A Military Presentation 9ct gold vesta and cigarette case - 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment Sampson Mordan & Co Ltd, Chester 1909, the cigarette case of rounded square outline, the vesta case of circular outline, each engraved with monogram and banner of the regiment 1907-1910 to one side and crest and motto engraved above italic initials ELPE(Length: 8cm, weight: 89g)Footnote: Eric Lea Priestly Edwards (1877-1914) Killed in action at the beginning of the First World War at the First Battle Aisne in 1914, Edwards was a professional military serviceman and dedicated his life to the army. His military service defined his character, and it is fitting that he was presented with such a rewarding gift. Educated at Harrow and The Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Edwards then joined the East Yorkshire Regiment and remained there throughout his career. The Yorkshire Regiment also known as Alexandra Princess of Wales’s own regiment, was formed in 1875. During the Army reforms of 1881, the regiment’s title changed to The Princess of Wales's Own and following Alexandra’s coronation as Queen Consort to King Edward VII in 1902, its title changed again, becoming Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment). A celebrated Regiment, in total the East Yorkshire Regiment was awarded 1,125 British medals and 94 foreign awards and received 397 mentions in dispatches during the First World War; the presentation of this cigarette case is a reference to his contribution to his regiments successes; and his medal card, held within the National Archive at Kew, reveals his short but notable career Early on in his career Edwards served as Captain and it would appear that he was an Officer with various battalions, in August 21st 1908 he is mentioned in the London Gazette ‘5th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment; Captain Eric Lea Priestley Edwards, The East Yorkshire Regiment, from the Adjutancy of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regiment, to be Adjutant for the residue unexpired of his tenure. Dated 1st April 1908.’ Prior to this he served on the Indian Frontier between 1897 and 1898 during the Tirah expedition, attempting to control the Khyber Pass and manage the rebelling tribes of the region with the First Battalion. At the beginning of the First World War Edwards joined the British Expeditionary Force. At the time, it was assumed that any future conflict with Germany would be at sea and that Britain’s part in defeating Germany would be through a naval blockade. Before the First World War Britain’s regular Army was just under 250,000 men and most of them were scattered around the Empire. Consequently, the BEF combined battalions to form what was thought was a contingency only needed for a six-month war. The Battle of Aisne lasted only two nights, the 13th to the 15th September, and Edwards lost his life only five weeks into the war. The vesta and cigarette case are engraved 1907-1910, presumably for the contribution made to the battalion. Remembered by this presentation gift, he is also remembered on the Le Fert-sou-Jouarre Memorial outside of Paris.

PABLO SERRANO AGUILAR, (Teruel, 1908 - Madrid, 1985)."Bull (oval)", ca. 1949.Carved and polished black stone. Unique piece.Signed "Serrano" in stone. With inventory number from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, USA.Provenance:- Joseph Cantor Collection, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.- Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana, USA (Inv. 1987.97).- Private collection, New York.Literature: "Pablo Serrano. Catalogue Raisonné of Sculptures". Madrid, Fundación Azcona, Gobierno de Aragón and IAACC Pablo Serrano, 2018, p.172, cat. No. 167-UE-1949-13 (black and white illustration).Size: 35.5 x 30.5 x 25.4 cm.Pablo Serrano began his series "Toros" in 1949, when he was already a well-known figurative and religious sculptor based in Montevideo. At that time he had already been awarded the Gold Medal at the Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Uruguay and enjoyed an established artistic reputation. His restless personality and his eagerness to explore new paths led him to focus his production on the simplification of forms, leaving aside the realism that had prevailed in his works until then, and moving towards geometrisation and abstraction. His "Bulls" series seeks the essence of the animal by making use of minimal gestures, based on small-format sculptures that are rooted in the European imaginary of the 1930s, with representatives such as Brancusi and Hans Arp. This bullfighting series, whose sketches were made in Montevideo, although many were melted down after his arrival in Spain in 1955 and later, when he took up the theme again between 1970 and 1973, had already been worked on by other artists such as Picasso, who devoted a large part of his production to extolling the figure of the bull.Trained in sculpture, Pablo Serrano received his first lessons at the Salesian School in Sarriá. After finishing his studies he moved to Argentina, where he was taught the art of carving. After this period abroad, he decided to return to Spain in 1955 with a renewed technique in which diversity and unity prevailed. Serrano evolved through experimentation in each of his stages, as he was guided by his own will and not by the requirements of society. In 1956 he settled in Madrid, where he became a founding member of the El Paso group of Madrid's most innovative artists. Pablo Serrano works through poetry, delving into juxtaposed terms such as beginning and end, life and death, despair and hope. He also works on the figure of the human being, trying to explain and understand the human situation through his works. During his career, Serrano won the Sculpture Prize at the Hispano-American Biennial in Barcelona. In 1962 he exhibited twenty-three sculptures at the Venice Biennale to great critical acclaim. In 2003 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him. Works by Pablo Serrano can be found in the museum that bears his name in Zaragoza, the Museo Reina Sofía, the Museo Nacional in Montevideo, the Museo San José in Uruguay, the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno in Paris, the MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the National Galleries in Rome and Budapest, the Rio Piedras University in Puerto Rico, the Brow University in Providence, the Clear Lake Clear Lake University in Clear Lake, and the University of Puerto Rico, Brow University in Providence, Clear Lake City University in Houston and the University of Zaragoza, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Connecticut, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Venice, the Vatican Museum and the Middelheim in Antwerp, among many others.

