BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, Charles II, Sir Samuel Morland, Silver Medal, 1681, by John Roettier, laureate bust of Charles II with flowing hair, rev legend IN ADVERSIS SVMMO VITAE PERICVLO IN PROPERIS FELICI INGENIO FREQVENS ADFVIT, lettered edge, SAMVEL MORLANDVS EQ QVR ET BAR, 33mm (MI I 582/257). Darkly toned, very fine with MI number 257 stuck to the reverse. Sir Samuel Morland (1625-1695), diplomatist, mathematician and inventor. The medals are said to have been struck by Morland after his appointment as ‘Master of Mechanics’, and were dedicated to the King. In old age he went blind and invented a machine for writing, and a mechanical calendar of sorts, as well as a pumping system to water his garden. bought Spink, April 1908, and believed ex Helen Farquhar Collection (whose habit it was to stick numbers on gummed paper onto her medals).

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, James II, The Landing of William of Orange at Torbay, Silver Medal, 1688, by R Arondeaux, William as Roman Emperor tramples on serpent of discord and joins hands with Britannia, rev boats landing at a fortified harbour, CONTRA INFANTEM PERDITIONIS, 49mm (MI I 639/65; Woolf 3:8). Extremely fine, toned and rare. One reading of this protestant medal is that William of Orange comes to England to restore liberties lost to James, Prince of Wales. Another interpretation is that the medal denounces the Pope, who was at the time widely believed to be the Antichrist, called the Son of Perdition by St Paul.

He was an able administrator and military strategist, and was invested in April 1702 as “Generalissimo of all Forces by Land and Sea” and then in May as “Lord High Admiral of England and Ireland”.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, George I, The Escape of Princess Clementina from Innsbrück, Silver Medal, 1719, by Otto Hamerani, bust of the Princess left, rev the Princess makes good her escape in a chariot, Italian landscape behind, 48mm (MI 444/49; Woolf 36:1). Light wear to high points, otherwise nearly extremely fine. Princess Clementina Sobieski (1703-1735) was betrothed to Prince James Stuart. George I was averse to the marriage and to please him the Princess was arrested and imprisoned in Innsbrück Castle. Eventually she escaped to Bologna and was married to James, at that time in Spain, by proxy.

The medals extremely fine or virtually so, a few with minor spotting. (34) Sold together with a pocket-size book:- Knott T, A Concise Epitome of the History of England on 36 Plates, being a representation of Dassier’s Medals of the Sovereigns of England, with the addition of their present Majesties, nd, c.1800, 6cm x 12cm, 36 copper engraved plates with accompanying text, original morocco leather boards, gilt, spine rebound to match, raised bands, gilt rules, title in gilt. Extremities worn, contents a little brown throughout, but texts and plates complete, an attractive and charming text, “designed for the amusement and information of youth.”

First extremely fine, the other two very fine. (3)
