Accompanied by original ephemera including: soldiers pay book, discharge papers, family papers etc.Private Robert Edward McKenzie was a pre war regular soldier enlisting in London into the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1910. He embarked with his Regiment in 1915 and landed at Gallipoli on the 17th March 1915 (MIC). Surviving the war he was discharge on the 27th March 1919 and transferred to the reserve until 1922. On leaving the Army in 1919 he enrolled in the Metropolitan Police in December 1919 serving with “B” Division and later “T” Division. He served with the “Met” throughout WW2 and retired in 1948 and is noted as died 25th April 1960.

LARCOMBE”, Bronze Memorial Plaque “ARCHIBALD HERBERT LARCOMBE”, Memorial Scroll. Accompanied by a number of photographs taken as a POW. ... Letter from a fellow Officer after Larcombe’s capture. ... Letter informing of his death. ... etc. The Memorial Plaque and Scroll are mounted into a contemporary glazed frame (glass cracked). Second Lieutenant Archibald Herbert Larcombe a native of Frome was commissioned on the 22nd November 1916. Proceeding to France he was serving with the 2nd Bn Duke of Wellingtons Regiment the West Riding Regiment. A letter accompanying the lot was received by the family on the 20th May 1917. Sent by 2nd Lieutenant William Ewant Horsley a friend, he reported that Archibald had been wounded during an attack almost reaching the Battalion objective he was known to have crawled into a shell hole with the intention of making the British lines after dark. The German counter offensive cut off his position and there was a strong chance he along with a number of his men had been captured. This turned out to be the case with a number of original postcard photographs showing Archibald with fellow prisoners. A letter dated 9th January 1919 from the Central Prisoners of War Committee confirmed he died in the “ lazarett at Ohrdruf on the 26th October 1918”.

He rejoined his Regiment on the 31st October 1916 and on the 10th May 1918 is noted as transferring to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment. He returned to the UK in February 1919.

Robert Baden Powell InterestAwarded to Captain John Gardiner who served in the ranks of the 2nd Bn in China 1900, commissioned into the South African Constabulary 1901 and recalled to the Colours in 1914 when he was granted a Commission. Comprising: Queen’s South Africa Medal, five clasps “Cape Colony”, “Orange Free State”, “Transvaal”, “South Africa 1901”, “South Africa 1902”, “2/LIEUT J. GARDINER S.A.C”. (script Officer naming), China Medal “SERGT J GARDINER 2ND WELSH REGT” (Script naming no regimental number), 1914/15 Star, “CAPT J GARDINER WELSH R”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “CAPT J GARDINER”. Medals loose. ... The medals are accompanied by a typed letter dated 1907 clearly signed by Robert Baden Powell Major General, with reference to his service with the South African Constabulary. Captain John Gardiner had an extraordinary career after education at Trinity College Dublin he enlisted into the 2nd Bn Welsh Regiment, with promotion to Corporal following year in 1892. He was posted with the regiment to India and was promoted Sergeant and qualified to take charge of Transport. In 1896 he was appointed to the Staff of the Quartermaster General India. In 1897 he returned to his Bn with a recommendation for promotion. In 1900 he was specially selected to be attached to the Indian Contingent and proceeded to Hong Kong and after the capture of Taku Forts took part in the advance to Tientsin. in 1901 at the request of Lord Curzon Gardiner was recommended for a commission in the South African Constabulary. In 1903 whilst still serving with the SAC he applied for the China Medal, giving his details as “Late Serg 2/Welsh Regt” no regimental number is given and as commissioned Officer this may explain the unusual naming. In 1906 he resigned his commission and found work in Canada returning to England in 1912. At the outbreak of the Great War he was commissioned into the 10th Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment with the rank of Captain he later transferred to his old regiment taking up a post with the 9th Bn Welsh Regiment. He landed in France with the Bn on the 18th July 1915, he took part in the Battle of Loos and in January 1916 was invalided home with illness contracted in the Trenches. Later that year he was posted as Pay Master and Company Officer at the Convalescent Camp at Warlingham. He resigned his commission for a final time on the 5th August 1919, being awarded the Silver War Badge. A digital photo of Captain Gardiner wearing his medals exists. Basic research has found that the Welsh Regiment only received two China 1900 medals, the other being award with clasp to Captain R.W.P. White who was attached to the Headquarters.

