Dreadnought, and H.M.S. MagnificentNote: Vice-Admiral Kenneth Dewar, C.B.E. (21st September 1879 – 8th September 1964), was an officer of the Royal Navy. First specialising as a gunnery officer, he became a staff officer and ‘controversial student of naval tactics’, going on to see extensive service during WWI.This included the Dardanelles Campaign, where he commanded a monitor in home waters before serving the Admiralty for over four years. After the war, he became entangled in the controversy surrounding the consequences of the Battle of Jutland, though despite this, held a number of commands during the 20s.In 1928, he was at the very heart of the infamous ‘Royal Oak Mutiny’, when as a captain of the battleship Royal Oak, he sent his executive officer’s letter of complaint to higher command, this regarding their immediate superior, Rear-Admiral Collard. This came after a series of incidents onboard. All three were ordered back to Britain, with Dewar and his EO requesting courts-martial so that they could defend themselves. Their trials were held in Gibraltar and attracted widespread media.Dewar, though found partly guilty, survived with severe reprimand. His EO was found guilty and resigned, whilst Collard was compelled to resign his commission for provocation.Having then commanded the two oldest capital ships in the fleet, Dewar retired on promotion to Rear-Admiral. His 1939 memoirs were a strong indictment of the Navy’s practices.Dewar was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire on 17th October 1919 ‘for valuable services at the Peace Conference, Paris’, the award forming part of this most important groups.

The ship was sent to the Med Fleet in 1919 and took part in Black Sea operations to support the White against the Red Bolsheviks. Wells would have been on board when she used her ig 13.5inch guns to bombard Bolshevik troops and disrupt supplies outside of Theodosia. Lot 109

A WW2 German Iron Cross 1st class, with normal 3 part construction of an iron core sandwiched between 2 silvered frames. Coke bottle shaped pin to the reverse side, which is stamped with the number 26, indicating it was manufactured by B.H.Mayers Kunstpragesanstalt, Pforzheim. Approximately 4.5cm width. Condition: missing its C clasp to the reverse side. The clasp has broken away, leaving only a stump of metal. The painted core has worn away a little in places, revealing the darkened iron core beneath. Good overall shape and patina to the medal.

Lot 197

A WW2 medal group, later ‘Restoration of Peace’ medal, WW2 era pay book, photographs, and an account of the WW2 experience of 2376205 Cpl Les Beagan of the Royal Signal Corps from June 1942 through to September 1943. To include: the 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, 1939-45 War Medal, after market / unofficial 1995 Restoration of Peace Medal, Les’ original pay book dating from 1941, 2 x WW2 era photographs showing Les and his fellow soldiers, a later photograph of Les wearing a set of miniature medals, and a soft cover pamphlet detailing his wartime journey to Babylon. Notes: little is known about Leslie’s official service, but the pamphlet he wrote gives some interesting insight into soldiering at the time, and his observation during his service in foreign countries. Condition: generally good. The medals are mounted for wear, and show normal age and service wear. The photos, pay book and pamphlet all remain in good condition.

Lot 40

A 1915 Star trio, awarded to 23340 Pte D. Ham of the 3rd Hussars. To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, and a later 3rd Kings Own Hussars cap badge with slider to the reverse. As per the WW2 issued crosses, the cross is of 3 part construction, with a central iron core, sandwiched between 2 silvered frames. The suspension ring is marked in the wartime style with a number 4 denoting the maker. The medal is complete with an original ribbon. Condition: almost mint. The painted iron core is good, and the silvered frame has its original factory polishing. There is some tarnish to one side of the frame, but this will clean if desired. The ribbon is little creased from wear, but is nevertheless clean. The card LDO box is also in very good condition.

Lot 38

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to 8350 Pte William H. Thompson of the 2/Border Regiment. To included: the 1914 Star with likely later slip on Mons clasp, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. Notes: Pte Thompson’s medal index card also states that he served with the 2/1 Denbighshire Yeomanry, and the South Wales Borderers. Importantly, the MIC (or any other document) does not confirm his entitlement to the clasp. The slip on clasp has some age, but is likely not of the same period as the medal. Swing mounted on a bar for wear. Condition: generally good. Age related toning to each of the medals. The ribbons are original, but have age related soiling and wear.

