Virtually as struck, with dark bronze patination. The Alliance – the Holy League of the Empire – was between the Pope, represented on the medal’s reverse with his tiara, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, John III Sobieski of Poland (both crowns) and Marc Antonio Giustiniani, Doge of Venice (cap)

Extremely fine and extremely rare. The design as catalogued is, in fact, the reverse of a draughtsman of the Duke of Marlborough as Commander-in-Chief, 1702, by Martin Brunner:- the Duke on horseback galloping right, IOH D MARLEBVRG ANGL EX DVX (Himmelheber 238 – this also with reverse of the bombardment of Morea).

Good very fine and extremely rare. Napoli di Malvasia (Monemvasia) is a fortress at the Southernmost tip of the Peloponnese. Extremely fine. Following the battle of Poltava and and his defeat by the Russians, Karl escaped to Turkey, remaining there till 1714 when he fled on a horseback through Europe to Sweden.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, 1878, Brandenburg-Prussia, The Congress of Berlin, Silver Medal, by Weckwerth, seven medallic busts of the signatories around seated Peace, rev legend in nine lines within ivy border, 39.5mm (Mar 6134). Choice extremely fine and very rare. The heads depicted include Alexander Karatheodori (1833-1950, named as ‘Karath Efendi’), a Greek working for the Ottoman Empire. He was later appointed Governor-General of Crete and Minister of Foreign Affairs, resigning in 1879. And later still nominated Prince of Samos (1885-1895). Others are the Earl of Beaconsfield, Waldington (France), Andrassy (Austro-Hungary), Bismark (Germany), Corti (Italy), and Gortschakoff (Russia, Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov, 1798-1883).

Extremely fine and toned. Sultan Hamoud bin Mohammed (1853-1896-1902). The medal was awarded to the small Zanzibar contingent, commanded by Lieut. Lloyd-Matthews, R.N.
