Medals mounted for display.Private Henry Smith form Somerset enlisted into the Coldstream Guards in 1876. He served in Egypt from 1st August 1882 until the 16th November 1882. He was discharged in April 1899 and was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.

WW1 8th Bn. East Lancashire Regiment North Staffordshire Regiment Military Medal Group of 4.Awarded to “16569 SGT T.H. SCOWCROFT E. LAN R”. Comprising: Military Medal, “16569 CPL T.H. SCOWCROFT 8/E. LAN R”, 1914/15 Star, “CPL E.LAN.R”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “SGT E.LAN.R”. Medals loose and polished.The announcement of the Military Medal appeared in the London Gazette on the 16th September 1918.Sergeant Thomas H. Scowcroft was a native of Bolton and enlisted into the East Lancashire Regiment on the 4th September 1914. Landing in France with the Regiment on the 31st July 1915. He was wounded during September 1916, and returned to the front again wounded during March 1917. He was later attached to the North Staffordshire Regiment and survived the war.

Detail to the medal remains good.Nelson’s prize agent, Alexander Davison, paid for these medals to be struck and issued to each of the ratings aboard HMS Victory who took part in the Battle.

He was awarded the Crimea Medal, three clasps Canada Medal, Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, Turkish Crimea Medal. The Canadian medal and clasp is confirmed, being one of only 94 awarded to the regiment.

(2 items)Corporal Percy Nelson was born in Bo'ness, Westmorland he originally volunteered at Carlisle into the Army Service Corps and laded at Gallipoli on the 10th March 1915. He later transferred to the Gordon Highlanders and was Killed in Action on the 15th October 1918, whist attached to the 2nd 14th Bn London Regiment.

Comprising: Military Cross “1943”, 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, War Medal. Medals loose unnamed as awarded. ... The group is accompanied by a number of silver and bronze prize medallions, many named with details of the competition. ... Wood cigarette box carved to the lid with the regimental device. ... Silver plated cap badge. .. etc.The recommendation for the award of the Military Cross is dated April 1943.“Major Delmege has performed gallant and meritorious service as Squadron Leader, from May 1942 and is still doing so. His Sqn has been in action almost continuously. This Officer was 2nd in command of a Sqn throughout the whole Tobruk siege and subsequent operations and his devotion to duty was an inspiration to all.” His recommendation signed by Field Marshal Montgomery.He was also awarded a MID on the 15th December 1942.Major Anthony Charles Stuart Delmege MC a pre war regular Officer in 1935 was appointed ADC to the Governor of Madras, he is also recorded as commanding No. 4 Recce Squadron.Provenance: Through Delmege family descent.

WW1 Women’s Hospital Corps Medal Suffragette Interest.A scarce silvered medallion medal, the front with enamel decoration “1914” and the motto of France. The reverse is embossed “WOMAN’S HOSPITAL CORPS” with two red cross’s. Retaining oak leaf enamel suspension ring.The Women’s Hospital Corps was raised at the outbreak of the Great War by two former militant suffragists Flora Murray and Louisa Garrett Anderson, a group of women doctors calling themselves the Women's Hospital Corps (WHC) successfully ran two military hospitals in France from September 1914 to January 1915. In 1915 the War Office invited them to run a military hospital in London where large numbers of new beds were being created. It gave them former workhouse premises in Covent Garden.

Royal Navy HMS Invincible Officer’s Egypt 1882 Medal, clasp ‘Alexandria 11th July’.Awarded to “E.J. JEFFERY ENGr HMS INVINCIBLE”. No contact marks.Chief Engineer Edwin James Jeffery was commissioned into the Royal Navy on the 21st September 1871. He confirmed on the medal roll as receiving the medal and clasp. He was appointed Chief Engineer of HMS Garnet a Doterel-class screw sloop-of-war on the 6th September 1890. The Garnet was under taking survey work in both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, when Chief Engineer Jeffery died on service 12th March 1893.

