Diam 1½”. weight 60gm.Plate 2 Note: Jean Cooper, born 27.4.1899 in Benares to Wm E and Eliza C Cooper who were missionaries with the Baptist Missionary Society. Jean Cooper was a student at the Lady Harding Medical College Delhi from 1916-23 when she was awarded the Lady Chelmsford gold medal for being the most promising student 1921-2. The inscription is from a poem by a Turkish poet and translates “However much you acquire wisdom, if you don’t use it you are still ignorant”.

ALI MUHAMMAD: (1942- ) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion. Signed colour 12mo trading card featuring a head and shoulders image of Ali in a jubilant pose, one of a set of cards honouring the Greatest Olympians. Signed by Ali in bold black ink to a clear area of the image and dated 15th September 1988 in his hand. EX Ali, then fighting as Cassius Clay, won the Olympic Light-Heavyweight Gold Medal in Rome, 5th September 1960.

SMITH EDWARD: (1850-1912) English Naval officer, Captain of the RMS Titanic who died when the ship sank in 1912. Rare D.S., E J Smith, being the Continuous Certificate of Discharge issued to Seaman John Nelson. The partially printed document, numbered 293776, gives details of Nelson`s place and year of birth, height etc. Captain Smith has recorded, in holograph, that Nelson, a 6th Engineer, joined the S S Majestic at Liverpool on 2nd September 1903, travelled to New York and was discharged on 23rd September 1903. Signed by Smith in his capacity as Master. Two further entries appear on Nelson`s record, largely completed using rubber stamp entries and one featuring a rubber stamped signature of Smith. Bound in the original Board of Trade covers. Some overall age wear, G Smith served as the Captain of SS Majestic for nine years commencing in 1895. When the Boer War started in 1899, Smith and the Majestic transported troops to Cape Colony. King Edward VII awarded Smith the Transport Medal, with South Africa clasp, in 1903.

The document is in the form of an A.L.S. by Aretas Akers-Douglas (1851-1926, British Politician, Home Secretary) in the third person, on the printed stationery of the the Secretary of State, Home Department, recommending to the King `the retired members of your Majesty`s Civil Services named in the annual list-not being eligible for the distinction of Companions of the Imperial Service Order-for the award of the Imperial Service Medal.` With blank integral leaf and two small file holes in the upper corner, not affecting the text or signature. Together with an attractive colour printed 12mo card signed (`Albert Edward P`) by King Edward VII, as Prince of Wales, in dark blue fountain pen ink and dated 1897 in his hand. Some light age wear, G to VG, 2

The document is in the form of an A.L.S. by Herbert Gladstone (1854-1930, British Politician, Home Secretary. Son of William Gladstone) in the third person, on the printed stationery of the the Secretary of State, Home Department, recommending to the King a `list of retired members of Your Majesty`s Civil Services, to whom, not being eligible for appointments as Companions of the Imperial Service Order, he recommends the award of the Imperial Service Medal`. With blank integral leaf and two small pinholes close to, but not affecting, the King`s signature and a single file hole to the left edge. Together with a signed piece by King Edward VII, as Prince of Wales (`Albert Edward`), neatly removed from the conclusion of a letter and with four additional words in his hand. About VG, 2

GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. D.S., Appd. G. R. I., as King, one page, Whitehall, 30th September 1914. The document is in the form of a T.L.S. by Reginald McKenna (1863-1943, British Politician, Home Secretary) on the printed stationery of the Home Secretary, recommending to the King that the Imperial Service Medal be awarded to 192 retired members of the Home Civil Service. Together with a second D.S., Appd. G. R. I., as King, one page, Whitehall, 27th May 1919, in the form of a T.L.S. by Edward Shortt (1862-1935, British Politician, Home Secretary) making a similar recommendation. Some slight age wear and minor pinholes to the latter document, G to VG, 2