Lot 128

PABLO PALAZUELO DE LA PEÑA (Madrid, 1916 - Galapagar, Madrid, 2007).Untitled, 1951.Drawing on paper.Enclosed certificate of authenticity.Signed, dated and dedicated in the lower right area.Measurements: 61 x 60 cm: 80 x 80 cm (frame).A few light strokes make up this work which is defined by its lyricism and poetics, through an oscillation between the abstract and the figurative, Palazuelo awakens the imagination of the spectator, inviting him to enter between the lines which make up the drawing, and to finalise with his personal experience the aesthetic concept presented in the work as if it were a visual poem. A remarkable fact is that the work is dedicated to Rosa Casanovas, daughter of the sculptor of sculptors Pere Casanovas, who was in charge of giving life to the projection of artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Pablo Palazuelo, Oteiza, Jaume Plensa and Javier Mariscal.A painter, engraver and sculptor, Pablo Palazuelo de la Peña is currently considered one of the key figures of Spanish art in the second half of the 20th century. He studied architecture in Madrid and Oxford, but in 1939 he decided to devote himself fully to painting. During these years he took part in various national competitions, such as the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1945, for example. Two years later he began to make his first abstract drawings, and made his debut in a group exhibition for young artists held at the Buchholz gallery in Madrid. In 1948 he moved to France to study, with a scholarship from the French Institute. There he exhibited that same year at the Denise Rene gallery in Paris, which was the definitive impetus for the dissemination of his work. Throughout his career, Palazuelo has won awards such as the Kandinsky and Carnegie prizes, the Fine Arts Medal, the National Plastic Arts Prize and the Velázquez Prize, among others. In 1995 the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, and between 2006 and 2007 the MACBA in Barcelona and the Guggenheim in Bilbao did the same. His style is characterised by a purely linear abstraction, which began with the post-impressionist experiences of the turn of the century and reached its ultimate consequences in the 1960s with Minimalism. Palazuelo conceives art as "a way of finding a way out of human problems", and fills his works with references to the history of painting. His language is intimately linked to a rational process based on the discovery, not invention, of new forms. Palazuelo is currently represented in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the Guggenheim in New York and Bilbao, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Maeght Foundation in France, the Musées d'Art Moderne de la Villa in Paris and Rio de Janeiro, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and the Kunsthaus in Zurich, among many others, and various private collections around the world.

VICENTE ARNÁS LOZANO (Madrid, 1949)."Toreros de farándula", 2012.Oil on canvas.Attached certificate of authenticity issued by the artist.Signed in the lower left corner. Signed, dated and titled on the back.Measurements: 73 x 92 cm.Vicente Arnás is a painter from Madrid who began his artistic career linked to the world of advertising. After several years of experience, in 1976, he had his first individual exhibition, which was held in the Macarrón room in Madrid. After the success of his first exhibition, he began an exhibition career that has taken him to places such as New York and different European countries. He has participated in prestigious fairs such as Arco, or Europ Art, held in Geneva. In addition, he has been awarded on numerous occasions, being medal of honour in the BMW painting prize and receiving the prize of the Real maestranza of Seville, among others. This has earned him the recognition of both the public and the critics. His painting is characterised by the recreation of dreamlike, placid worlds, where time seems to stand still. He creates worlds of realistic aesthetics, close to currents such as magical realism, or to influences such as those of the painter Arcimboldo or Bosch. For a period he was part of the group "Nueve expresiones" with whom he exhibited in several collective exhibitions.