1865 Royal Humane Society Large Bronze Life Saving Medal.This medal was awarded to Colonel S.J. Thorp of the Bombay Staff Corps. The reverse of the medal engraved “MAJOR S.J. THORP 30TH NOV 1865”. Fitted with ring for ribbon.Extract from the Royal Humane Society records: The incident which gave rise to the award occurred at 7am on the 30th November 1865 at Sholapore in East India. Major Thorp was a magistrate. A mus-sulman water carrier named Oosman was apparently drowning in the reservoir Mortu Bagh. Major Thorp swam across the reservoir and dived to recover the body and brought Oosman ashore where he was revived by rubbing his body and administrating brandy water”.

Comprising: Queen’s South Africa Medal, five clasps “Cape Colony”, “Orange Free State”, “Transvaal”, “South Africa 1901”, “South Africa 1902”, “27273 PTE D.W. STEPHENS 37TH COY IMP YEO”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “271344 SJT D.W. STEPHENS R.SCOT”. Mounted for display with a quantity of detailed research.Sergeant Daniel William Stephens a native of Wick Caithness and volunteered for service with the 37th Btn (Buckinghamshire) Imperial Yeomanry and served in South Africa and after returning to the UK he went to live in South Africa. At the outbreak of the WW1 he returned and volunteered for service with the Lothian & Border and attained the rank of Acting Squadron Sergeant Major. His Troop was transferred to the Royal Scots Regiment and he landed in France on the 24t February 1918. Now serving with the 2nd Bn during the German Spring offensive on the 19th March he was reported missing and was taken prisoner. He was repatriated on the 19th November 1918.

DUNLOP”. Mounted for display.Private James Dunlop was born in 1887 at Paisley Renfrewshire, a pre war member of the Scottish Horse he enlisted in 1911. He landed with his Regiment on the 1st September 1915 at Suvla Bay Gallipoli. He was evacuated from Gallipoli due to illness on the 17th December 1915 and returned to England on the 16th January 1916. He appears to have been discharged and transferred to the Labour Corps for home duties and left the army in February 1918..

WW1 Connaught Rangers Pair of Medals to an Underaged 15 Year Recruit.Awarded to “11850 PTE T. COLLINSON CONN RANG”. Comprising: British War Medal, Victory Medal. ... Accompanied by a quantity of research.Private Thomas Collinson was a native of Wigan born in November 1899 and worked at the Garwood Colliery near Wigan in 1914. On the 28th November 1914 at the age of 15 years and a few days he enlisted into the 1st Bn Connaught Rangers. He landed in France on the 8th May 1915. He was present at the Battle of Loos and in December embarked for the Middle East. He was wounded on the 21st January 1916 whilst trying to lift the siege of Kut. He contracted Malaria in July 1916 and after a period in hospital was returned to the UK. In May 1917 he was released from hospital and later posted to the 4th Bn Royal Irish Rifles. Entitled to the 1914/15 Star.

These are complimented by a group of four post war European Commemorative medals, including the Dunkirk Medal. These with certificates. .... Recce Corps Plastic Cap Badge, with blades. ... Reconnaissance cloth shoulder title. ... Plus photographs and ephemera.Corporal Edward Nash was a pre war Territorial serving with the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He was mobilised on the 2nd September 1939 and found himself serving with the BEF in France. Evacuated he remained with the Regiment in the UK until he transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps in 1941. Amongst the papers is a 61st Recce Order of the Day 5th February 1945, plus Old Comrades Association newsletter 1980 gives biographical details stating he served with C Squadron 184th Inf Bde Anti Tank Company.

3rd Bn 95th Rifles Waterloo Medal, The smallest Battalion present at Wellington’s Victory.Awarded to “**RICHARD LIGHT 3RD BATT 95TH REGT FOOT” The medal mounted with a contemporary straight ribbon bar, decorated with representation of musket balls.Private Richard Light enlisted into the 95th Rifles in January 1814 and appears to have been garrisoned at Shorncliffe. In November 1814 he embarked to Flanders and in March 1815 at Menin he was posted to the 3rd Company. He is confirmed as serving with the 3/95th Rifles at Waterloo in Captain James Fullerton’s Company, who deployed behind the Chateau of Hougoumont and would suffer heavy casualties. He is reported as being wounded in the left during the Netherlands campaign, or most likely at Waterloo. Confirmed on the Waterloo Medal Roll sometimes spelt “Laight”. The 3rd Bn of the 95th could only muster two companies, the majority of the Battalion serving in America.

