ANGLO-BOER WAR 1899-1902 MEDALS - A QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL TO LANCE CORPORAL FRANK OGDEN, VOLUNTEER BATTALION, 1ST KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY (7672 Pte. F. Ogden. Yorkshire. L.I.), with five clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902; together with his identity disc and eleven related original photographs, small and large format, many inscribed in ink to their reverse, including 'Men Killed in the Klip River Fight July 12-13 1902'; a newspaper clipping describing how Ogden re-joined the army in the Great War; and his Freeman of the City of Wakefield certificate, dated 1902.
SECOND WORLD WAR - THE UNIQUE DIARY OF FRENCH PRISONER OF WAR PAUL ORENGO prisoner No. 71278, beginning 25 May 1940, describing his capture (possibly at Dunkirk) and camp life, including pencil sketches, his dog tags, prison tag, aluminium mini horseshoe frame, woven hair watch chain with aluminium heart and four leaf clover, photo frames, his cap, and a bronze 'SOUVIENS-TOI!' large prisoner of war medal, all in a painted olive wood box. Provenance: Purchased from a clearance, Isle Sur La Sorgues, 1993.
GREAT WAR - THE U.S. NAVAL FLAG FROM THE U.S.S. CHRISTABEL (SP-162) the property of Captain Daniel A. J. Sullivan, awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour for his action's on 21st May 1918, when he saved the ship; together with a related photograph of the Captain. Note: USS Christabel (SP-162) was a civilian yacht purchased by the U.S. Navy during the start of World War I. She was outfitted with military equipment, including heavy 3' guns, and was then assigned to patrol duty in the North Atlantic Ocean. Ensign A. J. Sullivan, an officer aboard the Christabel, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his 'extraordinary heroism' in securing live depth charges that had come loose during combat with a German U-Boat. Provenance: [Warner Dailey] 'The flag was given to the Dailey family by Eva Sullivan, wife of Captain Daniel Sullivan, and was flown regularly on Memorial Day and the 4th of July as well as from huts and camps I built in the 1950s. It was also used to drape my father's coffin Lt. Harry Warner Dailey USNR in 1976'.

The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George Companions (CMG) breast badge, silver gilt and enamel, in original Garrard & Co. Limited London fitted case CONDITION REPORTS Ribbon has wear, creasing, stains and has been over-sewn and has some ribbon/ties sewn to it. Medal itself has some tarnish and light wear, plus some wear and knocks to loop/ring to top but generally appears to be in good order. Black case inscribed "C.M.G." has some wear and scuffs. Height of medal approx 6.5cm including the fixed loop but excluding the free-moving loop. Total weight including loops is 29.6g approx.

An important collection of medals relating to the West and Monk families including medals awarded to George Gill West alias John Moore - the Queen's South Africa medal 1899-1900 with Orange Free State and Cape Colony bars (awarded to 1005 PTE J MOORE Cape Town Highlanders) and the posthumously awarded Distinguished Conduct medal (awarded to 1005 PTE G G WEST Cape Town Highlanders), both mounted on a velvet covered panel bearing Victorian South Africa 1900 New Year Tobacco tin, together with various letters from George Gill West to his brother and sister, one dated 26 3 1900 from Cape Colony, together with a collection of mounted ephemera including War Casualties note, mounted photograph of West, other newspaper cuttings and envelope written to PTE J MOORE inscribed "Killed in action at Jacobsdal 25/10/00 and copy of The London Gazette March 18 1902 detailing the obituary of Private J Moore..... (Provenance: Private George Gill West arrived in South Africa taking the alias John Moore and joining The Cape Town Highlanders, being awarded the above medals, the DCM in place of the recommended Victoria Cross which could not be awarded as he had absconded AWOL from Dartmouth Naval College, a hand-written history by his nephew included with the lot and with a drawing of West's sister drawn before his departure to South Africa, together with a collection of medals awarded to PTE John Thomas (Jack) Monk KRRC (nephew of George Gill West) including India General Service medal North East Frontier 1891, India General Service medal Relief of Chitral 1895, Queen's South Africa medal with bars for Orange Free State, Cape Colony, Belfast, Laing's Nek, Relief of Ladysmith, Tugella Heights, King's South Africa medal with bars for 1901 and 1902 and 1914-18 war medal and victory medals, together with heightened photograph of the recipient and photocopied sheet with details of family tree and note inscribed "Medals of my father's brother Uncle Jack Monk by arrangement with Runners, the first of the besieged soldiers that he met when he aided in the relief of Ladysmith was the heroic George Gill West - my mother's brother....", together with a further collection of family medals including punctual attendance medals for 1902, 1906, 1908, 1910 and an LCC King's medal 1911-12 awarded to London's Boys and Girls of School Board for London / LCC, a Royal Military Exhibition 1890 Diploma of Merit awarded to Gunner H Monk RA for hand-stitched patchwork quilt & c, etc