Lot 49

A 1914 Star trio, awarded to S-6071 Pte George Henry Downey of the Army Ordnance Corps. To include: a 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: Pte Downey also served with the 3rd East Lancashire Regiment, using the service number 51505. George first entered the conflict on November 3rd 1914. He was a native of St Margaret’s, near Plumstead in Kent. His attestation papers state that he was 18 years and 2 months old upon joining the colours on November 7th 1907, and that he’d already seen service with the 3rd Kent Artillery Volunteers. The casualty form in his service papers state that he was admitted to hospital on July 19th 1915 for Shell Shock while serving in Gallipoli. He later went on to be admitted to hospital for Bronchitis twice, and for Enteric Fever, both while serving in Malta. Condition: generally good. Some minor signs of polishing to the medals, plus light contact marks from normal wear. Each of the ribbons is a later replacement.

Lot 62

A WW1 1915 Star trio, awarded to a Captain Michael Jordon of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. Notes: Captain Jordon initially enlisted as a Private in the Army Service Corps, with the service number M2-077707. He first disembarked for service in France on May 2nd 1915. The 1915 Star is officially impressed with his original name and service number, but for reasons unknown, the Corps have almost entirely erased. You can just faintly see the A and C of ASC. Interestingly, his return address on his MIC is in Wellington, New Zealand. Condition: generally very good. Minor toning to each medal, and limited signs of wear. The medals are loosely mounted on a card backing for display. The ribbons would appear to be original to the era.

Lot 41

A WW1 1914 Star and ‘Mons’ clasp trio, awarded to 7583 Pte F. Apling of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment, and the Military Foot Police. To include: the 1914 Star with clasp (the clasp is of later production date and appears to be glued on to the ribbon), the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: Pte Apling first disembarked for service on October 6th 1914. His medal index card notes that he served with the Military Police as a Lance Corporal, using the service number P3840. The award of the clasp for the 1914 Star is confirmed on the roll. He would appear to have been Court-Martialled on January 1st 1918. The trio is confirmed as his full entitlement. Condition: Generally good. The BWM has a small patch of black corrosion to the obverse, but this may be able to be cleaned off. The other 2 medals have toned with age. Each medal is complete with later replacement ribbons.

Lot 63

A WW1 1914 Star/ WW2 / Special Constabulary medal group, awarded to 2. Lt George Herbert Ellis of the 11th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Defence Medal, and the Special Constabulary Long Service Medal. There are also 2 period badges to represent to the regiments he served in. Notes: George was a native of Alveston, Warwickshire, and first attested for service in 1908 aged 18 years old. His occupation was listed as carpenter when he joined the Royal Engineers using the service number 17059. He served both at home overseas, and was posted to South Africa in 1912. He went to France as part of the BEF on August 18th 1914. He received his commission in the 11th Battalion Hampshire regiment on December 30th 1916. His Defence Medal is unnamed as issued, and his Special Constabulary Medal is named to George H Ellis. The 1914 Star is named to ‘G.Ellis’. His medal index card confirms that he is not entitled to the clasp for the star. Condition: good. The medals have been polished in the past, but there is limited wear to the detail. The group is loosely mounted on a card backing, using what appears to be the original ribbons.

Lot 98

A WW2 British casualty medal group, box of issue, and condolence slip, awarded to Pte J.S. Lawton. To include: the 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, 1939-45 War Medal, slip named to ‘Pte J.S.Lawton’ and the original card box of issue. Notes: it’s unclear which regiment or corps Pte Lawson served with. It may possibly be a 13069802 Pte John Lawton of the Pioneer Corps, who died aged 24 on May 4th 1941, and is commemorated in the Rycroft Cemetery in Walsall. The address on the box is also a Walsall address, hence the attribution. Condition: generally good, apart from a little verdigris to the left hand side of the Burma Star (it may possible to polish this off).

Lot 8

A WW1 1915 Star casualty trio, awarded to 17840 Cpl Donald Paterson of the 10th Battalion (Cameronians) Scottish Rifles. To include: the 1915 Star, which appears to have been gilded, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: Donald Paterson was a native of Barony, Glasgow, and was killed in action on January 27th 1916. He first entered the conflict in France on October 12th 1915. He is commemorated at the Loos Memorial, at Pas de Calais. A Pension Ledgers Index erroneously puts his date of death at October 12th 1915, but every other period document gives the date as 27/01/1916. Condition: good. The medals are loosely mounted on a card backing, using replacement ribbons. The back of the Star has some speckling where the base metal is showing through, but is otherwise in good condition: Normal aged related toning to the BWM and Victory medal.

