The citation for the Military Cross reads: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He kept the guns of the forward section in action under intense fire for seven hours, firing 800 rounds from two guns. He only retired when the enemy opened machine gun fire at 150 yards, first putting his guns out of action, and getting his men away with a minimum of loss."

A selection of 9ct gold items including rings, Masonic items and a gold medal awarded to A Sterry for services in the Great War 1914-18, the back engraved "Lydney's Welcome Home". Every soldier who survived the war was presented with a pocket watch, chain and medal by the Lydney Welcome Home Committee, in total about 500 were presented. Together with a yellow metal propelling tool, approx 31.8 g of gold.
