Gherman Alexeyvich Komlev (Russian, 1933 - 2000) "Mississippi River Bridge" Likely Eads Bridge (St. Louis). Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas laid on Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 2c Mississippi River Bridge stamp issued June 18, 1998. Famous author Mark Twain fondly reminisced about his experiences as a riverboat captain on the mighty Mississippi in Life on the Mississippi, "...the shining river, winding here and there and yonder, its sweep interrupted at intervals by clusters of wooded islands threaded by silver channels; and you have glimpses of distant villages, asleep upon capes; and of stealthy rafts slipping along in the shade of the forest walls; and of white steamers vanishing around remote points." Twain's beloved waterway meanders past many towns and cities, of which the largest is St. Louis. In the early 19th century, St. Louis served as the seat of government for the Territory of Louisiana and the Territory of Missouri. A crossroads of westward expansion and outfitting point for parties traveling the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails, the city became known as America's Gateway to the West. On August 20, 1867, engineer James Eads began constructing a triple-arch steel bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis. On July 4, 1874, Eads Bridge officially opened amidst great fanfare and celebration. It was the world's largest bridge -- over 1,500 feet long! Eads' achievement was recognized around the world and he became the first American engineer to be awarded the Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts in London. Even more important, his magnificent creation confirmed St. Louis' sobriquet by providing a reliable and economical means of transporting goods across the unpredictable waters of the Mississippi. Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Flag Raised at Iwo Jima" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary February 23, 2002. For six months, Americans had bombarded the Pacific island of Iwo Jima, hoping to drive the Japanese from a base that would be the perfect striking point against Tokyo. February 19, 1945, the United States armada launched its land assault on the island -- and for the next thirty-five days, the earth erupted in titanic thunder. Nature's own devilish defenses were enough to make the taking of Iwo Jima nearly impossible. The island was a volcanic ash heap ... barren, waterless and ripe with the stench of sulfur. But, in addition to its natural obstacles, the Japanese had fortified the island with underground garrisons, transforming it into a deadly anthill of tunnels. On the second day of the assault, the Marines began the grim chore of securing Mount Suribachi, at the southern tip of Iwo Jima. After battling the Japanese for every inch of ground they covered, the Americans finally reached the crater at the summit. There, soldiers Ira H. Hayes -- later to win the Congressional Medal of Honor -- Franklin R. Sousley, Michael Strank, John H. Bradley, Rene A. Gagnon and Harlon H. Block raised Old Glory ... claiming the hill for America. Many battles remained to be fought before the Japanese surrendered Iwo Jima to the Americans completely, and nearly seven thousand brave American men gave their lives to claim that eight mile stretch of barren soil. But, the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 will be forever remembered as a moment of glory for all Americans. Image Size: 15 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 16 x 18.5 in. Unframed. (B16959)
Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Pierre L'Enfant Flag" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Pierre L'Enfant Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. French-born American architect and engineer Pierre-Charles L'Enfant was born on August 2, 1754, in Paris. He studied art under his father at the Royal Academy in Paris and later received training in engineering. In 1776, he enlisted as a volunteer in the American Revolutionary Army. In 1783, Congress appointed L'Enfant major of engineers. After the war, L'Enfant designed the medal and diploma of the Society of the Cincinnati, an association of former Revolutionary officers. When he returned to Paris, he was instrumental in organizing the French branch of the society. In 1784, L'Enfant again came to America, settling in New York City, where he was commissioned to redesign the old city hall (Federal Hall) for the U.S. Congress. When Congress decided to build a federal city on the Potomac river, President Washington commissioned L'Enfant to draw up the plans. The Pierre L'Enfant flag was sketched on a proposed membership diploma for the Society of the Cincinnati. This 1783 flag is a variation of the stars-and-stripes design that was popular at the time. The Pierre L'Enfant flag features 13 alternating red and white stripes, with 13 stars arranged in a circle on a blue field in the canton. Image Size: 13.5 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 15 in. Unframed. (B16821)