Lot 366

A 1980's British Army survival knife, complete with canvas sheath and frog. Marked with a broad arrow and dated 1984, with a serial number of 1278214. Approximately 34.5cm length in sheath. Condition: generally good to most pieces. Some oxidisation to the 1937 Edelweiss medal, but otherwise good clean condition to the other items.

Lot 297

A mixed selection of WW1 and WW2 era badges and medals. To include: a WW1 9ct gold and tortoiseshell sweetheart brooch for the Royal Engineers (marked 9ct), a WW1 Victory Medal, named to R-5130 Clarence A.Harris of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, a WW1 Officer’s bronze Royal Flying Corps collar badge, a WW1 Officer’s bronze Army Service Corps cap badge, a gilt metal Royal Engineers sweetheart brooch, a scarce WW2 / 1940’s Faulkners Ltd, a pre-1953 Parachute Regiment cap badge on slider, a gilt metal and enamel ‘Zeppelins Luftschiff’ badge, a WW1 era 1917 hallmarked identity fob, named to Dvr 141384 E.E.Bignold Royal Engineers, a white metal George VI coronation medallion, a gilt metal and enamel swastika pendant, and a metal Soviet Russian Hammer & Sickle motif. 12 items. Condition: generally good. A little wear in places, tiny chip to enamel on swastika, plus a tiny amount of surface scratching / flea bites to the Zeppelin badge.

Lot 4

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to 3-2573 Sjt W.Vaughan of the 1st Hampshire Regiment. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Each medal has a short length of original ribbon. Notes: Sergeant Vaughan first entered the conflict on November 12th 1914, and he later served with Machine Gun Corps using service number 73571. His medal index card also refers to him as being ‘William Charles E Vaughan’. He originally enlisted for service on July 2nd 1909, and was discharged on November 18th 1918. Sjt Vaughan is also entitled to the Silver War Badge, but there is no apparent entitlement to the clasp for the star. Condition: some wear through polishing. The detail has softened to the high points, but the medals are otherwise good. The ribbons are a little worn in places.

Lot 97

Collection of European Medals, including Italian East Africa Campaign Medal (Pre WW2),  Belgium Civil long service medal, Belgium order of the crown, Polish Military order, US Military Good Conduct medal, German WW1 medal, Russian Patriotic War medal,

Lot 1

A WW1 1914 Star / WW2 Territorial Force Efficiency Medal group. Awarded to 20028 Pte Edward George Pinckney (erroneously referred to as ‘G.E. Pinckney on the WW1 trio) of the RAMC. To include: the 1914 Star with Mons clasp, British War Medal, Victory Mesal, George V issue Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, WW2 Defence Medal, and a WW2 issued Imperial Service Medal. Notes: the Medal Index Card for Pte Pinckney confirms his clasp for the 1914 Star. He first disembarked for service on August 24th 1914. Both his WW1 medals and his MIC wrongly refer to him as G E Pinckney, when it should more correctly be E G Pinckney (this is confirmed by a Pension Ledger index card, and also states his service number as 20028). His TFEM is named to E G Pinckney, with the service number 940. The Defence Medal is unnamed as issued, and the Imperial Service Medal is named to Edward George Pinckney. The Imperial Service Medal is gazetted on January 12th 1943, and states that he is a ‘skilled workman, class II, London Telecommunications Region’. Condition: good. Some wear from polishing to the WW1 trio and TFEM. Both the Defence Medal and Imperial Service Medal are good. The ribbons on each medal would appear to be original, and they are each loosely mounted on a card backing.

Lot 31

A WW1 1914 Star trio, and cap badge, awarded to 7112 L.Cpl A. Edwards of the 2nd Essex Regiment. To include: a 1914 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, and a later produced bi-metal Essex Regiment cap badge. Notes: Pte Edwards first entered the conflict on August 22nd 1914. The trio is confirmed as his full entitlement, with no evidence of his being entitled to the clasp for the star. Condition: generally good. The medals are loosely mounted, using their original ribbons, onto a card backing. The medal have normal age related toning, but don’t appear to have been over polished. The cap badge is good, but this is likely of much later production.