OWEN ROBERT: (1771-1858) British Social Reformer. A.L.S., Mr. Owen, in the third person, three pages, folio, Hotel d`Angleterre, Paris, 26th July 1837, to the President, Director and Secretary of the Society Francaise de Statistique Universalle, thanking them for the honor conferred upon him with the presentation of a medal the previous evening. Owen states that he accepted the medal `as a mark of the kindness of the Society to a stranger coming to Paris who proposes to ameliorate the conditions of the human race by a change to be affected without creating violence, injustice or evil of any kind` and continues `...for nearly fifty years he has been deeply interested in the general statistics of the world & especially in those of Great Britain, Ireland & the United States of North America, that during the same period he has been actively & alternatively engaged in the departments of producing wealth & in its distribution, in education, or forming the character from infancy to maturity, & in the immediate government of considerable masses of population` further adding that his experience and learning has allowed him to form `a machine with new powers physical & mental which is capable of being made to perform, with the least manual labour & most pleasure, all the business of human life much better than heretofore it has ever been executed & at the same time, most beneficially for every individual in every country` and offering to present his ideas in more detail to the Society. Accompanied by the original envelope, hand addressed and signed (`Robert Owen`) by the reformer. Housed in an attractive presentation folder. Together with a small collection of A.Ls.S. by various writers including John Ruskin (name of recipient neatly cut away in two small boxes), Anthony Trollope (upper half of A.L.S., with signature), Sabine Baring Gould, Samuel Rogers (3) etc. Neatly laid down (1), G to VG, 9

VICTORIA CROSS: John Manners Smith (1864-1920) Lieutenant Colonel in the British Indian Army, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Nilt Fort, India, on 20th December 1891. A.L.S., J Manners Smith, three pages, 8vo, Newbury, 7th December 1912, to Lauder. Smith states that he is pleased to hear that his correspondent has been awarded the Royal Humane Society`s medal `for your brave action in saving my life...a cutting about the presentation was sent to us today...I feel it is quite impossible to express how much I owe to you & shall never be able to discharge the debt of gratitude. The more I think of it the more I realise the risk you took for me.`; Thomas Orde Lawder Wilkinson (1894-1916) Canadian Soldier, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at La Boiselle, France, on 5th July 1916. Rare D.S., T. O. L. Wilkinson, in pencil, one page, small 8vo, n.p., 4th October n.y. (1915). The printed postcard takes the form of a letter giving various message options, the irrelevant ones struck through in pencil by Wilkinson. Signed and dated at the conclusion. Neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album; Frederick Roberts (1832-1914) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at the Indian Mutiny on 2nd January 1858. L.S., Fred Roberts, two pages, 8vo, Head Quarters Camp, 4th January 1886, to `My dear Nawab`, stating that he was disappointed to learn that his correspondent has to leave Delhi `just before our manoeuvres commence` and inviting him to the camp tomorrow morning. With blank integral leaf, laid down to a page removed from an autograph album. G, 3

Welsh Guards, B.E.F., France 16.10.17. Dear Madam, I regret very much to have to inform you that your husband 1284 Sgt. Pring was killed in action on the 12th. He will be a great loss to the company with whom he had been for such a long time. He was an excellent N.C.O. always reliable, cheerful and willing and at the time of his death was acting Coy Sergt Major. Please accept my sincerest sympathy & condolences. Y. truly Lisburne Capt O.C. W 2 cy``. Plus an enamelled badge ``Comrades of the Great War Associate Member - Lest we forget``, No. 4114. Edward Pring`s widow who was born on the 8th February 1891 passed away on the 5th April 1986 after almost 70 years a ``widow of Edward Pring Jewellers Appraiser`` (And Soldier).

A military general service medal with seven clasps, `Talavera`, `Busaco`, `Ciudad Rodrigo`, `Salamanca, `Vittoria`, `Pyrenees`, and `Toulouse`, awarded to John Williams 53rd foot, together with a photograph of John Williams, and an autobiographical sketch of his life which appeared in the gazette of August 1st 1870 and pension document Note: John Williams was born in Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury, 3rd November 1790 and enlisted into the 53rd Regiment of foot on the 16th May 1807 at Shrewsbury. He sailed from Cork to Lisbon in 1809 and fought in the above seven battles. He was hit by a musket bullet on the side of the head at The Battle of Saramanca, and lost his left leg and thigh at Toulouse. He was discharged on the 2nd February 1815, and lived at Condover near Shrewsbury for the rest of his life. He became a carpenter and joiner and made his own wooden leg, and he was parish clerk for fifty one years. He died aged 83 on the 17th May 1873.
