THE GREAT WAR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER AND BAR GROUP to Sir Malby Richard Henry Crofton, Royal Field Artillery. The Bar was awarded for Gallantry. G.V.R Distinguished Service Order and second award bar 1914 Star with clasp. Correctly impressed Capt Mr H Crofton RFA British War Medal. Correctly impressed Lt Col M R H Crofton Victory Medal with M.I.D. Oak Leaf. Correctly impressed Lt Col M R H Crofton Court mounted as worn. The 1914 Star is loose on the ribbon. With a corresponding miniature set. Condition GVF. Malby Richard Henry Crofton was born on the 18th of September 1881; his birth was registered in Dromore, Sligo, Ireland. He was the first son of Sir Malby Crofton, The 3rd Baronet of Longford House and his wife, Louisa Margaret Crofton, nee Verschoyle. Crofton attended Sandhurst and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on the 18th of August 1900. He served with the Royal Artillery in 94 Battery between 1906 and 1909 as a Lieutenant. Malby was part of the BEF landing on the Western Front in October 1914. He was transferred to Mesopotamia, and for services, there was awarded his First Distinguished Service Order, announced in the gazette on 22nd December 1916. While serving with the of the 62nd West Riding Division Artillery, Crofton was awarded a Bar to his Distinguished Service Order as the Battery Commander of C/312. 'War Office, April 17th, 1917. His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of a Bar to the Distinguished Service Order to: — *Maj. Malby Richard Henry Crofton, D.S.O., R.F.A. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward under the most intense- fire to a position 150 yards from the enemy's trenches, from where he controlled the fire of his battery with great skill. ' During the course of the war, Crofton was wounded four times and mentioned in despatches twice. The following is an extract from the history of the 62nd: Early on the morning of the 5th of April 1918, the 37th division carried out an attack on Rossignol Wood and a position running thence westwards, undercover of a barrage from the guns, which kept up from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM. The enemy answered with a very heavy fire on all the batteries, especially on the headquarters of the right group at Chateau La Haie. Here the adjutant of the 235th brigade was wounded, and there were several casualties among the telephonists. About 130 prisoners were captured, including four officers. It soon appeared, however, that this local operation had merely forestalled another tremendous German attack, which reached its full force at about 10:45 AM and was kept up all through this on the following day. The Bosch bombardment was extraordinarily intense and stretched far into the back area. It included a large amount of gas shell, concentrated chiefly on the 312 Brigade, which was in action along a hedge close to and Southwest of Les Essarts. The brigade fought with magnificent courage; though inundated with gas shells the batteries never failed to fire when called upon throughout the day. Many men and officers were temporarily blinded by it. C/312 Had a particularly terrible experience. All the six officers with guns, including Major Crofton, were wounded or gassed, and the majority of the gunners, while several guns, were knocked out. In fact, by the evening, the battery had ceased to exist as a fighting unit, and it was about a fortnight before it could take an active share again in the fighting. Much sympathy was felt for the gallant Battery Commander, Major Crofton. He had already been three or four times wounded during the war, and on this day, orders arrived appointing him to the command of a brigade, a promotion which he was unable to avail himself of owing to this fresh wound. It was particularly bad luck, as he had once before missed promotion in Mesopotamia for the same reason, having been badly wounded on a day on which he was appointed to a command'. Crofton was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, survived the war, and served in India as the Commanding Officer of 4th Battery 'Quetta' Royal Artillery. He became the 4th Baronet of Longford House when his father passed away in 1926. Sir Malby Richard Henry Crofton passed away in 1962.

A MILITARY OBE GROUP TO CAPTAIN HEATON - ELLIS RA O.B.E; 1939/45 Star; France & Germany Star; Defence Medal and War Medal. Court mounted as worn with miniatures and box of issue for full-sized OBE.Condition GVFPresent with the group is his medal entitlement slip, Parachute insignia and table awards from his service with the BAOR and newspaper cuttings announcing his marriage. Peter Richard Heaton - Ellis was born on the 31st of August 1923. He was educated at Imperial Service College in Haileybury and commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1943, seeing service in North-West Europe. He was awarded the O.B.E in June 1968 for his command of the Junior Leaders Regiment RA. His citation is as follows:‘Lieutenant Colonel Heaton Ellis has now completed 2 1/2 years as commanding officer of the Junior Leaders Regiment, Royal Artillery. These have been 2 1/2 constructive years, years of forward-thinking and achievement. He is a first-class regimental soldier whose qualities of leadership and superlative personal efforts have been an outstanding example to all ranks under his command. The success achieved in this most important informative training of the boys stems from his careful planning and expert eye for detail. His splendid character and fine example, the firm hand and touch of humour, has enabled the boys to develop their personalities and to build their characters for the day when they muster to join their individual regiments as future NCO's. The demise of the Territorial Army has left a void for assistance to cadet contingents and new T and AVR Units, but Heaton Ellis readily accepted extra outside commitments to assist the Warwickshire territorial regiment, 210 Staffordshire light air defence battery and two CC Contingents at Rugby and Solihull schools to the great benefit of the units concerned. Not a week passes without breaking new ground to advertise his regiment, to promote recruiting and to further interest for the army in schools countrywide; this involves conducting visits by both masters and pupils to the junior leader's regiment RA Bramcote; when Heaton Ellis always gives an introductory talk and concerns himself personally. He is often called upon to speak by local organisations; this he does readily to the great benefit of the army and the Royal Artillery. His example and direction have been of the very highest order, and his constant vigilance to maintain standards of administration and welfare during the very difficult years of barrack reconstruction has constituted a major contribution deserving recognition’.Lieutenant Colonel Heaton - Ellis passed away in 2011.

MASRIERA AND CARRERAS.Pendant brooch in 18k yellow gold. Modernist frontispiece with marked romantic symbolism decorated with the figure of a winged nymph, wearing a long pleated tunic topped by a slightly pearled lower pearl with movement. She rests on a circular structure decorated with a calibrated ruby-cut carré, total weight ca. 2.50 cts, and holds a large diamond in her hands. The figure is framed in a translucent background worked in 'pliqué-à-jour' enamel with lines decorated with diamonds weighing ca. 1.00 cts.A similar model is catalogued in "Els Masriera. Un segle de joieria i orfebreria", p. 132, ref. 101.According to this publication, the original drawing of a very similar model appears in the 1908-1916 Workshop Book. A very similar coloured drawing appears in Álbum Masriera Hermanos Colgantes Figura, 90, num. 12.0290. This piece corresponds to a particularly symbolist model which was very successful and in great demand at the beginning of the 20th century, which is why there were many commissions with different variants, especially between 1908 and 1911.Measurements: 9 x 4 cm.The firm was founded in Barcelona in 1838 by Josep Masriera Vidal. The process of making the pieces, from the design to the final polishing, was carried out in the family workshop, which gradually expanded as demand increased and, with it, production. By the end of the 19th century, the Masriera workshop was already the most important in the city of Barcelona, winning the Gold Medal and the Unique Prize awarded by the Associació d'Artífexs en Joieria i Plateria de Barcelona (Association of Jewellers and Silversmiths of Barcelona). In 1887 they changed their name to "Masriera Hermanos", and with Josep Masriera Manovens at the helm, production was extended to jewellery, partly thanks to the recovery of various enamelling techniques, together with his son Lluís Masriera Rosés, who became the jeweller of Catalan Modernisme, achieving international renown.
