Lot 1400

Cricket Interest Allen Hill England And Yorkshire Born At Kirkheaton Yorkshire in 1843, died, Leyland Lancashire in 1910. Allen hill played in the first ever test cricket match between England and Australia at Melbourne cricket ground on the 15 th March 1877. Hill opened the bowling for England and in the fourth over he bowled the Australian no.2 batsman, Nat Thompson, to take the honour of being the first test bowler to take a wicket and the first test bowler to bowl a batsman. Hill achieved another first when Australia were 40 for 1; he caught out Australian no.3 Tom Horan off a delivery from Alfred Shaw of England and became the first international fielder to take a catch in a test match. Hill also retains the honour of being the first player to open bowling and batting in the first test match of 1877. Hill also played in the Second Test of 1876 -1877 against Australia. Hill was a bowler with a roundarm action, referred to as one of the best of it's kind. Hill attained many honours during his career and went on to become a respected umpire. Following an illustrious career, Hill died in 1910. We have the pleasure in offering the following items for auction. 1. A 9ct Gold Medal - Presented by George Brown C.E. architect of the M.CC Grand Stand Melbourne. Dated 1877, following the first test match. 2. A Silver Cup/Goblet presented to Allen Hill by an admirer at the Yorkshire /Surrey match at the oval, August 21st 1871. During this game, Hill took 12 wickets for 56 runs. 3. Antique Presentation Cricket Ball With Silver Plaque Presented to Hill to commemorate an 1877 match in Canterbury, New Zealand. During this match, Hill took 12 wickets for 17 runs of 103 bowls with 15 maiden overs out of 17. 4. A Small Silver Medal/Plaque In The Form Of A Shield Presented to Hill from 'B Simpson' for attaining the highest score in an all England team against New Zealand. Played at Christchurch, dated 1877. 5. A Silver Vesta Case Owned By Allen Hill Himself. Complete with monogramme, hallmarked Sheffield 1900, maker Walker And Hall. 6. Gold Coloured Double Sided Locket enclosing a photo of Allen Hill, the obverse, a photo of Peggy McHugh, cousin of James Allen Hill (Artist), along with a pair of cufflink's. 7. Original Oil On Board By John Gibb Depicting the moment, when Allen Hill and the England Test Match Team attempted to traverse an engorged river during their travels from Australia to New Zealand in 1877. Painted en Plein air by the artist, depicts a semi submerged carriage, label to verso 'Mr John Gibb Artist, Mereland Villa Barbados St, Christchurch New Zealand.