Norman Hunter (born 29 October 1943) is an English former footballer who played for Leeds United, Bristol City, Barnsley and England. He was part of the 1966 FIFA World Cup winning squad, receiving a winner's medal in 2007. He has since been included in the Football League 100 Legends. Known for his tackling, he was nicknamed Bites Yer Legs Hunter. The nickname originated from a banner held up by Leeds United fans at the 1972 FA Cup final against Arsenal; the banner simply read Norman bites yer legs Brian Clough effectively popularised the nickname by referring to it during the pre-match discussion in the TV studio. Peter Bonetti Chelsea autographed football high quality 16x12 inch photograph. Peter Phillip Bonetti (born 27 September 1941 in Putney, London) is a former football goalkeeper for Chelsea, the St. Louis Stars, Dundee United and England. Bonetti was known for his safe handling, lightning reflexes and his graceful style, for which he was given the nickname, The Cat He was one of several goalkeepers (Gordon West of Everton was another) who specialised in a one-armed throw which could achieve a similar distance to a drop kick. Bonetti played seven times for England, but mainly served the team as a back-up to Gordon Banks. Bonetti was part of the winning England squad for the 1966 FIFA World Cup, but did not play. He belatedly received a winners' medal in 2009, after the Football Association led a successful campaign for non-playing members of the squad to be recognised. Butley is a play by Simon Gray set in the office of an English lecturer at a university in London. The title character, a T.S. Eliot scholar, is an alcoholic who loses his wife and his close friend and colleague - and possibly male lover - on the same day. It was first performed at the Criterion Theatre in London on 14 July 1971, produced by Michael Codron and directed by Harold Pinter. For his lead role Alan Bates won the 1971 Evening Standard Award for Best Actor. Bates reprised his performance the following year in a Broadway production directed by James Hammerstein at the Morosco Theatre, where it ran for 14 previews and 135 performances, and for which he won this Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. Bates was to reprise the role once more for a film adaptation in 1974, again directed by Harold Pinter. (2)

Stead, [Review of Reviews], 1905, 22 pp. pamphlet, preceded by halftone photographic portrait of Churchill mounted on card with printed caption mounted below, bound with 26 other pamphlets of which 17 with similar portraits (all but one captioned), separate pagination at head and continuous pagination (1-476) at foot, lacking pp. i-iv (comprising series title-page, preface, contents page and subject index) and 7 portraits, contemporary morocco, slightly rubbed, 8vo (23.2 x 13.8 cm), together with silver prize medal, 5 cm diameter, obverse with profile portrait of Edward VII facing left, reverse lettered 'City and Guilds of London Institution, Technical Education' around decorative tablet with 'Technological Examination' at centre, edge lettered 'Samuel William Butcher, bookbinding (forwarding), 1st prize, 1907', housed in John Pinches box with silk and velvet lining Cohen B3; Woods B2. Churchill's pamphlet was the first weekly part of a projected series of twenty-six articles by notable figures, mainly Liberal and Labour politicians, published in the expectation of a heavy Conservative defeat in the 1907 general election. According to Cohen, the pamphlet issue contained additional pagination 'as part of the numbering of the entire volume Coming Men on Coming Questions', so the two issues are textually identical and the first is distinguishable only by the presence of wrappers and an advertisement leaf. Provenance: possibly bound for a City and Guilds examination in 1907 (accompanying prize medal; see further John Harvie Pinches, Medals by John Pinches, 1987, p. 27). (2)
