Lot 370

A Great War pair comprising War Medal and Victory Medal named to Lieut C.G.H. Savory. Lieutenant Savory is recorded with a seniority date of the 2nd of February 1916 and as serving with the 3rd Battalion (Reserve) and D company, 4th Division of the 2nd Battalion. He was reported suffering from shell shock on the 15th October 1916 at which time he was 29 years old and had served for 1 year 10 months, five months with the field force. A second report on the 22nd October records wounds and an entitlement to a wound stripe. With accompanying miniatures, both mounted as worn. A large collection of military literature from the period for the First World War and later, many named by Svory, rank and cuff parts of uniform including a wound stripe, and an award to Savory from the Government of Ceylon to those who gave service during the First World War. *CR: Normal very light surface marks. A Great War pair comprising War Medal and Victory Medal named to L8373 S.V. Mabb OS2 R.N. Stanley Vernon Mabb was born 7th November 1896 at Weymouth and lived at St Thomas Street, Weymouth. He served as an Officers Steward and Cooks Servant. With his S-459 Certificate of Service noting that he volunteered on the 23rd February 1916, his protection and Identity Certificate stamped 'Supplementary Prize Share Paid' and other documents. *CR: All in good order. *BP 22.5% (18.75% plus VAT) plus a lot fee of £8 inc. A group of five miniatures comprising Military cross, 1914-15 Trio and Second World War Defence Medal, unnamed as issued, with the Defence Medal in distribution box addressed to L.P. Causton M.C. Alton. Captain Custon's Military Cross was gazetted on the 14th November 1916 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He commanded the battalion front line during the attack, and pushed on under very heavy machine gun fire to support the leading battalion, which had suffered severely. When he came up, he found parts of three battalions, which he immediately reorganised'. A photograph album containing a small number of photographs of the recipient in uniform and images of Princess Margaret. A later kit bag named to R. A group of five comprising George VI Distinguished Conduct Medal named to 406289 Sgt H. Moore 10 RH, unofficial naming, the medal clearly marked 'Copy'.to the reverse, mounted with a 19139-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal and War Medal with Mentioned in Dispatches Oak leaf, all unnamed as issued. The genuine set to Sergeant Moore was sold at auction in London in 2012 (£5,200 hammer DNW), with an Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp and without the oak leaf to the War Medal. Sergeant Moore was awarded the DCM for outstanding bravery and action taking out a Panzer Mk IV Special tank at 15 yards securing the bridgehead over the river Corsina in November 1944. *CR: Mounted Court style for display. With a letter dated June 1943 'on the advice of the First Lord, the King has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of the Celebration of His Majesty's Birthday, to award you the British Empire Medal (Military Division) for zeal and wholehearted devotion to duty'. Produced to commemorate the first public flight of the military airship 'Nulli Secundus' on the 5th October 1907. Malcolm Appleby: The Trafalgar Medal, irregular shape being the outline of Nelson in a bicorn hat, the obverse engraved with HMS Victory in full sale, the reverse with the Battle of Trafalgar 'Together in Mortal Combat', hallmarked, signed Malcolm Appleby and marked SCM to the lower edge for Sim Comfort Associates who commissioned the medal for the Trafalgar bicentennial.