Lot 99

A WW1 officer’s 1914 Star with ‘Mons’ clasp, Prisoner of War medal trio, a portrait of the officer while in captivity, and other associated items. To include: a 1914 Star with original sewn on Mons clasp, British War Medal, each named to Captain Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe (1888-1948), of the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). Also included is a framed head & shoulders oil portrait of Captain Drury-Lowe, painted in 1917 while a P.O.W. In the Schwarmstedt camp, in Lower Saxony. The portrait is named, dated and has the artists name of ‘G.G.Jackson’ signed at the edge. G.G Jackson was almost certainly a fellow officer prisoner, and only person carries that name who was a prisoner at the time the portrait was made; Captain G.G.Jackson of the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Other items included in the lot include a WW1 era compass by Newton & Co of London, 2 1935 silver jubilee medals, a 1937 Edward VIII coronation medal, a Royal Navy bullion blazer badge, a 1904 dated (written in French) to ‘Monsieur Drury Lowe’ from the Royal College of Art, and a 1951 dated Engineers Certificate of Competency, and a framed baptismal certificate for Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe, and dated November 22nd 1888 (confirmed 1905). Notes: Capt Drury-Lowe’s medal index card confirms that the 1914 trio and clasp was his full medal entitlement. It would appear that he was also entitled to the Silver War Badge. He first entered the conflict on September 20th 1914, and according to published records by Cox & Co, he was reported as missing on October 20th 1914. He was confirmed as interned on February 6th 1918, and was repatriated on November 18th 1918. The Cox & Co records erroneously refer to him as ‘Capt W.Drury-Lowe’ of the Notts & Derby Regiment, but this must be this officer as there not another Drury-Lowe listed. Information supplied by the vendor suggests that the oil portrait was painted on the back of biscuit tin, and it was certainly framed in Germany judging by the label on the back panel. His medal index card also refers to the ‘Exonerated Officers List’, which clearly references his time as a POW, and the subsequent questions he would have been required to answer to army command upon his repatriation. Attestation papers suggest he first enlisted for service wit the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters in March 1908. Unusually, the mounting bar for the medals is marked for Spink & Son of London, but whether they just supplied the bar or mounted the medals is unknown. Condition: generally very good. The medals are swing mounted (with original ribbons) on a bar for wear, with a fine colour and patina to each. The portrait is generally good, with just a little chipping to the frame in places.

Lot 12

A WW1 1915 Star trio, awarded to Pte Wilfred Johnson of the 1st Coldstream Guards. To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Each medal is fitted with a later replacement ribbon. Notes: Pte Johnson first entered the conflict in France, on August 15th 1915. His medal index card confirms the trio as his full entitlement. Condition: generally good. Some contact marks, and wear from polishing, but otherwise good.

Lot 50

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to Pte, later Cpl Edwin Smith of the 3rd Dragoon Guards. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. Notes: Pte Smith first disembarked for service on October 20th 1914. His medal index card also reveals that served with the Labour Corps using the service number 612613. It’s confirmed that he is not entitled to the clasp for the star. Condition: very good. Some age related toning to the medals, plus some signs of polishing. Each medal is complete with their original ribbons.

Lot 36

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to 1659 Pte Andrew Sellar of the 1/6 Gordon Highlanders. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: Pte Sellar first disembarked for service on November 10th 1914. His medal index card confirm the trio as his full entitlement, and there is no evidence of him being entitled to the clasp for the star. He also served with the Gordons using the service number 265441. His pension ledger index card states that he was a native of Keith, Banff, Scotland. Condition: generally good. The medals have been court mounted, using the original ribbons, with pin and C clasp to the reverse. Each medal has also been stitched into place, making it difficult to see the entirety of the backs. They've been highly polished at some point in the past, but there is still a good level of detail present.

There is no evidence of a clasp being claimed or awarded. Condition: generally good. The medals are loosely mounted on to a backing card, using the original ribbons for the star and victory medal (the BWM is a later replacement). The medals do not appear to have been over polished, and just have a normal level of age related toning.

