Queen's South Africa Medal with the clasps 'Transvaal' 'Wittebergen', 'Driefontein', 'Paardeberg' and 'Cape Colony', British War Medal 1914-1920, and Allied Victory Medal 1914-1918. A resident of Peterborough. Enlisted on 24th October 1888 into the Royal Regiment of Artillery. After initial training at the Depot RA he was posted on 8th September 1890 to India and joined 34th Battery R.A. Transferred to the Army Reserve on 24 th October 1895. Recalled to the Colours on 4th December 1899 and served in the Boer War with the 82nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery, as a Gunner (69199). Returned to England on 27th June 1901 and medically discharged on 23rd October 1901. Re-enlisted on 9th September 1914 and joined Railway Troops, Royal Engineers. Compulsory transferred on 22nd February 1918 to the Labour Corps and saw further service in Salonika. Discharged 23rd January 1919.

Held as a prisoner of War in Bulgaria from 15th April 1918 until 31st October 1918. Repatriated to England on 17th November 1918. Demobilised on 18th February 1919.

Finally employed as a Sergeant Instructor for the Far East Flying Boat Wing at R.A.F. Seletar.

Appointed to Lieutenant without purchase on 12th January 1855. Purchased his Captaincy, on 29th April 1859 with 21st Foot. Died at Portsmouth on 1st September 1864. A memorial tablet to Hollway can be found in St. Peter's Church, Gunby, East Lindsey, Lincolnshire.

Joined 1st Battalion, Manchester Regiment in France on 4th May 1915. He returned to the Depot on 8th July 1915 and was attached for duty in a Plating Factory in Manchester. Discharged surplus to military requirements on 1st January 1919.

Enlisted on 22nd March 1912 into 5th Battalion, Essex Regiment, Territorial Force. Embodied on 5th August 1914. Landed in Gallipoli on 9 th August 1915. Returned to the United Kingdom on 9th January 1916 with enteric fever. Posted on 14th April 1916 to 3rd/5th Battalion, Essex Regiment and soon after to 2nd Battalion, and then to 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Posted on 5th July 1918 to 11th Battalion, Essex Regiment. On 24 th July 1918 diagnosed at a Casualty Clearing Station with neurasthenia. He was medically evacuated with a gunshot wound to his left arm and shrapnel in his hand on 10th August 1918. Discharged on 4th October 1918.

Re-enlisted into 6th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry on 9th December 1915. Landed in France on 9th December 1916. Admitted to hospital with the effects of gas on 6th June 1917. After his recovery, he transferred to 826th Area Employment Company, which in time transferred to the Labour Corps, and he was renumbered 579590. Demobilised on 7th February 1919.

Sold with ribbon bars, medal boxes, miniatures, a photograph, a Legion of Merit Certificate and associated letter, signed by 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman, plus an earlier WW1 miniature group and regimental calling cards. Born at Oatlands, near Sydney, Australia and attended Winchester College and was a member of their OTC. Commissioned a probationary 2nd Lieutenant with 3rd Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry on 15th August 1914 and confirmed in the Rank on 15th February 1915. Promoted Lieutenant on 19th September 1916. Served in France and Flanders from 8th January 1915 until 31st March 1915. Wounded by a gunshot to the side of the head on 13th March 1915 and medically evacuated to Millbank Hospital. Served in Cameroon and Nigeria from 30th June 1915 when he arrived in Lagos until 18th February 1916. Appointed Temporary Captain with 8th Battalion, Shropshire Light Infantry from 26th April 1917 until 30th November 1918. Served in the Balkans and the Isles of the Aegean from 29th September 1916 until 11th November 1918. His first Mention in Despatches was announced in the London Gazette on 11th June 1918. Award of the Military Cross publicly announced in the London Gazette dated 1st January 1919 'for distinguished services in connection with military operations in France and Flanders'. Employed as an Education Officer from November 1918 to September 1920. Listed on the Medal Roll of the 3rd Battalion, Nigeria Regiment on 14th January 1922 at Kaduna. Promoted Captain on 22nd September 1924, then made GSO3 in India from January 1930 until December 1931. GSO1 for weapons training in Scottish Command from May 1934 to May 1938. Promoted Major on 26th January 1937. Temporarily posted to the 7th Division on their staff in Palestine from September 1928 until August 1940. His second Mention in Despatches was publicly announced on 22nd December 1939. Appointed Acting Lieutenant Colonel on 1st September 1939 and temporary Lieutenant Colonel on 1st December 1939, posted to the staff of the 11th African Division in Somaliland from September 1940 until May 1942. During this time he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and a Mention in Despatches for his work on the advance to Addis Ababa. Appointed Acting Brigadier on 7th May 1942 and given command of an East African Brigade until May 1943. Confirmed a War Substantive Lt Col and Temporary Brigadier on 7th November 1942. Appointed Commanding Officer of 25th East African Brigade on 6th May 1943 until 13th May 1944, taking them to East Africa and Ceylon. Appointed ACoS G03 (British) HQ Berlin District in 1945 and awarded a US Legion of Merit on 14th November 1947. Went on to retired pay on 13th September 1946 and was made Honorary Brigadier. Ceased to belong to the Reserve of Officers on 12th May 1949.

Medals (2) of 289222 Signals Petty Officer James McArdle R.N. British War Medal 1914-1920, and Allied Victory Medal 1914-1918. Native of Edinburgh. Enlisted as a Stoker 2nd Class on 15th July 1898, aged 18. Served aboard seven ships in his first 12 years, visiting the cells five times before finally being sentenced to 60 days of hard labour in 1903. On completion of that ship's commission, he was posted ashore. Promoted to Stoker 1st Class he returned to sea aboard HMS Royal Oak, then HMS Victorious and finally with the destroyer depot ship HMS Tenedos, rising to the rank of Petty Officer Stoker. Transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve in July 1910, he rejoined in 1913. He was wounded aboard the destroyer HMS Laertes at the Battle of Heligoland Bight on 28 August 1914, when she was seriously damaged, suffering four shell strikes. On his recovery, he was posted to the destroyer HMS Mastiff and joined her on 22nd August 1915. HMS Mastiff was posted to Dunkirk before the attempted Ostend and Zeebrugge raid of 23 April 1918, with the task of patrolling off Ostend during the raid itself to protect the bombardment force from enemy interference.
