FLIGHT LIEUTENANT MATTHEW HOLLIDAY D.F.C., Flight Engineer for Bomber Command who completed fifty two combat missions, his medals and extensive archive, comprising Distinguished Flying Cross, 1939-45 Star, Bomber Command Clasp, Air Crew Europe Star with France and Germany Clasp, Africa Star with North Africa 1942-43 Clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45, Bomber Command Medal 1985, Normandy Campaign Medal 1987, Battle of Britain Medal and U.S. Flying Wings, together with his flight log books, engineer`s log book, an album of war time and later photographs, certificate of service and release, a detailed account by his Tail Gunner of a 1943 Berlin bombing raid, other certificates, a quantity of equipment and uniform including goggles, leather helmets, gloves, mask and boots. A considerable archive of personal records from Holliday and his colleagues and a quantity of general ephemera. Also included are his father`s (Pte. J.N. A group of four medals awarded to Captain Marcus Edmiston Smithett RN, The Crimea Medal, with two clasps for Sebastopol and Azov, engraved Lt Marcus E Smithett RN HMS Tribune 1854; The Baltic Medal, engraved Lieut ME Smithett HMS Tribune 1854; The Turkish Crimea Medal, engraved Lieut ME Smithett HMS Britannia 1855; The Order of the Medjidie, 5th Class, silver, gold and enamel, engraved Lieut ME Smithett HM Gunboat Clinker 1855; with miniatures groups; together with an oval porcelain portrait plaque, believed to be Captain M E Smithett RN, showing him wearing his medals, it appears also showing the three clasps on his Crimea medal, 23 x 17cm HMS Tribune was built at Sheerness dockyard and was armed with thirty 32-pounder guns on the main and quarter decks and carried a crew of 300 men. Smithett was a Lieutenant on Tribune, commanded by Swynfen Thomas Carnegie in Channel squadron, then the Baltic and then the Black Sea during the Crimean War. Whilst in the Baltic, Smithett had command of the prize crew of the Russian Finland barque 'Phoenix', captured off Gothland on 12 April 1854. Tribune took part in the bombardment of Sebastopol in 1854. HMS Britannia was a 120-gun first-rate ship-of-the-line and was launched 1823. She was decommissioned in 1843, before returning to service for the Crimean War, serving as flagship of Admiral Sir James Deans Dundas, commanding the British fleet in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from 1851-4. Returned to England at the beginning of 1855 and became a hospital ship at Portsmouth, then a cadet training ship in 1859. She was moved to Portland in 1862, then Dartmouth in 1863. Captain Marcus Edmiston Smithett is listed as being the captain of HMS Clinker from March 1855. In the summer of 1855, Clinker and other vessels from the British Squadron were involved against Russian shipping at the entrance to the Sea of Azov and destroyed communications between Temryuk and Taman. He retired as Commander in 1870. CONDITION REPORT: This portrait is believed to be Captain Marcus Smithett. The photograph is in lot 255, this is only a scan and not the original photograph.

Two World War I medals awarded to 2nd Lieutenant Graeme Cecil East Smithett, The War Medal; The Victory Medal 2nd Lieutenant Graeme Cecil East Smithett of the Royal Flying Corps 57th Squadron, formerly of the Northamptonshire Regiment, was killed in action on 12th October 1917, aged 20, and is buried in the Roeselare Cemetery, East Flanders in Belgium. R.), officially impressed, unmounted; together with a Great War silver wound badge, stamped to the reverse `B283754`; a black and white studio portrait photograph of the recipient in battle dress uniform; the recipient`s Pocket New Testament; and documentation, supplied in response to a request of 1919, outlining the circumstances in which the Military Medal was earned: `During operations near the Hohenzollern Redoubt on 13th October 1915, when his Company was advancing in support of an attack and all the Platoon Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers had become casualties, he collected the few remaining men and brought them to a position where they were needed in the firing line. He has always displayed great coolness in the face of the enemy and, until severely wounded during a bombardment at Fonquevillers, he had not missed a day in the trenches with his Battalion since they came to France`.

I. - T.F.), 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-20, and Victory Medal (all 1216 Pte. W.A. Yeandle. W. Som. Yeo.), officially impressed, together with the Defence Medal, unnamed as issued, all unmounted; also a West Somerset Yeomanry brass cap badge, mounted on a 1930s chromium plated cigarette case with the scratched name `W. Yeandle`. Note: William Arthur Yeandle was born on 25th September 1894 and lived most of his life in Porlock. He is believed to have won the Military Medal for his actions as a stretcher bearer at Gallipoli and, having survived the First World War, went on to serve in the Home Guard during the Second World War. The 1/1st West Somerset Yeomanry landed at Gallipoli on 9th October 1915, and was evacuated on 19th December. On 4th January 1917 it became 12th (West Somerset Yeomanry) Battalion Somerset Light Infantry.

He is buried with honour at the Faubourg d`Amiens Cemetery, Arras.