Comprising: Medal Group: Africa Star, clasp “8th Army”, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. The medals are accompanied by forwarding condolence slip with typed name “Lieut-Colonel G.A.D. Taylor M.C. Contained in original forwarding box addressed to Mrs C.V.V. Romer c/o Major N.M. Romer Horse Guards. .. The medal group is accompanied by Lt. Col Taylor’s accoutrements japanned tin with engraved name plate ... Eton School Rowing Medal ... 2x Royal Tournament medals ... regimental History “The Scots Guards 1919-1955” containing a number of photographs by Col Taylor and also contains a number of mentions (Poor Condition) ... etc. PLEASE NOTE Military Cross & 1939/45 Star not present. GC ... plus various prints of regimental uniforms. (Quantity)The citation for the award of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 18th May 1943 “On the 6th March 1943 at Tadjer Khir, Major Taylor was in command of an Anti-Tank Company of the Battalion. When the Battalion was attacked by tanks Major Taylor moved fearlessly from one Ant-Tank gun position to another, directing the fire of the guns and encouraging the crews. His complete disregard of danger was an example to all and contributed largely to the destruction of a number of German tanks”. Lieutenant Colonel Guy Aime Dubosc Taylor MC after education at Eton was commissioned into the Scots Guards in 1930. At the outbreak of WW2 he was serving as an Intelligence Officer with the Battalion and embarked for service in Norway. After this disastrous campaign he returned to the UK and was posted to the Middle East. After the North African Campaign he landed with the Battalion in Italy. On the 26th June, the Scots Guards with the support of Tanks attacked a strong German position, the objective was taken by mid morning and the Guards began consolidating their new position clearing pockets of enemy troops. The Germans kept a constant flow of mortar bombs falling on the Guards and it would be direct hit from one of these, that would Kill Lt Col Taylor and a fellow senior Officer. An number of Lt Col Taylor’s photographs appear in the Regimental History and the Imperial War Museum hold some of his papers. The medal box is addressed to his widow who remarried.

Mounted for display.Private Alfred Brown’s announcement of the award of the Military Medal appeared in the London Gazette on the 17th June 1919 and he is shown as a native of Fenchouses Co. Durham. He originally enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment and landed at Gallipoli on the 14th July 1915. His regimental numbers and regiments are confirmed.

WW1 Glamorgan (Fortress) Bn Royal Engineers Officer’s DSO Group of Five Medals.Awarded to Major George Travers Biggs DSO., TD. who was a pre war Territorial Officer with the Glamorgan (Fortress) Bn Royal Engineers. Comprising: Distinguished Service Order, (GVR), 1914/15 Star “CAPT G.T. BIGGS R.E.”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, MID Oak Leaf, “MAJOR”, Territorial Decoration (GVR Hallmarked 1921). Mounted as originally worn. ... Accompanied by a small quantity of original photographs, “The Statutes of the Distinguished Service Order” and research.Major George Travers Biggs DSO., TD was born in North Somerset in January 1882. During the Boer War he enlisted into the Devon & Somerset Royal Engineers Volunteers, he saw no overseas service. In 1908 he was commissioned and transferred to the Glamorgan (Fortress) Bn Royal Engineers. At the outbreak of the Great War he was mobilised with his unit and began his war at Pembroke Dockyard building defences. He was posted overseas with his unit landing in France on the 30th December 1914. He would remain on the Western Front throughout the war,and was given command of a Service Company within the 37th Division in 1917 and was then wounded in September 1917 returning to the front in January 1918. By the end of the war he was awarded the DSO (LG 1st January 1918) and was Mentioned in Despatches on five occasions. Biographical details are taken from an account written by Major Biggs. In later years he was a leading Mason in Somerset and served as a Platoon Commander in the Home Guard during WW2.