ANTONI TÀPIES PUIG (Barcelona, 1923 - 2012)."Als Mestres de Catanlunya".Lithography. Copy H.C.Signed and justified in pencil.Size: 100 x 70 cm.This work belongs to the album "Als mestres de Catalunya", made up of eight lithographs and a silkscreen, including the one on the cover, published by Sala Gaspar in Barcelona and printed by Damià Caus (Barcelona, lithographs) and Alexandre Tornabell (Girona, silkscreen).Co-founder of "Dau al Set" in 1948, Tàpies begins to exhibit at the Salones de Octubre in Barcelona, as well as at the Salón de los Once held in Madrid in 1949. After his first solo exhibition at the Galerías Layetanas, he travels to Paris in 1950, with a grant from the Institut Français. In 1953 he had a solo exhibition at Martha Jackson's gallery in New York. From then on, he exhibited his work, both in group and solo shows, all over the world, in leading galleries and museums such as the Guggenheim in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Since the 1970s, anthologies have been devoted to him in Tokyo, New York, Rome, Amsterdam, Madrid, Venice, Milan, Vienna and Brussels. Self-taught, Tàpies created his own style within the avant-garde art of the 20th century, combining tradition and innovation in an abstract style full of symbolism, giving great importance to the material substratum of the work. It is worth noting the marked spiritual sense given by the artist to his work, where the material support transcends its state to signify a profound analysis of the human condition. Tàpies' work has been highly valued internationally, being exhibited in the most prestigious museums in the world. Throughout his career he has received numerous prizes and distinctions, including the Praemium Imperiale of Japan, the National Prize for Culture, the Grand Prix for Painting in France, the Wolf Foundation for the Arts (1981), the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1983), the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts (1990), the Picasso Medal of Unesco (1993) and the Velázquez Prize for the Plastic Arts (2003). Antoni Tàpies is represented in major museums all over the world, such as the foundation that bears his name in Barcelona, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Guggenheim in Berlin, Bilbao and New York, the Fukoka Art Museum in Japan, the MoMA in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.

Lot 56

LUIS FEITO (Madrid, 1929-2021).Untitled.Gouache on paper.Work in relation to the first series of the 1970s.Provenance: Jean Robert Arnaud Gallery (Editor of the series); John Flanklin Joenig Collection; Jean Pierre & Françoise Arnaud Collection.Measurements: 65 x 50 cm.Born and trained in Madrid, he was one of the founding members of the El Paso group. In 1954 he held his first individual exhibition, with non-figurative works, at the Buchholz gallery in Madrid. From then on Feito exhibited regularly in the most important cities in the world, such as Paris, Milan, New York, Helsinki, Tokyo and Rome. Appointed professor at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in 1954, two years later he left teaching and went to Paris on a scholarship to study the avant-garde movements in force. During this period he was influenced by automatism and matter painting. In 1962 he became a founding member of the El Paso group, with which he had lost contact during his years in Paris. His first works were figurative painting, followed by a phase in which he experimented with cubism and finally moved fully into abstraction. At first he only used black, ochre and white colours, but when he discovered the potential of light he began to use more vivid colours and smooth planes. He evolved until he used red as a counterpoint in his compositions (from 1962) and, in general, more intense colours. In his abstract phase, which includes the 1970s, Feito showed a clear tendency towards simplification, with the circle predominating in his compositions as a geometric form. Possibly, the influence of Japanese art can be seen in his preference for large bands of black. Most of his works are untitled and can therefore be recognised by a number assigned to them. Among his awards is his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 1985. In 1998 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Fine Arts in Madrid, and was made a Full Member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 2000 he was awarded the Prize of the Spanish Association of Art Critics at the Estampa Salon, in 2002 the AECA Grand Prize for the best international artist at ARCO, in 2003 the prize for the most important artist at the Osaka Art Fair (Japan), in 2004 the Prize for the Culture of Plastic Arts of the Community of Madrid, in 2005 the Francisco Tomás Prieto Prize of the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, and in 2008 the Jorge Alió Foundation Prize and the Grand Prize for Spanish Contemporary Art CESMAI. Luis Feito is represented in the most important museums all over the world, including the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Guggenheim, the MoMA and the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, the Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Montreal, the Lissone in Italy, etc.
