The 77th Division was famous for their involvement in the Battle of Argonne Forest in October 1918. Nine companies of the division were given the nickname, “The Lost Battalion” due to their involvement in this action. Roughly 554 men of the division were ordered to advance into the forest on the 2nd October, on the understanding they would be supported by both French and American forces on their flanks, however the men soon became isolated and the German forces surrounded them cutting them off from retreating back. The men were involved with heavy fighting against overwhelming enemy forces. The battalions were soon running out of ammunition, food and water. Due to the location it became almost impossible to get messages through to the higher command, with many runners being killed or captured. Due to command not knowing their position they were subject to a number of Artillery bombardments from their own side. Out of the 554 men who entered the forest, it is believed 197 were killed in action and 150 were missing believed taken Prisoner of War. They were finally relieved when the allies managed to advance on their position on the 8th October. Three Medal of Honours were awarded to the officers of the division.
