, having served in Lieutenant Colonel Miller’s Company. During the battle he was reported as slightly wounded in the left leg. A native of Arnold Nottinghamshire with the trade of Stocking weaver he enlisted into the Grenadier Guards in 1805 and saw service during the Peninsula Campaign seeing action Corunna, earning the clasp to the MGS. He later saw service with the 7th Veteran Battalion and died on the 18th August 1864.

2nd Royal North British Dragoons Scots Greys Waterloo Medal. Awarded to “SERJEANT JOHN GILLES 2ND OR R. N. BRIT REG DRAG” Please note that the medal has been polished, including the edge, there is also evidence at the 6 o’clock position of a neat plug, which would indicate once broached, this would explain the polishing and slight loss of naming to the edge. Sergeant later Sergeant Major John Gilles enlisted in February 1793, The same year he was slightly wounded whilst serving with the Regiment in Flanders. At the Battle of Waterloo with the rank of Serjeant a rank he had held since 1810, the Dragoons formed part of the Union Brigade. The Regiment was to distinguish itself when one of his fellow Sergeants, Sergeant Charles Ewart would charge forward and capture the Imperial Eagle of the French 45th Regiment of the Line. After the battle the regiment formed part of the occupation force at Paris and in October Gilles was appointed Sergeant Major. He was discharged as unfit for further service in May 1817.

2nd Bn Grenadier Guards Waterloo Casulty Medal. Awarded to “*** JOHN JACOBS 2ND BATT GRENAD GUARDS ***”. who is listed as woulded at the Battle of Waterloo. Polished some edge knocks, fitted with a replacement steel clip and ring mount. Private John Jacobs served at Waterloo under Lieutenant Colonel F. D’Oyly and was listed as slightly wounded to the back and right arm. A native of Somerset he had served with the 2nd Somerset Milita before enlisting into the Grenadier Guards. After the battle he remained with the regiment until his time expired on the 7th December 1820.

Hanoverian Landwehr Battalion Lueneburg Waterloo Medal. Awarded to “SOLDAT JOHANN MEYER LANDWEHR BATT LUENEBURG”. Minor edge knocks Hanoverian Landwehr Battalion Hameln was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel de Ramdohr . It was part of the 4th Hanoverian Brigade, which was part of the 6th British Infantry Division under the command of Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Picton

2nd Battalion 95th Rifles Waterloo Medal. This is a name erased example, the edge retains the following information “** 2ND BATT 95TH REGT FOOT”. Retaining original steep clip and ring. The vendor believes to be the medal of Private Henry Russell, who’s name appears on the Waterloo Medal Roll serving in Captain J. G. Mccollough's Company.
