He devoted his life to public service and building the firm into a global brand and was made an Honorary Freeman of the city of Norwich in 1893.

A 1914 Star to Military Medal winner 10491 Private Patrick Gillon of the Scottish Rifles, (with copy clasp) Private Patrick Gillon entered France with the 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) on 5 November 1914. He was to be awarded the Military Medal on 9 November 1916 presumably for action during the Battle of the Somme when the battalion saw heavy fighting, particularly in October 1916. Patrick died of wounds on 30 July 1917 and is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. Although Soldiers Died in the Great War states that Patrick was born and enlisted in Barony, Glasgow the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database states that he was the ?adopted son of Emma M. Pullin, of Ardleigh Court Cottage, Ardleigh, Colchester.?

Private Isbister entered France on 11 March 1915 and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the Field during the third battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). He was discharged to the Class Z reserve.

Alfred Boucher (1850 - 1934), 'Au But', A dark patinated bronze, signed A Boucher, Siot-Paris foundry mark and 436d, stepped spreading oval variegated green marble base, 31cm high, 41cm longThe plaster version of 'Au But', or 'To the Goal', was exhibited at the Paris salon of 1886 and won a first class medal. The state awarded Boucher the Chevalier de la Légion d?Honneur and commissioned a life size bronze version of 'Au But'. The finished sculpture was exhibited at the Salon in 1887 before being placed in the Luxenberg gardens. It remained here until its destruction under the Nazi occupation.