Lot 100

An emotive WW2 Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve casualty medal group, photograph album, other loose portrait photographs, and associated paperwork, for 151228 Flying Officer Leslie Sumner of 460 Squadron (Royal Australian Air Force). To include: a 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal, and 1939-45 War Medal (with transit box addressed to his wife). Plus, a WW2 era snap shot photograph album showing many images from FO Sumner’s training in Canada. There are also numerous loose photographs, which include his wedding photographs, group shots of fellow officers, views from inside the cockpit, an image of his temporary headstone etc (only a small selection of these are shown in the images). Letters and newspapers clippings are also included in the lot. Notes: the medal group and archive has been consigned a friend and work colleague of FO Sumner’s widow, Constance Mary Sumner, who bequeathed the items to the consignee many years ago. Mary Sumner, as she was known to friends, never remarried after death of her husband, and she died aged 83 in 2001. Leslie Sumner was born in 1914, and was a chartered accountant in Manchester before WW2. He volunteered to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and was subsequently sent to Canada for his training (as pictured in the photograph album). Anecdotal evidence suggests that he could have served in a ground based office position (based on his civilian employment), but chose to volunteer for flight training. Leslie wanted to fight for his country and hoped that any children he had in the future would be proud of him. A harrowing letter, sent by the Air Ministry to his widow nearly 2 years after conclusion of WW2, details what they knew regarding the circumstances of the crash. While serving as a Navigator on a Lancaster MK1, Serial No.ME740, his aircraft came down near Marigny-le-Grand, on May 4th 1944. Seemingly, an eye witness account described how the aircraft came down from a great height, and hit the ground with a large explosion. Such was the disintegration of the plane, that only 2 bodies could be recovered for burial, and the plane itself could only be identified from the serial number on the fuselage. The letter hoped that it would be some ‘slight consolation to know that death must have been instantaneous’. It’s known that Leslie’s Lancaster took off on May 3rd from Binbrook, to bomb a military camp. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter minutes after making its bombing run. Leslie is commemorated along side his fellow flight crew, in a collective grave in the Marigny-le-Grand churchyard, France. Condition: generally very good. Understandably, the medals appear to be unworn, with a good and patina from the minting process. 3 of the 4 medals are in their original paper wrappers. The photographs and paper ephemera show normal age related wear, which may include fading, some tearing or foxing.

Lot 81

Normal age and service related wear to the item, plus many of the cloth patches appear to be uniform removed.

Lot 57

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to 2658 Pte James C Wilson of the 9th Highland Light Infantry. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: Pte Wilson first disembarked for service on November 5th 1914. He also used the service number 330673 while serving with the regiment. There is no evidence to suggest he was entitled to the clasp for the store. Condition: generally good. The medals have been swing mounted for wear, using original ribbons, and with a pin and C clasp to the reverse. The medals are heavily toned with age, but retain a good level of detail.

Lot 93

A WW1 medal pair, bronze cap badge, autograph book, and period photographs, relating to 266153 Pte Ernest George Ewens of the Hertfordshire Regiment, and later the Bedfordshire Regiment. To include: the British War Medal, Victory Medal, period bronze Herts Regiment cap badge on slider, a WW1 era autograph book, containing poems, illustrations and greetings from various soldiers, and various WW1 period photographs of Pte Ewens in uniform. Notes: Pte Ewens’ medal entitlement is confirmed as being the pair only. Contemporary records would suggest that he was part of the territorial force. in the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment. A couple of the photographs included would indicate that he was a music9na in the regiment, as in one image he is pictured holding a trumpet, and another shows him holding a bugle. Another image shows a group of drummers, but it’s uncertain whether Pte Ewens is in this image. Information supplied by the vendor states that Ernest was born in Wood Green, on November 23rd 1897. He enlisted just before his 17th birthday, in 1914, and spent 2 years serving with a Home Service (TF) unit. After attaining the required age, Ernest was sent overseas for service in France & Flanders. He joined the regimental brass band, which managed to excuse him from some of the dreary trench duties. The autograph book is named and dated November 23rd 1914, seemingly a birthday present from his parents. It contains amusing rhymes and poems, written by fellow soldiers, plus some illustrations of camps, particularly from the 30th Company Grenadier Guards. Condition: generally good. Both are in good clean condition, with a good level of detail still present. The medals are both complete with their original ribbons, but these are a little frayed. The photograph are all good, as is the cap badge. The autograph book has a couple of loose pages, but is otherwise good.