He is confirmed as serving with the Royal Marine Brigade embarking in September 1914. He was Killed in Action on the 2nd July 1915 and now rests in Skew Bridge Cemetery. Turkey.

Private James Foley volunteered under age in 1853, originally into the 50th Foot he transferred into the 81st his service in India is confirmed and he was also awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal. He left the army in 1875.

WW1 Royal Navy Armed Merchant Cruiser Distinguished Service Medal Group of Six Medals.Awarded to Chief Petty Officer Henry Charles Endacott who at the time of the award 1915 was serving onboard the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Ebro part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron. Comprising: Distinguished Service Medal (GV Admiral bust), “121488 H.C. Endacotte CPO HMS EBRO”, Khedive Sudan Medal (Private naming) “H.C. ENDACOTT PO CL1 HMS SCOUT”, 1914/15 Star, “CPO RN”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “CPO RN”, Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (GVR Admiral Bust) “CPO HMS PEMBROKE”. The group is mounted as originally worn, please not the surname to the DSM is spelt with a “E”, the others are without the “E”. London Gazette for the award of the DSM 31st March 1916 “in recognition of their services in the Patrol Cruisers, under the command of Rear-Admiral Sir Dudley R. S. De Chair, K.C.B., M.V.O., during the period ending the 31st December, 1915”. Chief Petty Officer Henry Charles Endacott was born in Wenhaston, Suffolk in 1867, he volunteered for the RN on the 30th November 1882. He served on a number of ships and in 1895 has posted to HMS Scout and is confirmed as serving with her when the ship was awarded 149 Khedive’s Sudan medal without clasp. He was transferred to the RNR in 1906 and was recalled for service at the outbreak of the Great War, originally at Pembroke he was posted to HMS Ebro on her commissioning in April 1915. This ship was a converted Liner of the The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company she was completed in 1914 and had only sailed one voyage before she was requisitioned, by the Royal Navy to serve as Armed Merchant Cruiser with eight 6-inch guns, depth charges and mines. The ships were integrated in the 10th Auxiliary cruiser squadron, where she served as an Atlantic convoy escort throughout the war. CPO Endacott received his DSM from the hand of Vice Admiral Reginald GO Tupper MVO on the 16th April 1916. He would remain with Ebro throughout her service, leaving her in January 1919. He received his discharge a month later. He died on the 6th March 1957 whilst living in Northampton.

He embarked to Egypt in November 1917 and an accompanying newspaper cutting tells the news when only 15 miles from port, his troopship was torpedoed and sunk by a German Submarine, the submarine then attacked other ships, the paper reports some 900 souls were lost.

WW1 Outstanding Archive of Major F.E. Neel CEF Commandant of the Canadian Grenade Section This archive of ephemera and photographs follows the career of Major Frederic Edmund Neel, an adventurer who served in the early 1890’s in South Africa, participated in the “Jameson Raid” and was taken prisoner. He served during the Boer War, The Great War commanding the Grenade Section of Canadian Military School and during WW2 worked for the Small Arms Limited. Various newspaper clippings etc. (quantity) See Lot 585 for miniature medal group.Major Frederic Edmund Neel was born in Jersey in 1871, he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery and was posted to Durban in 1891. In 1893 the war the Matabele War broke out and he fought at the Battle of Bembesi River Crossing. Later a fluent speaker of Dutch was posted an Observer to the Boer Commando under General Joubert. In 1896 Dr Jameson, Administrator of Southern Rhodesia, raised an irregular force to invade the Transvaal. Neel, went along on the adventure and like many of his comrades was captured by the Boers. Due to his attachment to the Boer Commando he was allowed to escape and he rejoined his Regiment. Before the start of the Boer War he visited and meat with Paul Kruger. At the outbreak of the Boer War he saw action at Pretoria, Kimberley, the relief of Mafeking. He was later in the war attached to “Kitchener’s Fighting Scouts. In 1905 he resigned his commission and after his marriage moved to Canada and worked for a Railway construction company who later got the contract to build in Mexico 1908, about the time General Huerta took over the Government. At the outbreak of the Great War he called upon an old friend Sir Sam Hughes, who assured him if he could get over to England he would be granted a Commission in the Canadian Army. Passage across the Atlantic was near impossible but a chance meeting with a fellow Officer from South Africa days, allowed him to sign up as a merchant crewman to look after remounts for the British Army. He served as Major OC The Grenade School Shorncliffe, his job involving trips to the front lines in France; on one such occasion he was wounded in the head by a rifle grenade. In 1917 he reverted to the rank of Lieutenant so he could join a Battalion in France and served with 124th Bn CEF. He returned to Canada in 1919 and again resigned his commission. At the outbreak of WW2 he once again offered his services to the Army, but time had caught up with him and at the age of 69 he was rejected. Not deterred he found employment with the Canadian Small Arms Company and remained in their employment until 1956. See Lot 585 for miniature medal group.

Indian Army. 7th Madras Light Cavalry 1862 Captain’s Commission.A good example to George Travis Radcliffe, signed by George (Field Marshal HRH George Duke of Cambridge, Commander in Chief, son of Queen Victoria) and de Grey Ripon (later Viceroy); complete with blue paper seals. Framed and glazed with biographical details. GCGeorge Travis Radcliffe 1825-1904. Educated at Rugby, had a distinguished military career involving various actions in the Indian Mutiny (Medal and clasp) culminating in being promoted a full General in 1888.

6th (Rifle) Bn Liverpool Regiment attributed WW1 Officer’s ‘Cuff’ rank tunic.A good and rare example, the regulation cuff rank tunic, this example attributed to Lieutenant Wilfred John Pegge MC, who was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry September 1918. The tunic is complete with regimental collar badges and rifle buttons. To each sleeve 55th Division cloth badges and rank lace and stars representing a Lieutenant. The right cuff with the addition of two blue overseas chevrons and the left a bullion wound stripe. The interior with tailor’s label and name tag Pegge. Evidence of three medal ribbons removed. The overall condition is good with a few moth nips. .... Accompanied by a black rifle pattern Sam Browne belt, holster and pouch. ... Also a pistol lanyard.Attributed to Lieutenant Wilfred John Pegge MC. A Mancunion who volunteered and served with the Inns of Court OTC in February 1916. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Territorial Force of the 6th Rifle Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment. Serving in France he was gassed in July 1917, and was promoted to Lieutenant in September 1918. That month he would earn the awarded of the Military Cross for gallantry at Festubert, when he after a personnel reconnaissance he then lead his Platoon forwarded capturing a large number of enemy troops, extracting further information he was able to advance and establish a new front line position. After the war he became a legal adviser, Conservative Councillor and Conservative mayoral candidate. He died in 1974 his papers and documents given to the Manchester Central Library.

14th King’s Hussars 1912 Cavalry Officer’s pattern sword by Wilkinson.A scarce example made by Wilkinson Sword in 1912, the year the pattern was introduced and attributed to Major Francis Peter MacIntyre OBE 14th King’s Hussars. The blade is engraved with crowned GVR crowned cypher, Regimental device and title and floral decoration. Also with initials “F.P.M.” The forte with the cutler’s details of Henry Wilkinson of Pall Mall and is numbered 45780. The solid guard is decorated with floral decoration enclosing the grip with twist wire binding. Housed in steel scabbard and complete with brown leather sword knot. The sword has be professionally restored during its working life and is in near parade condition.The Wilkinson number would indicate a manufacture date of 1912. Major Francis Peter MacIntyre OBE was commissioned into the 14th King’s Hussars on the 4th September 1912, he saw service during the Great War landing in the Middle East on the 14th November 1915, he would remain in this region after the end of the war and was awarded the General Service Medal with “N.W. Persia” clasp, also the OBE for services.

A good example of the WW1 period fighting knife of style retailed through Charles Clements of London. Five inch blade the hilt with alloy guard and chequered wood grip. Housed in polished brown leather military style scabbard. The retaining strap with ink name “F.L. Dawe”. Overall good clean condition.A search through the WW1 medal index shows medals issue to men of this name, the first serving with the RAMC, the other a pre war soldier of the Worcestershire Regiment who was awarded the 1914 Star.