Mahronda sank in 1942. Various other service books and paperwork are included, and some WW2 and later photographs of Captain Hill. Captain Hill successfully negotiated Mediterranean waters to deliver ammunition to Malta in June 1940. The award of his Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal are confirmed on official rolls. Condition: generally very good. The medals are all good, with the gilt finish to the O.B.E being intact, and just a little fading to the ribbons. There is a little verdigris to the 1939-45 star. The paper ephemera shows normal wear for documents of their age, but all documents are clear and readable.

The handle is inked with the name ‘E S H Johnson European War 1914’ The bamboo shaft is profusely marked with the names of locations where Ernest would have visited or been stationed during the conflict. These appear to have been scratched in the wood and then filled in with ink. Among the many place names mentioned are, Southampton (where he departed from), St Nazaire, Agincourt, Amiens, Dunkirk, Dieppe, Bethune, Ypres, and many others. At the top of the shaft is ‘H.A.C. 1st Batt’ For the Honourable Artillery Company 1st Battalion, A.O.D for the Army Ordnance Corps, and ‘B.E.F for the British Expeditionary Force. A 1914 Star trio, and bi-metal cap badged, awarded to 3605 Pte Harold Frost of the 2nd Notts & Derby Regiment (Notts & Derby Regiment). To include: the 1914 Star, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, and a later Notts & Derby Regiment cap badge. Notes: Pte Frost also served with the South Staffordshire Regiment, using the service number 21685. Harold first disembarked for service on November 11th 1914. The trio is confirmed as his full entitlement, and there would appear to be no entitlement to the clasp for the star. Condition: generally good. The medals have been cleaned in the past, and still are quite bright, and show some abrasive polishing marks.

Lot 21

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded to 6422 Pte Patrick Swan of the 1st Northamptonshire Regiment. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was discharged in March 1919 at the age of 41. Patrick is also entitled to the Silver War Badge, number B175327. He does not appear to be entitled to the clasp for the star. Condition: good. Age relate toning, but very limited wear from polishing.

Lot 58

A WW1 1915 Star trio, and WW2 Defence Medal, awarded to 3926 Pte William Rundle of the Devon Regiment. To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Defence Medal, and a Devonshire Regiment cap badge. Notes: Pte Rundle also served with the Essex Regiment, using the service number 2653238, and again with the Devonshire Regiment, using the service number 01298. The reverse of the 1915 Star is almost completely erased, and what details are left do no appear to conform to official naming styles. 'Pte W. Rundle' is still just visible, but the service number and regiment have almost completely gone. His medal index card make no mention of his entitlement to the star, hence it's likely that he erroneously awarded this medal to himself. Information supplied by the vendor suggests, possibly anecdotally, that Pte Rundle also served in the Devon Home Guard during WW2, but we have not been able to confirm this. Condition: generally good. A little wear to the high points of the design, and some age related toning to each of the medals. The badge is in polished, but good condition. The medals have been swing mounted for wear, using original ribbons. The ribbons have some wear, but are complete.

Lot 78

His Territorial Efficiency Medal has the service number 6003480, with has rank being noted as Bandsman as part of the 16th London Regiment. To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, and the Territorial Efficiency Medal. Each of the medals is swing mounted on a bar for wear. Notes: Dvr Hughes first disembarked for service in France on November 15th 1915. Condition: generally good. Lot 91

A WW1 Military Cross / Mentioned in Dispatches medal group, awarded to Lt W.G. Grant. To include: the Military Cross, British War Medal, and Victory Medal, the latter with Bronze oak leaf attached to the ribbon, indicating Mention in Dispatches. Notes: as is correct, the BWM and Victory Medal only carry the officer’s rank and name, not his regiment. It’s been suggested Lt W.G.Grant is a William George Grant, who served in the ranks as a Private in the 5th Scottish Rifles (using service number 6572). He later went on to serving in the 3/6 Scottish Rifles with the rank of Lieutenant (appointed from 24/05/16). In this instance he would also be entitled to the 1914 star with clasp (which is absent). A group certainly worthy of further research. The Military Cross is a genuine period example, and unnamed as it was originally issued. Each medal is complete with its original silk ribbon. Condition: very good. There is a little age related toning to the medals, and the M.C has traces of polish within the grooves of the design. The ribbons on the BWM and Victory medal have been sewn at the back and have safety pins attached to facilitate wearing.
